A Live AgriTultui’al "Society.
Wc are* much with the
■way the Spalding county Agricul
tural Society keep up an in {crest in
agriculture and kindred Hw-ihiches
of industry. They hold semi
monthly meetings, at different
pfciees in the county, at which in
teresting repprts arc read from the
vice presidents in each militia Dis
trict. From these reports much
valuable information is gained. We
give a specimens, of these reports,
as follows :
vice-president y. f. gray’s report.
• I have 'consumed soVrfe' little time
going round examining the condi
tion of crops in my vicinity.
I find the desires and efforts of
the planter to be in sdine degree in
the right direction ; i. c , they are
leaving off the cotton ami have
sown wheat and oats in abundance,
and have planted corn plentifully.
Wheat is good, and a great deal of
it. Oats are finer than I have ever
jeon in this section, and more of
them. I have seen some little
mould in wheat and oats, but little
rust, and that upon the blade; I
have examined several crops, found
no rust on the stalk. I have found
but one crop of wheat seriously in
jured with the mould ; that was in
Fayette county. I find wheat, gen
. qrally speaking, much better on bro
. ken land; it is clearer of the mould
or rust. Col’ll is looking well where
it has been w r ejl ; but
generally speaking, the people are
very much behind with their work.
Some gardens are looking" well, add
extremely forward. Rye and bar
ley crops arc very scarce. One or
two of my neighbors have been
planting rye for six weeks. As for
clover and grasses, it is hardly
worth while to mention. I know
of but one patch -of clover. The
prospect of a fruit crop is flattering,
with no exception. As to the grape,
I find people generally making some
effort in that direction ; still I am
very little in favor of the grape, es
pecially for the purpose of making
wine, as I class wine with other in
toxicating liquors. As to stock, I
find them in better condition, and
really better stock than I have seen
' for several years. As to hands,
they are working better than they
have formerly done for me. I think
the ladies generally are having good
success with their poultry. As to
cotton, it is the worst prospect for
a crop that I have ever seen Consid
ering the quantity planted.
Another good thing recently in
augurated by tliis society is a month
ly fair. Os course these are not
expected to be very extensive, af
fairs, but they must prove extreme*
ly pleasant ; while they are calcu
lated to accomplish much good.
These county fairs have been
tested in several counties, and the
results are invariably gratifying to
all concerned.
We givo below a portion of the
premium list of the Spalding coun
ty society, to bo awarded at their
fair next month.
those remarks for the
purpose of calling the attention of

a matter of importance which has

To Cure Scratches.—Somebody
wants to know how to cure scratch
es on his horse. I will give a rem
edy I have used for years with uni
versal success: Take two pounds
of Glauber salts, one pound of sul
phur, and one-quarter pound of salt
peter ; pulverize^all finely together,
and give one heaping tablespoonful
once a day, thrown on the feed.
Now for the feet. Take one pint
of neat's foot oil and one-fourth
pound of fine cut chewing tobacco,
ami simmer them together. Strain
out the tobacce, and bottle for use.
Take Castile soap and warm water,
and wash the parts • affected clean
and dry thoroughly before applying
the oil. If the ankles are sore it
would bo well to put cloths on them
to keep the air from them while
they are drying; when dry anoint
them well with the oil for a few .
days; then wash Jus before, dry well,
and apply the oil again. If thor
oughly applied, it will effect a per
manent cure. Keep the feet clean,
and scratches will not be .likely to
return.

Laura P. Fair.
Fe’w ‘pages'of lirtVian 'crime, in
any age or country, are blacker and
bloodier than the’ records of the
California murderess. Many of our
leading papers have published a
full account of the trial. We will
present a few facts which may
point-A moral, if they fail to feed a
sensational appetite.
I f , is-said Laura Fair was borne in
Mississippi.- Went, when young,
to New Orleans, married there at
10, a merchant named Stone, who
soon • died, married * again a Mr.
Grajsor, left him in six months and
went with her mother to-San Fran
cisco. Here she became the wife
'of Cob W. 13. FYfii*, a gentleman of
acknowledged accomplishments and
considerable wealth. So infatuated
was lie with his beautiful wife that
lie permitted her to gratify every
caprice and whim, and in a few
years she had squandered his splen
did fortune. But when he became
a bankrupt she cast him off and
soon found another protector. So
deeply did this disgrace wear on
him, that in 1858 he ended' his life
ivith a pistqj. She leaves San Fran
cisco and opens a hotel at Virginia
City-, here she first sees her latest
victim, the Hon. A. P. Crittenden
a distinguished member of the San
Francisco,bar. She fires a pistol
at Crittenden . and wounds him in
the arm because-lie refuses to sepa
rate from his wife. Mrs.Fail’, after
spending §'70,000 of bis mofiey,
shoots Crittenden tlu’ough the heart
while in the Unbrace at his Wife
and child. Mrs. F. is said to be
surpassingly handsome, a woman
of education and accomplishments,
ambitious, extravagant, and under
the influeuce.of a crafty, avaricious
mother.
SuA is a short sketch of Laura
Fair, now a convicted murderess in
a California prison.

Formerly at Double Wells.
ALSO, A GENUINE PATTERN OF
THE GRISWOLD GIN.
THE underrifctwd, having resumed the manufacture of the above Gin, preposes to make it,
whii%it was before the war—The favorite of the South. Our work stands upon its mer*
its, and waJhink this a sufficient guarantee. We have secured the services of some of the
best machanhal talent iu the Northern shops, in addition to some of the best workmen from
the shop of the late Samuel Gkiswould. Mr. Charles Gardner, who served eight years
apprenticeship under E Carver & Co..at East Bridgewater, Mass., and who was employed
as Superintendent of the Doglil; Wells shop, lrom the commencement of the manufaemre es
the Moore Cotton Gin, nnlil its suspension, is again at his post, and will give each Gin his
personal inspection before it leaves the shop.
Iu calling the attention of planters to our Colton Gins, we desire that they should lkitice
the improvements that we offer, which are substantially as follows .
A PORTABLE ROLL BOX,
For obtaining itny inclination ul tlie Gin Rib or Grate', i&used the obj -ct of which is to ini
prove in the quantity ginned, or lessen the quantity and improve the quality of lint. Also, to
gin damp or wet cotton ; to alter the picking or separating the lint, from the seed —either to
take more lint off or less lint from the seed, as circumstances require. We use both the com
mon Roll Box and a S winging Front. The latter is arranged to let out all the seeds and hulls
in a moment, and is vety easily managed.
THE GIX BRUSH
We make, cannot be excell-d by any hair brush used. The bristles are all drawn iu by a
cord, and the timber is all s -ba led from the best lumber, well seasoned ; and eV'ery Brush
is made perfectly fire at and rat proof.
CtLIIsDEE AX J) .BIUJSH BOXES
Are lioth oecil ating 1 and plain. Can furnish either, as. may be ordered. We line them with
the best babbit metal.
GIX SAWS.
We make al the saws that we nse from the best English Cast Steel, and of any rifce that
may be desired. We employ, tn sup-; intend and manufacture onr Saws, one of the best saw
makers iu the South; and our machinery for the mauu.fac.ture of Gin Saws cannot be excell
ed.
COTTGX SEED CRUSHING MILL.
We are the only • uewjso'ul manuringam s. of this important and useful invention—the Cot
ton Gin, with the Cotton .Seed Crushing Mill attached. It, will hardly be necessary here to
allude to The iinpeiiFas:. vins# and @c nuuvical use of crashed cotton’seed, as a manure. We
received a gold im tl <l,.aa-i premium, Loin the Fair of the Cotton Planter’s Convention, held
in Mac mi Ga., ISfTO, for (he bt-st Cation S,. and Crushers attached to'the Gm Stand, to crush t! e
seed as last us ii eM iipts from, the Roll. We refer to some oil the many certificates that we
have on the subject.
TRIAL OF THE GIXS.
We keep constantly on hatid seed eotton, and every Gin is tried before it leaves the shop
old or new'ones.
REPAIR OE GEN S.
We have a complete assortment of the very best Cotton .Machinery in the country, and
make repairing of ohbGins a specialty. Planters will do well to send" in their old Gins and
have them made as good as new. at a much less cost than anew Gin can be bought'for. Send
on your orders and old Ging early. ° <
