But bo it was. Despite Ihe desire and anx

On Monday we repaired to the scene again,
in quest of u large buck, but tailed to get a

Destruction to Rats.-The rats having
accumulated on my place to an alarming ex
tent, doing much damage to my grain and
other produce,l tried various rat poisons with
but little success. I offered my four little
boys a reward of two cents a head for all the
rats they would kill. They went to work and
made several little plank boxes, nnd set them
with triggers. It has been two weeks since
they commenced, and they have succeeded in
capturing eighty of the offenders. One boy
has trapped forty-eight. It has been fun for
the boys, a* well as profit. I shall fork over
the reward cheerfully. J. s. W.

Drawing to a Cuts*.—The year with all
its favors aud misfortune*, is rapidly drawing
to a close, and as it does so most people are
casting np accounts to sea how they stand
with the world. But, unfortunately, too
many people fail to get outside of self, and
individual affairs. Too few are thinking 0(
their duties toward God, and the institutions
of His establishment, tor the eternal welfare
ot the human face. Few, indeed, recognize
the claims of the ebdtrck upon them, conse
quently many men, who feel called by the
great Jehovah to abandon all the interests of
self, so far as earthly matters are concerned,
are left at the end of t ight seasons iu finau
cial circles, iu embarrassed and discouiaging
circumstances.
Those who ate expected to minister to ns
in things ol the greatest moment, should have
no occasion to dread the approach of winter,
with the inevitable changes it brings to so
many of them ; aud yet, alas! their claims
arc so often the very least and last in consid
eration with so many. Among the very
first eonsideratiops should always be tl*e
comfort and convenience of our preachers.
Have all our ministers in Cuthbert been
paid their just dues ? Are their affairs in such
condition as to preclude all doubt and fear
as to the comfort of their loved ones ? Let
these questions be considered and answered,
and let every church member, yea, and every
good, peace-loving citizen see to it that the
answer leaves bis (jopsciepee perfectly at
ease.

Ratified.— The taxpayers of Cuthbert. on
Tuesday last, hy an overwhelming majority
ratified the appropriation of $5,000 made by
the City Council, for the purpose of erecting
a suitable building for our Male Institute.-
This is commendable on the part of our citi.

there will soon be in our midst a male
school that will do honor to the place, and
supply, a great want long felt by our commu
nity.

the Trustees, that no time will be lost in

The subscription by citizens, wc believe,
amounts to some SB,OOO or SIO,OOO. one half

the city subscription will place $2,000 more
in their hands during the same month. With
this amount in hand, and the remaining pay

know ihe work will progre a rapidly and sat

In a suit brought in a New York
court by the widow of a passenger
killed by the explosion of the Sta
ten Island steamer, Westfield, to re
cover damages, the owners of the
vessel set up the extraordinary plea
that the passenger had no right on
the boat because, under the laws of
the State, Sunday traveling is a
misdemeanor! That is to say, it
was illegal for the murdered man to
travel ou Sunday, and therefore, le
gal to blow him up on that day.

Editors Appeal : The local editor of the
Telegraph A Messenger thus relieves himself
by giving wholesome advice to bis “ La-
Grange friends.” Just listen :
Look Sharp.— A bill has been introduced
into tbe Legislature “ authorizing the City
Council of LaGrange to issue $25,000 in
bonds, as a subscription to tbe North aud
Souib Railroad P’ We advi-eour LaGrange
friends to “ look sharp,” or Kimball will
come back and get charge of th 5 rond. It
was thought impossible a few months ago to
build a road in Georgia unless H. I. was at
tbe head of it ; and well do we remember
when the people in some of the towns in S.
W. Georgia, ‘to do him honor took delight,”
inviting him to speak to their Sunday schools,
and killing, upon his arrival, the •* fatted
calf.” Alas, how tbe mighty have fallen 1
“ Well do we remember” when Mr. W. C.
G.. “ run a mill ” in Southwest Georgia, and
at the same time edited a column in the Cuth
bert Appeal in the interest of Fort Gaines,
and “ well do we remember ” some of his eu
logies to “H. I. ” and his currency daring
that time. Strange, indeed, that some peo.
pie are so ready to discover the “ mote ” in
othrrs eyes and consider not the “ beam ” iu
their own eyes.
We admit the advice to be good ; but why
could it not have been given without casting
reflection upon “ the people in some of the
towns in Southwest Georgia,” because they
were deceived by Kimball. Its true the
Gunn of the Telegraph & Messenger did not
kill tbe “ tatted calf ” for Kimball when he
arrived, nor did he invite him to make Sab.
bath school speeches, but “ to do him honor
took delight” in advertising his meal and
flour to sell for his currency, and in an editor
rial but a few months ago upon the subject,
s .id he took Kimball money, and advised ev
erybody else to take it, and condemned those
who refused to take it as being prejudiced
against it. The same editorial concludes as
follows : “We will take all we can get of
it for meal-—send it in. Hurrah for Kimball
money.”
We do not join issue with our respected
friend of the Telegraph <fc Messenger through
any unkind feelings towards him—far be it
from us—but write in justice to our entire
community, who have been awfully deceived
and swindled by Kimball. Frieud Gunn
should have had more charity acd realized
his own position more fully in the matter,
before parading and tantalizing publicly an
upright chriitian community, who were inno
cently and unknowingly deceived.
“ Alas, how ” some people can forget.
Another Unsettled Item.
When H. I. Kimball sold the
Opera House to the State of Geor
gia there was a mortgage of $60,000
upon it —which mortgage is still un
paid. This mortgage was for that
amount of inoneY loaned to Kim
ball by the North Western Mutual
Life Insurance Company, to enable
him to pay the purchase money, and
assist in the building.
That mortgage is still unsatisfied.
Not a cent of the principal has ever
been paid, and the interest on it
since May last is due.
Bullock know that mortgage was
against the property when it was
put chased by the Legislature.—
Kimball knew it was unsatisfied
when he deeded it to the State, war
ranting it to be free from all liens.
Bullock paid Robert H. Brown S4OO
to investigate the title, and accept
ed his opinion that the title was
good. Mr. Brown must have known
of the mortgage, for his law part
ner at the time, Judge Hopkins,
knew it.
The Life Insurance Company
named, of which Dr. Win. 11.
White is the efficient agent in this
city, loaned this money here, and
in addition to the security of the
mortgage on the property, required
the building on it to be kept insur
ed, in the sum of $60,000, and the
policies properly assigned to the
North-Western Mutual. Bullock
has been keeping up this Fire Insu
rance, paying the premiums with
tne peoples money, and specifying
on the face of the policies, that the
loss, if any should occur, must be
paid to the company holding this
mortgage.
Another fact is significant. The
deed made by Kimball to the State
of Georgia, has never been recorded,
unless it has been done within a few
days past.
Wo have not yet near reached
the bottom of the frauds and rob
beries perpetrated by the Kimball-
Bullock-Blodgett Ring. Atlanta
Sun.
The disguised men who hung the
three negroes for the murder of
the Park family met no serious re
sistance. The assailants beat down
two doors of the Charleston, Indi
ana jail. The sheriff gave them the
key to the third. It is understood
the negroes made an additional con
fession before their execution. Three
counties contribute the men engag
ed in the execution.
Cure for Nervous Headache.
A well-known Kentucky minister,
subject to severe spells of nervous
headache, was in our office the oth
er day, says an exchange, during
one of those attacks. Major Brown,
ot Mexico, was present, and pro
posed to relieve him in five minutes,
which did most effectually. The
following is the prescription : Take
a desert spoonful ot common soda,
such in making bread, and dissolve
it thoroughly in a quart of cold wa
ter. With this thoroughly sham
poo the head for about five minutes,
scratching the skin of the head and
the back of the neck well with the
finger-nails. Then Tinse the head
with clean cold water. Major
Brown says that he has used this
remedy in perhaps a thousand cases
since 1853, and never once failed to
give relief in five or ten minutes.—
This remedy is for nervous head
ache, and is not for those affections
of the head arising from deranged
stomachs. —American Rural Home.
The Chicago Relief and Aid So
ciety report the actual receipt of
over $2,000,000; the entire fund
will vary but little from $3,500,000.
Much of it is in bank, and upon
that, while unexpended, they draw
5 per cent, interest. They are giv
ing aid to 60,000 persons.
The Chicago Post of a recent date
says: “JHte first divorce suit since
the fire has been entered, and we
are once more a city.”
The Columbus, Ga., Fair has
squared all its accounts, and has a
balance of several thousand dollars
to swell the premium list next year.
