Jimp early iVnfi’e would
like to j>l;i*4Ki jic<*k of sound fruit
fronvodri‘ts out; year traftnplanted,
whether ii ho apple, poor, oliorry or
plum tree. To wait, they have not
lean ed, and “-don’t want to.” An
orchard is planted this year; during
the season it is cultivated after a
fashion, but as it is troublesome to
plow or Cultivate between the trees,
and especially as- it endangers the
life of the to bark it or bend it,
the cliltivafion is only so-to. Fre
quently the ground is seeded the
second seasdn already, because it
will be so nice t y pick up the fruit
out of the tall and velvety grtrss,
wfcich is expected to lx; so thick and
rapk*|f)Rt no damage will ueciue to
the falling fruit. Surely there vvil!
lie no damage to the fruit, because
there will be no fruit: In nine en
cases out of ten, the trees will be
nether ( dead, nor ajiv.e tor a few
years ; and then, death will be acer
taintjq and all the cost and labor ex
pended will be a total loss.
When tbe orchard around is cnl
tivaUnl to small grain, especially
oars, it in almost as disastrous. We
have known a peach orchard to be
entirely killed by having two suc
cessive crops of oats sown in it.
rjChe facts are, trees ought, to be
cultivated for the fir.-t five or six
years until they become well estab
lished. If, iu the meantime, a tree
dies out, plant another and a better
one, as soon as possible. Up to this
time be satisfied with a few sample
or Hpeiyulon bruits., li |Ut> trees
bloom and set full (and we are now
speaking especially of tipples aud
pears,) prune out the fruit spurs,
except enough for a very limited
crop. Alter the fifth or sixth year
seed to clover, and allow no grass
of any kind, especially not timothy
Or blue grass, to get a foothold.
Even with clover it is best to mulch
around and near the tree.
But, says one, what crop shall we
raise in our orchards that will be
profitable, pay for the labor an,d be
a benefit to the trees. We answer
for a rotation : first year, potatoes;
second, corn —drilled and used for
soiling; otherwise a small variety.
Third year, buckwheat. Sow the
buckwlieat early; plow under when
ill bloom (about .rune) and sow a
second crop. Tbis K if you must
save you can do so; but it is
better to allow it to fall down,
allowing your turkeys and chick
ens to do the Uarvcsting. Buck
wheat will leave the ground in
fine condition for another crop of
either or potatoes. It is much ea.
sicr destroyed than weeds.
Blackberry Wine.
The blackberry season will soon
be upon us, and we would urge our
readers to make the most of it.—
This delicious fruit is not the less
valuable, intrinsically, because it
grows spontaneously all over the
country, and may he had in profu
sion for the picking. Apart from
the delicious pies, cordials and mar
malades, it yields a wine, with prop
er manipulation, superior to the
best claret that can be bought in
our market; and is also valuable
for its medicinal properties. How
many families throughout our fruit
ful Southland might supply their
tables the year round with black
berry wine, almost without money,
by the exercise of a little care and
industry and inteHigenee at tho
proper season, thus adding a luxu-
ry to the home supplies.
To manufacture the wine, mash
thfe befi'ics in a vessel —a jar is the
beat—cover the vessel and let them
stand for twenty-four or thirty
hours. Then strain the juice by
squeezing through a cotton or linen
cloth into jars. Strain again once
a day for two or three successive
days, uutil the juice becomes clear
ed of dregs. This being done, add
three pints of water to one gallon
of the juice. Then put into it two
and a half pounds of the best brotvn
sugar to the gallon of juice and wa
ter. After standing two or three
days closely covered in jars, strain
it again through a flannel cloth. It
will be finished and ready to be put
away in air-tight vessels—demi
johns are the best for the reason of
their being of glass.— Col. Sun.
Watering Horses. llorsos
should be watered from a brook,
pond or river, and not wells or
springs, as the well water is hard
and colder, while the running
stream is soft and rather warm.—
The preference of horses is for the
soft, even though it bo muddy wa
ter, to that which is hard. Horses
should be allowed in summer time
at least four waterings a day, and a
hall bucket at a time, and in winter
a pailful may be allowed morning
aud evening, which is sufficient to
assuage their thirst without causing
them to bloat or puff up. Care,
however, should be taken that the
horse is not put to work immedi
ately after drinking a full bucket of
•water, especially if they are required
to go fast, because digestion and
severe exertion can never go on to
gether, and moreover purging is
apt to ensue. In some cases bro
ken wind or heaves is thus pro
duced. Avoid giving warm or te
pid water to horses that are often
driven from home, because cold or
well water will then be given them,
which will be liable to produce a
congestive chill, followed by lung
fever, and in some eases colic.—
"When horses are thus carefully wa
tered, if one or more of them should
refuse their accustomed feed, some
thing is wrong, and they should not
be taken out of the stable to work
or driven further that day, but an ex
aminatioh*shonld be made as to the
cause,-with a view to its removal.—
