THE CUTHBERT APPEAL.
Houle Affairs.
We are pleased to announce
to the order of Good Templars that
Mr. Hickman will preside over
their deliberations to-night, at their
regular meeting, and will be pleased
to initiate all those who may wish
to unite themselves with the order.
We hope there will be a full at
tendance, a-8 an interesting and
pleasant time is anticipated. Sev
eral members will be initiated and
business of importance transacted.
Forgetting this was leap year,
which gives February twenty .nine
days, we dated the out side of our
paper wrong. It should have been
the Ist instead of the 2d.

the change in miud.
The Tempkkance Cause. —As per
announcement in our last, Mr. J. J.
Hickman, of Louisville, Ky., ad
dressed our citizens on Friday night,
also Saturday and Monday nights,
upon the subject of Temperance.
It is seldom our privilege to lis
ten to a more fluent or eloquent
speaker —olre possessing the power
of so completely enchaining the
minds of his auditory—as upon the
above occasion.
Disclaiming any desire or inten
tion of wounding the feelings of
any, and abstainining from personal
ities, harsh epithets of abuse and
ridicule, he would proceed by statis
tical reports tb show-the misery,
want and degradation brought up
on the human family by the curse
of intemperance, and then earnest
ly and eloquently seek to point out
the remedy.
He had no war to make upon the
poor unfortunate man addicted to
strong drink, nor would he turn his
back upon him and cry “ unclean,
unclean,” but sought rather to im
press upon such the fact ‘that he
was their friend, and the Order he
represented their shield and sup
port.
[VVe will here remark that no
words felt form the speaker’s lips
that could be justly construed into
the meaning that he considered the
Order of Good Templars all and
in all, but upon every occasion un
equivocally and unmistakably said :
our duty was to God first, and at all
times, but if we can be instrumen
tal in removing from our land an
evil, which is making wretched so
many of Gou’s creatures, and there
by prepare them for the more no
ble purposes for which they were
created, we should consider it a
work of mercy, and feel that God
Himself approves every honest, ef
fort made for the promotion of the
happiness and condition of His crea
tures. The speaker in no way
sought to place the cause of Tem
perance in advance of the church
in the work of reformation, but
explicitly said the temperance cause
was the stepping-stone to the church,
And the handmaid of Godliness.—
Thus far and no farther.]
He in a forcible manner alluded
to the Jbarriei's formed in the social
and family circle, to the progress of
the great cause he had espoused,
which caused many a parent to con
sider well the results likely to fol
low the examples thus set. Nor
are our fair ladies exempt from such
responsibilities. The social glass
offered and drank in levity and
mirth, may, perchance, turn her cup
of joy and bliss to bittern ess and sor
row.
He was squafely upon the plat
form of total abstinance, and before
he closed his lectures convinced
many that he was right.
As the result df’these addresses
there has been over 100 joined the
order, and many more are to be ini
tiated to night.
The only regfet we have is that
there is not a Hickman in every
county in the land.
Daring Burglary.—On Wednes
day night, between 8 and 10 o’clock,
the storehouse of H. Rosenau, (tbe
New York Store,) was entered from
the rear by thieves and "several
coats; vest, shoes, and a bolt of
jeans carried off.
The parties entered through a
window after cutting away the sash
with a small chisel.
This was a bold and daring un
dertaking, and it behooves our citi
zens to be on tlieir'" guard, as the
success of the thieves in this under
taking will tend to stimulate them
to try it again.

Beauties of Bullock’s Admin
istration. —A correspondent of
the Morning l\e\cs, writing from
Atlanta, makes this statement,
which our' own private advices
would seem to justily;
Very important discoveries were
made on Thursday, touching the
lease of the State Railroad. The
man who stands high in the Ring
“has turned State’s evidence,” as
the saying is.* He swears that
Builock was one of the lessees ; that
he (witness) was to have had one
share, one half of which he was to
carry for Bullock • that this ar
rangement was subsequently chan
ged, and that Kimball took and car
ried the interest for Bullock. If
this be true, way goes the lease.
Other developments were made,
involving, it is reported, a high
functionary under the Federal Gov
ernment. The truth is, people at a
distance can have no idea of the
corruption and fraud that existed
under the Radical Government in
Georgia. It extended everywhere
and into aU,departments of business.
Railroad men, contractors, mer
chants, lawyers, newspaper men,
bankers, legislators, natives, for
eigners, white and black men, with
some socalied Democrats, assisted
in plundering the State and appro
priating the money of the people.
Remarkable Droutii in Virgin
ia. —A correspondent of the Fetres
burg Index writes of a terrible
drouth prevailing in and around
Winchester, while other sections of
the State are suffering from excess
ive snows and rains. There has
not been a general rain or any con
siderable snow for nine months. —
The earth is parched and dry as
powder, and cattle have to be driv
en miles for water. The churches
are praying for rain.
A Girl Shot by Her Brother.
A special dispatch to the Chroni
cle says: At Bowers-town, 0., on
Monday afternoon, a desperate
young man named George Clark,
living at that place, shot his sister
with a rifle because she threw snow
at him. The ball passed through
the girl’s right thighjust below the
hip joint, thence nearly through the
left thigh;
State Agricultural Con

The following resolutions were
unanimously' passed at the Agricul
tural Convention in Savannah, last
week;
Resolved, That the agricultu
rists of Georgia may be regarded.as
-among the fairest and most respect
able exponents of the social, finan
cial, and industrial status of the
State; and, as designing and inter
ested mec, both in this country and
in Europe, have persistently and
from the most selfish motives mis
represented us before the world,
greatly to our detriment; There
fore be it
Resolved, That as far as it may
lie in the power of this Convention,
speaking for our State in its official
and representative character, we
will, in the future, Actively co-oper
ate with' any agency which this
State or the Southern States may
see fit to employ for the purpose of
counteracting this pernicious and
wrongful hostility to our section.
Resolved, That this body favors
and invite immigration ; that it will
uphold peace, good order and up
right administration of the law;
equal justice to all; an untarnished
financial honor for our State; the
payment of every dollar of our just
debts, principal and interest; and
every measure that looks to the en
couragement of the material growth
of the State and its importance in
the roll of commonwealths on the
earth.
Resolved, TS>at this Convention
looks with great favor upon the
proposed mission of Charles Wal
lace Howard to the States of Eu
rope, which mission has for its ex
clusive object such a complete and
authoritative description and his
tory of our State and its society as
shall expose and refute our calum
niators, and hold out to those wil
ling to emigrate the transcendant
inducements which Georgia’s soil,
climate and steples have to offer to
all who will cast their lot among us.
Resolved, That this Society au
thorize its President and Secretary
to prepare such testimonials under
the seal of the Society as shall af
ford Mr. Howard and his mission
the cordial and unreserved endorse
ment of that gentleman and his
work.
Speaking of Bullock’s Cherokee
barn, the Marietta Journal of Fri
day says:
This property, which was adver
tised iu the Journal by tbe Sheriff
of Cherokee county last month to
satisfy a mechanic’s lien, was not
sold, but said lien was about to be
liquidated with greenbacks from
another sourer, when some Atlanta
parties attached the money, which
left our mechanics unpaid. The
real estate was deeded in the name
of Bullock’s father, or some other
Bullock, instead of the original Ru
fus; consequently*, the property
could not be legally sold. Mr.
Geo. D. Sylvester, Bullock’s em
ployee, superintends the farm ancl
carries it on very systematically.
Cincinnati produced 800,000 bar
rels of whisky last year, and sold
them fov $15,000,000.
Old Prejudices are Dying out.— New
(acts are killing them. Tlie idea that inva
lids weakened by disease can be relieved by
prostrating them with destructive drugs, is
no longer entertained except by monomani
acs. Ever since the introduction ot Dr.
Walker’s Vinegar Bitters it has been obvious
that their regulating and invigorating prop
erties are aU-sullieiuut for the cure of chron
ic indigestion, rheumatism, constipation, di
arrhoea, nervous affections, and malarious
fevers, aud tlre.y are now the standard reme
dy for these complaints in every section of
the Union. feb9-4t
“ There was a frog who lived in a spring,
lie caught such a cold that he could not
sing.”
Poor, unfortunate Batrachian ! In what
a sad plight be must have been. And yet
his unfortunate was one that often befalls
singers. Many a once tuneful voice among
those who belong to the “ genus homo” is
uttcily spoiled by “ cold in the head,” or on
the lungs, or both combined. For the above
mentioned “ croaker” we are not aware ihut
any remedy was ever devised ; but w T e re
joice to kuow that all human singers may
keep their heads clear and their throats iu
tune by a timely use ol Dr. Sage’s Catarrh
Remedy, and Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical
Discovery, both of which are sold by drug

A Stable Institution. —Just at the period
when all stable-men where complaining that
the lrorsc-oiutiuents of the day were unstable
remedies, the Mustang Liniment made its
entree in Missouri, without any flourish of
trumpets, aud within one year, became the
favorite embrocation for the external dis
tempers and injuries ot horses and cattle in
all the Western aud Soutneru States. From
that time to this, it has neverer had a rival
in the estimation of accomplished horsemen ;
nor is its household'reputation as a cure for
rheumatism, neuralgia, sore nipples and
caked breasts, tumors, mumps, sore throat,
earache, toothache, bruises burns, wounds
and sprains, a whit behind its celebrity as a
horse Liniment. The Mothers of America
know its value, and apply it promptly to the
external injuries of the “ rising generation,”
and in fact there is not a city or township iu
the United States where the Mustang Lini
ment is not regarded by both sexes and ev
ery class, as a blessing to the community.
What Dyspepsia May End In.—lndiges
tion is not dangerous, Say the faculty. Per
haps not in itself, while it remains meie in
digestion ; but look at the consequences to
which it may lead, aud oiteu does lead when
it beeomes a chronic disease. A spark of fire
is a small thing. A pressure ot the foot will
put it out; a breath will extinguish it. Yet
it may fire a powder mill, or kindle a flame
that will consume a city. In like manner in
digestiob may produce gastritis,- cancer of
the stomach, congestion of the bowels, appo
plexy, liver oisease, aud many oilier danger
ous maladies. Is it not wise, then, to check
it in the germ ? Nothing is more clearly and
iudisputably established than that Hostetter’s
Stomach Bitters will eradicate dyspepsia iu
ail stages. The true policy, however, is to
extinguish it in the first stages with this
wholetome, powerful, aud infallible tonic
and alterative. It is easier to quench a spark
tliau a flame, and it is easier to cure dyspepsia
when it is first developed, than when it has
made headway by neglect, and become com
plicated with other ailments. There is not
the shadow of a doubt that the bitters areas
directly antagonistic to dyspepsia as water is
to fire. There are thousands of cases on rec
ordspfoving this fact. Tile remedy is safe
and agreeable. All the liquors of commerce
prescribed as stimulants leave a stiug behind.
But the sting is taken out of the spirituous
ba>is of this great remedy by Tegetable medi
cation, and, moreover, the Stimulant thus
medicated is of exceptional purity. Os alt
tonics taken as safeguards or remedies for fe
ver and ague, bilious remittents, aud other
epidemics, it is the only one that can uni
formly be depended on.
