friAWilnt; that a great many fruit
trees have been planted during the
tteaami, we offer a few suggestions
as to their future management. We
ofFer themes the result of observa
tion ratljer Ufipk of expe
rience, and as the teach mgs of com
mon sense.
Young trees should be carefully
mulched in June, to secure the ten
der roots against the damaging ef
fects of heat 1 and dfougbt, and the
soil kept light and free from weeds
and grass, lu giving fjriu, to .the
tree, care should be taken to hate
the lower limbs as near to the
ground as they will grow. By this
plan the bodies are protected
against excessive heat, and the roots
ure kept moist, by tlie shade and the
mulching supplied by the falling
leaves. It may be objected to,
that the lower limbs'- will interfere
with the proper cultivation of the
orchard. Interference is exactly
what w needed, to keep the plow
from lacerating the lateral roots, so
commonly broken, at the time they
are performing their most impor
tant function.
It is a fact in the physiology of
fruit bearing trees, that the roots
which strike the deepest into the
ground supply the food tfTat condu
ces to the growth of the stem and
branches, whilst the lateral roots,
feeding near the surface, supply the
material for the perfection of the
fruit, and hence the importance of
nbt breaking or disturbing them. —
To insurd theiP not being broken,
the lowe( lynbs should not ladurijj
the passage under them of the horse
and plow.
As soon as the trees are too large
to be injured by hogs, the space be
tween them should be planted alter
nately in corn and oats, and the
hogs turned in as soon as the grain
is in the dough state. This system
enriches and mellows the soil, and
invites the extension of the surface
roots in search of food for the
growing and ripening fruit. A
great additional advantage from
this mode of treatment is, that the
grain will be ready for feeding
down at the time thtrt fruit, perfo
rated by the borers, begins to drop
ofF—all of which will ho
by the hogs before the worm es
capes from its nest. This is the
ifiotft reliable protection against the
destructive worm that we have
known to be tried. Common sense
sustains this theory, and a trial will
demonstrate it to be the true one.
Ashes as a Cattle Feed.
In a late number of the Maine'
Farmer, a gentleman gives his expe
rience iu treating neat stock affect
ed with a habit of eating wood,
chewing bones, etc*. His cattle
were one spring affected in this
way, they become thin in flesh, re
fusing to eat hay, and presented a
sickly appearance. He had an ini
pression that their food lackedj the
constituents for making bone, but
his neighbors used bone meal with
out noticing any good results what
ever.
Last sprihg he put about four
bushels of leached ashes in his barn
yard, and threw out to them about
a shovet full each day. They all
eat it with evident relish. After
turning them out to pasture, ho put
one peck of dry ashes per week on
the ground in the pasture. They
cat it all up and gnawed oft’ the
grass where it had been lying. The
cattle began to improve, gaining
flesh and looking better than they
Jiad for several years.,
He says that this morbid appetite
was unnoticed years ago, for the
land was new and “ ashey ” from
the burning of the land clearings.
He has another proof of the val
ue of ashes for stock from this inci
dent: He had a large tub full of
leached ashes which remained in it
fbr some time. It was afterwards
used as a watering tub ; and when
the cattle drauk from it they would
lick and gnaw the sides and bottom
of the tub, actually biting Out pieces
and eating them.
Latterly lie gives out a quart of
ashes mixed with the same quantity
of salt to twelve head of cattle,
about once a week, and finds it to
agree with them wonderfully.
Improving our Common Fowls.
A selection of cockerels for stock
birds may be made by the time
they weigh one and a half or two
ponds, and are fit to market as
broilers. Large full breasted, broad
backed, flat iron shaped, strong
limbed, small-headed birds should
be chosen. They will of course be
.taken from tho earliest broods-, and
thus come from the best early lay
ing hens. It makes a great/differ
ence in the stock what eggs are
hatched; those of many hens ought
never to be hatched. It rarely pays
to winter more than twice, any but
superior hens, of choice b r eeds, and
raising well marked chickens Keep
only fchdice h Cits' oter winter, but
thin out the ranks and fill < fbem
with young pullet-.
In selecting.pullets one should be
guided by the character of tho ben
that laid the egg, in each particular
case, if possible; by their large size
and early maturity, perfection of
general characteristics and by their
health and vivacity. Especial
points should be a full, breast,
straight breast bone, a flat back,
broad between the shoulders, deep
bpdy, small, short, delicate legs and
fleet,-small head, full, clear eye, and
smooth" unruffled plumage. Such
will be gentle, quiet and familiar ;
if not, these points must also be
sought.-'— The American Agricul
turist. *
A Question to be Answered.—
As the South produced 4,200,000
bales of cotton in 1870 —or more by
909,000 bales, than the average
crop from iB6O to 1860, and only
475,000 bales less than the crop of
’59-’6o—is not this fact alone a
complete answer to the thousand li
bels of alleged disorder and lawless
ness in the South?— New York
