Green Manuring.
TT(‘ copy as follows from the
Nashville Union and American :
The most economical method of
enriching land is the turning under
of green crops just before blossom
ing. The plants that are best suit
ed for this purpose are those which
expose to the sun a large surface of
foliage, and throw out a great quan
tity of roots. Clover, lucerne, es
parsette, bean, pea, lupin, spurry,
etc., are usually styled the enrich
ing crops, and are the only sure
means of reclaiming many soils.—
Upon the sandy soils in Holstein,
where any application of manure is
rendered unprofitable, because of
the porous nature of the soil and
subsoil, the constant practice with
farmers is to sow spurry, (Sperguia
Arvenis) in the fall, and plow un
der in the spring; or sow in March,
May or July, plowing hi each crop,
before seeding, as the reproductive
functions when brought into activi
ty, are found to be more exhaustive
to the soil than the litter would he
of benefit. It is said that the worse
shifting land may be fixed and
made productive by this plant, and
that green manuring every other
year with it not only nourishes the
alternate crop of rye but gradually
increases the productiveness of the
soil. In addition to the valuable
properties of this plant as a fertili
zer, it is highly esteemed in the
Netherlands as fodder, and cows are
said to give more milk, and of rich
er quality, when fed upon it, either
green or as fodder, than when fed
upon any other plant. Upon the
sandy" soils of West Tennessee,
where so much land has been suf
sered to go to waste in consequence
of the difficulties and expense of
manuring, wo would recommend
the trial of this plant. Seed might
be obtained through some dealer in
New York, or Robert Buist, Jr.,
of Philadelphia, would likely be
able to supply them.
The common black pea sown
broadcast, half a bushel to the acre,
about the first of June, has been
used with great success by many
farmers in this country living in sit
uations where the common red clo
ver will not grow. It must not be
forgotten that all green crops, with
the exception of those which have
long tap roots, should invariably
bo turned under just before blos
soming. At that season their fertil
izing properties are at their maxi
mum. The leaves of flowers give
Off nitrogen ; and as this is an
agent highly conducive to the fer
tility of the soil it is desirable to re
tain as much of .it in the land as
possible.
The beneficial action of green
crops on land is due to four causes :
1. To their action in shading the
land. As shade is highly promo
tive of the improvement of land by
keeping it moist, thereby increasing
its capacity for absorbing the gases
and the prevention of the dissipa
tion of volatile particles by the ac
tion of the sun, care should always
be taken to sow a sufficiency of
seed to keep the land well covered
with whatever plant may be used
as a fertilizer. The heavier the
crop and the more completely it
covers the land the greater will be
the improvement.
2. To their tractile effects :
The large surface of their foliage
enables them to draw from the air
three-fourths of their sustenance ;
while their roots, descending be
yond the usual depth of tillage,
bring up to the surface valuable
mineral iugredients; all of which,
by plowing in the green crop, is
added to the surface soil, and makes
it richer in organic matter, and as
often as this process is repeated,
the richer the soil becomes.
3. To their mechameal action in
loosening the soil, opening the
pores and changing the color of the
land to a darker hue. Other things
being equal, land is always more
productive as these three conditions
are increased.
4. To the purely chemical changes
which the turning under of vegeta
ble matter induces. When green
vegetable matter decays in the open
air, the carbonic acid escapes and
is lost; but if buried beneath the
surface, carbonic acid is formed less
rapidly and other compounds are
generated favorable to vegetation.
As the sap of plants contain nitro
gen, the formation of hew chemi
cal combinations with other ele
ments of organic matter are also in
duced, such as ammonia, etc. It is
a well known fact in agricultural
chemistry that the production of
ammonia takes place most abun
dantly where the oxygen of the un
does not gain ready access, and
hence subsoiliug and green manu
ring, and the penetration of the
earth by the roots of plants, are all
favorable to the production of am
monia, the most stimulating as well
as the most powerful of all the fer
tilizers.
No other green, crop however,
will bear any comparison with the
common red clover irr clayey, lime
stone soils. It matters but little
how poor the land, if this plant can
be well set, the original fertility of
the land will soon be restored,
whether it is plowed under as a
green crop, or left to deetty upon the
surface. A beautiful illustration of
the beuefits to be derived from clo
ver occurred on a farm a few years
ago near Hopkinsville, Ky. An en
terprising citizen bought 1000 acres
of well worn land, indeed almost
totally exhausted, ,at ten dollars per
acre. lie broke it up and sowed
wheaton it in the fall, and in the
spring seeded it with clover. After
this he sowed gypsum, two barrels
to the acre, and secured a good
stand of clover, but made but little
wheat. The. succeeding- spring it
was again top-dressed with plaster,
and the clover plowed up in June,
and w heat supervened in the fall.—
He continued this for a few years,
and the land increased in value from
ten dollars per acre to seventy five
in less than ten years.
