Rev. R. A. Holland.
The following is the text of the
letter of Rev. R. A. Holland, with
drawing his membership from the
Methodist Church, alluded to brif
y in our last issue:
Baltimore, February 6, 1871.
Rev. S. S. Roszell, 1). I) :
Dear Sir —l write to notify you,
as Presiding Elder of the District
in which I lately held an appoint
ment from the Baltimore Confer
ence, that I have severed my con
nection with the Methodist Episco
pal Church South, by becoming a
candidate for orders in the Protest
ant Episcopal Church I need not
speak of the motives which impell
ed me to this course, further than
to declare that every step of it, has
been taken at the command and
cheered by the benedictions of con
Science.
I leave the Methodist Church
with a sorrow that shrinks from the
mockery of expression. It is the
church of my lather. In it I was
born and nourished, and received
the enduring mould of my charac
ter. From its pulpits I first heard
the Word of Life, and learned how
to prove by faith the preciousness
of Christ. While yet a youth it
gave me a place among its preach
ere, and since then, during a minis
try of nearly ten years, it has hon
ored me with promotion beyond my
deserving. All ray intertwining
flowers of friendship have grown
up within its borders and beneath
its genial culture. All the diversi
fied threads of my reminiscence
combine to weave its imago in the
very texture of my life. To leave
it is to tear the heart itself ia twain ;
better this than a union which can
not be prolonged without dissimu
lation.
I wish through you to bid the
brethren an affectionate farewell.—
They are none the less my brethren
because I have ceased to bear the
name of Methodist. However va
rying in our opinions of ecclesiasti
cal lights and principles, we still
worship the same Father, love the
same Saviour, partake, of the same
Spirit, and seek to enter, through
by different gates, the same Celes
tial city, the Throne in the midst of
which is the meeting place of all
the pure in heart. Let us then cher
ish the charitable hope that when
these thick fogs of time, looking
through which we so often misjudge
each other, shall have vanished at
the radieut appearing of Him who
sheds from his face the sunshine of
Heaven, the likeness of that face
may be seen in the features ol all
our souls, forever transfigured by
the sight of its glory.
R. A. HOLLAND.
How Rain is Form bd.—To un
derstand the philosophy of this phe
nomenon, essential to the very ex
istence of plants and animals, a few
facts, derived from observation and
along train of experiments, must
be remembered. VVere the atmos
phere everywhere, at all times, at a
uniform temperature, we should
never have rain, hail or snow. The
Water absorbed by it in evapora
tion from the sea and the earth’s
surface would descend in an imper
ceptible vapor, or cease to be ab
fljrbed by the air, when it was once
fully saturated.
The absorbing power of the at
mosphere, and consequently its ca
pability to retain humidity, is pro
pGi'tionably greater in cold than in
warm air. The air near the sur
face of the earth is warmer than
it is in the region of tho clouds.—
The higher wo ascend from the
earth, the colder we find the at
mospliere. Hence the perpetual
snow on very high mountains in
the very hottest climates Now,
when, from evaporation, the air is
highly saturated with vapor—though
it be invisible—if its temperature
is suddenly reduced by cold cur
rents descending from above, or
rushing from a higher to a lower
latitude, its capability to retain mois
ture is diminished, clouds are form
ed, and the result is rain. Air con
deuses as it ccols, and, like a sponge
filled with water and compressed,
pours out water which its diminish
ed capacity cannot hold. llovv sin
gular, yet how simple an arrange
ment for watering the earth.
Husband and Wife— A man is
a good husband, you say. It is
well. But what would he have
been with another wife? No hus
band at all, perhaps, or worse than
none. His goodness is his wife’s
or more his wife’s than his. It is
well, we say; that under any influx
enoos ho can be good; but let him
not take all the credit of his good
ness to himself. The bigger share
is due to his better half. Some
might be good, if tried, to two or
throe in succession ; some, but to
one; aud some, alas,.to none. A
woman is a good wife. This, too,
is well. But how much of her
goodness is her husband’s? She can
not tell. Perhaps one-half. Per
haps two-thirds. Then let her not
be proud. Let her keep from
boasting. Let her cherish modest
thoughts of herself, and form char
itable judgment of others, and her
virtue will be all the greater, and
her comfort all the safer.
The shad lives but a single
year. It is hatched in the early
summer—descends the stream as
soon as largo enough—feeds and
fattens in the winter at the mouth
of the stream —ascends in the spring
to deposit its spawn decends to die
at the bottom of the ocean. This
fact accounts for the uniformity in
the size of the fish. A Connecticut
river shad seldom goes bej’ond sev
en pounds and the variation in size
is comparatively slight. The bass,
on the other hand, which is known
to live many years, varies from half
a pound up.
A medical exchange says:
“Onion poultices will cure a felon.”
And now will not some individual,
having the good of the country at
heart, slap a warm one to Ben But
ler, and continue the operation un
til a cure is t ffected or the remedy
exhausted.

LUNCS, CHEST OR THROAT!
THE EXPECTORANT Is composed exclu
sively of Herbal and Mucilaginous prod
acts, which permeate the very
SUBSTANCE OF THE LUNGS,
causing them to throw off the acrid milter
which collects in the Bronchial Tubes, and at
(lie same time forms a soothing -coating, re
lieving the irritation which produces the
cough.
The object to be obtained is to cleanse the
organ of all impurities ; to nourish and
strengthen it when it has become impaired
and enfeebled by disease, to renew and invig
orate the circulation of the blood, and
strengthen the nervous organization. The
EXPECTORANT does this to an astonishing
degree. Itisaciive l>ui mild and congenial,
imparting functional energy and natural
strength. It affords Qxygen to vitalize the
blood and Nitrogen to assimilate the matter —
It eqalizes the “nervous influence,”
producing quiet and composure.
TO CONSUMPTIVES
It is invaluable, as it immtdiately relieves
the difficult breathing and harraseing cough
which attends that disease.
FOR ASTHMA
It is a specific—one dose often relieving the
distressing choking, aud producing calm and
pleasant repose.
FOR CROUP
No mother should ever be wilhout a bottle of
the EXPECTOR ANT in the house. We have
numerous certificates of it having relieved, al
most instantly, the little sufferer, when death
appeared almost inevitable.
MOTHERS BE ADVISED !
Keep it on Hand!
This dread disease requites prompt action ; as
soon as the hoarse, hollow cough is heard,
apply the remedy, and it is easily subdued;
