Labor Economy—No. 2.
The difficulties and embarrass
ments of the Southern planter,
growing out of the scarcity and in
feriorrty of farm labor, may be obvia
ted by importing labor, or by era
ploying substitutes for labor. It i
the latter branch of the subject to
which we now very briefly invite
Attention.
By substitutes for labor, wo mean
every device by which the produc
tiveness of a given quantity of hu
man labor is, or may be increased.
This may be effected in various
ways; but, in a brief discussion like
the present, mention can be made
of only two or three of the most
prominent—macliinery, mechani
cal contrivances, first.
Machines have wrought wonders
in every department of enlightened
human industry. Machinery per
forms the drudgery of the world.—
It is found in every workshop, and
shares in every operation. It
forges* CW huge anchor, and sash
ions the mammoth engine of the
colossal stoamer, and fabricates the
delicate hair-spring of a lady’s chro
nometer. It is more accurate than
the human hand, more unerring
than the human eye, more mighty
than the combined muscles of “Uo
naparte’s legions,” and tireless as
the planet in its revolution. It is
the most impressive exponent of the
sovereignty of mind over matter.
Yet it is a fact, not less true than
lamentable, that mechanics have
done less for agriculture than for
any other prominent department
of human industry. Has this re
suited from intrinsic difficulties
growing out of the nature of the op
erations to be performed, or from
the general lack of intelligence and
cultivation among those engaged in
farm labor, or from the absence of
necessity to stimulate invention,
which was not felt while a virgin
soil was yielding superabundant
supplies for populations compara
tively sparse ? Whatever may have
been tho cause, it is gratifying to
know, that, during the last few
years, the attention of mechanics
has been earnestly directed to the
invention of agricultural implements
and machinery. The voluminous
records of the Patent Office, and
the extensive and imposing cata
logues of agricultural warehouses
demonstrate conclusively that the
American mind is fertile in in veil*
tive resourcees, and at the same
time, that machinery can be adapt
ed to almost every agricultural pro
cess. Within the short period allu
ded to, production, has been im
measurably increased by it, while
at the same time*, living uxuado has
been relieved, of exhausting drudg
ing in a like proportion. Especially
is this true of the agriculture of
the Northern' States. It has been
asserted by high authority, that the
invention and introduction of labor
saving implements and machinery
into Northern agriculture during the
late war, operated as an equivalent
to the abstraction of human and an
imal labor from tho field by the war,
.and that the substitution of machin
ery for equino and human muscle
:alone maintained production at its
lanti-vvar standard, and turnished
supplies to their immense armies
•during that exhaustive period,
which -otherwise would have been
aiqpoMibJe. Th#ir labor-saving de
vicee ane introduced into every
branch<«f farm labor. They sow
and plant by machinery. They cul
tivate largely by machinery. They
harvest by machinery. By ma
chinery they mow, reap and bind,
load, unload and stack. By ma
chinery, they gather their fruit, pare
their apples, grind and press them
into cider They milk and churn
and manufacture cheese by machin
ery. Machinery is a universal ad
junct of Yankee labor. It is eo-ex
tcusive with their industrial opera
Lions. It is found everywhere—in
the. house, in the dairy, in the barn,
in the garden, in the orchard, in the
field, and throughout the infinitely
diversified operations of the shop.
Their industrial operations are as
sisted by it at every point. Every
process is abridged by it. Median
ical skill shifts the drudgery of la
bor from muscle to wood and iron.
Cheapness and expedition are
achieved by it; and by it, sweat
and toil are evaded. The Yankees
are a people of machines. For
this, among Qther reasons, they are
industrially our superiors. For
this reason human labor is vastly
more productive, and hence vastly
better remunerated. In Massachu
setts, possessing a naturally ster
ile soil, the average price of farm
labor by the year, is §175 ! In Geor
gia, with natural productiveness
Vastly superior, it is —what ? And
why the difference ? It is a grave
problem ; but machinery and edu
cated labor furnish a key to its so
lution. Lands in Massachusetts are
worth perhaps ten times as much
{)er acre in the market, as our own,
>ecause, among other reasons, they
produce by the aid of machinery
and skilled labor, a money value
larger in proportion' to the human
labor employed than our own.—
Yankee prosperity is a cogent illus
tration of the advantages derivable
from the use of labor-saving imple
ments and machinery. Doxa.

strengthen the nervous organization. The
EXPECTORANT does this to an astonishing
degree. Itisac'ive l»u‘ mild and congenial,
imparting functional energy and natural

It eqalizes the “nervous influence,”
producing quiet and composure.

mal s, says: “Bearing in nund that the
blood is remarkably deficient in red corpus
cles, and the known property of iron to cor
rect. this condition, theory suggests it as the
most to he relied on, tlie best of which is the
Citrate.” Citrate of Iron enters largely into
the composition of English Female Bitters,
combined with powerful vegetable tonic of
rare qualities.
Among the mountains of Tennessee and
thepiney woods of Mississippi, is found a
certain hard and flinty root, which has been
in secret use by some old midwives for
many years, possessing magic powers in reg
'dating and restoring all females suffering
with any attrition of the womb. This root
we have obtained, gave it a fair test in our
practice and it is now one of the principle in
gredients in ik.se Bitters. Other powerful
uterine and general tonics also enter into its
composition. We also adi Leptandra or
Black root, sufficient to act upon the liver
and keep the bowels open.
Blooming Young Gii’ls,
Middle aged matrons, those at the critical pe
riod, and the aged grandmother, are all cured
by the use of our English Female Bitters,
now prescribed aud used by physicians all
over the country.
If you are troubled with Falling of the
womb, attended with a sense of weight and
bearing down pain in the back and side, and
other attendant evils, English Female Bitters
will give entire relief.
Those at the “turn of life,” mothers after
confinement, and all others (male or female)
who are convalescents from any protracted
or debilitating complaint, who gain strength
slowly, and whose digestion is slow and im
perfect, will find these Bitters the very thing
their system demands. It gives a pow
erful appetite, aids and assists Digestion,
arouses the liver, strengthens mentally and
physically, and (ills the whole system with
pure blood coursing through its channels.
Common Grog-Shop Bitters.
Empty Bitter Bottles, of various styles,
can be found around almost every dwelling
aud cabin tkrou/liout the land. Their taste
is pleasant, aud ate advertised to cure almost
every disease, while the manufacturers know
they possess no medicinal properties wiiatev
er. They are so many disguises for exceed
ingly common beverages which do not, nor
cannot possibly cure any one.
Beware of these pleasant bit ers in quart
bottles, they contain a sting for your vitals,
and he who bnys them carries a ‘torper’s’’
gioginto his house. One man who knows
nothing about medicine, says his big bottles
of common stuff will cure chills and fever,
iheumati°m aud consumption; another,
whose bottle is very fancy, cures all impuri
ties of the blood, makes old men young,
casts out devil , rector. 8 siyht to the blind,
and numerous other miracles: while y. tan
other, who presumes every man a drunkard,
proposes to cure colic, ingiowiiig nails, yel
low fever heart disease and love sick maid
