Management of Balky Horses.
The first and belter wayis never
to have a balky horse. If horses are
handled property they will never
balk. After a horse has been “fool
ed, w as the horsemen very properly
say, when a good horse balks, it will
require a vast amount of cautions
management to correct the bad

and excellent horses are managed
so improperly that they soon be
come almost incorrigible baulkers;
whereas, if a driver of ordinary in

imals would have always been ' true
as steel. If a horse is prpnqrly
managed lie will draw with all his
might, trot or run as his driver may
indicate, until he drops in his har
ness from utter exhaustion.
After it horse has really copt.ract,-
cd the habit of balking, the vice
can only be cured by kindness and
gentle treatment. The more he ‘is
whipped, kicked, clubbed, and han
dled roughly, the more obstinate lie
will be. Hence, throw away whips,
arid dubs, &ud lyt thti gentle treat

overloading. A person can coax out
or a horse a service that whips and
kicks never can secure. Always
provide some means to enable a
team to start a heavy load easily:—
Avoid stopping—if possible- where
It will be difficult to start. It Is
better to allow a team to stop for a
moment, whcn.hanling up a sloqie,
than to allow it. to stop in a place
where it would be difficult tq start
Tlie writer once was accustomed to
carry pieces of plank to the field
for the wheels of the wagon to rest
upon, while it was being loaded
with potatoes ©rcorD,so that the
team wonkl move off readily with
a heavy load,, that, they could never
start if the wheels had been allow
ed to sink in tlve ground while tlie
load was iiMWeasing in weigiu.—
Wh on a horse balks on account J of
exhaustion, aj|oiv the animal to rest
until he IVfis reeSvcfed strength to
draw his load. Above all beware
ol too heavy loads, of impatience,
or roughness, and of’overdriving.—

THE GRISWOLD GIN.
THE undersigned, haying resumed the manufacture of the above Gin, proposes to make it
what it was before the war—The favorite of the South. Our work stands upon its mer
its and we think this a sufficient, guarantee. We‘ have secured the services of some of the
best machanical talent in the Northern shops, in addition to some of the best workmen from
the shop of the late Xamukl Guiswoki.j). Mr. Ciiaulss Garonbb, who served eight years
apprenticeship under E. Carvk.r & Co.,ai.East Bridgewater, Mass., and who was employed
as Superintendent of tile Double Wells shop. Irom the commencement of the manufacture of
the Moore Cotton Gin, until its suspension, is again at his post, aud will give each Giju his
. personal inspetttion before it leaves the shop.
In calling the attention of planters to our Cotton Gins, we desire that they should notice
the improvements that we offer,.which are substantially as follows .
A PORTABLE ROLL BOX,
For obtaining anv inclination of the Gin Kih or Grate, is nsed ; the object of which is to im
prove in the qaantity ginned, or lessen the quantity and improve the quality of lint. Also, to
gin damp or wet cotton ; to alter the picking or separating the lint from the seed—either to
take more lint off or less lint from the seed, as eireumstauces require. We use both the com
mon Roll Box and a Swinging Front." The latter is arranged to let out all tlte seeds and halls
in a moment, and ;s Very easily managed. • > >■
THE am BRUSH , /
We make, cannot be excelled by any hair brush used. The bristles are all drawn in by a

COTTON. SEED CRUSHING MILL. v
We are Hie only mecessful manufactlirers-pf this important, and useful invenlion—the Cot
ton Gin, with the Cotton Seed CiUslnng Mill attached. It, will hardly he necessary here to
allude to the immense saving and ecouomiral use -of crushed cotton seed, as a manure. We
received a gold medal, as i premium, from the Fair of the Cotton Planter’s Convention, held
.in Macon Ga.. 1888, for the last Cotton Seed Crushers attached to the Gin Stand, to crush the
seed as fast as it eFcaptsJrom the Roil. We rjfer to some of the many certificates that we
have oil the subject.
