if a ready supply of lumber can be

the city.
On Monday next May 13th at

will be conducted by Prof T. L.

Tiie Skating Riuk has been in
full blast for several nights past,
that is if one can judge from some
of the exclamations used by the
unfortunate fullers, and some have

The Rink has been liberally pat

source of amusement to all who
went. “We” are told that even
some of the young ladies could be
heard smiling by persons in the

Dr Powell will soon have an ar

To The Ladies of Cuthbert.—
It becomes the high toned honor
and integrity of the Magnolia (form
erly Eureka) Base Ball Club of Cuth
bert, to say a word in vindication of
our galantry, that has of late been
assailed by some obscene imp, who
is so unprincipled, as to stoop to the
publication of a falsehood. Wo
know not this snake, that lies coiled
beside our pathway, ready, and even
anxious to strike deep the venom of
calumniation ; but it is to be xvish
ed, that ere he sallies forth with an
other false, defamatory report, his
fangs may be snatched from his foul
mouth, and render him harmless to
innocence.
Ladies, it is not strange to say,
that your absence, from our grounds
for the past week or two, has caused
inquiries to be made and upon so
doing it reached our ears with a deep
feeling of regret, that there was a
report in circulation, which grated
harshly upon the modest senses
of every heart that >t reached. This
report is said to have originated in
one of our own members, which is
basely false; for there is. not one
among our band, that would harbor
so ungentiemanly a thought, of the
fair daughters of our city. The
falsity of this charge, made our
hearts rise in indignation, upon this
malicious fiend, and send forth the
expressions of this article.
Hoping that the salaciousness of
this rumor is clearly set forth, \ve
again ask you to honor us with the
inspiration of your presence and
beauty upon our grounds. So come,
and Come all; for, to us, it is a
source of pr de and pleasure that
•cannot be substituted.

friendly declaration of independanel)
Great cries for the “question” over

with loud and continued cheering.
The chair announced the vote

Gratz Brown here took the stand
and thanked his friends for their
support of him, but withdrew his
name, and asked his friends to sup

with many persistent hisses.) The
Chair arose to announce the vote,
when a Missouri delegate rose to a '
question of privilege and asked to
change his vote. Considerable dis
cussion ’ensued, various delegations
askingto change their votes, and con- ]

Kentucky’s vote changed, five from i

and asked leave for the Pennsylva

reporters to hear. Apparently
Greeiy was nominated
McClure changed Pennsylvania
to 50 for Greeiy, and 6 for Davie.
[Great cheering.]
Idiana changed to 27 for Adams.
A tampede of changes to Greeiy

BY ESPRIT FORT.
Oiir good people are entitled to
all the pleasure they can derive
from pets; whether they be birds,
cats, dogs, large or small—provided
they do not make them an annoy
ance to other people—Now Mr. A.
has been accustomed to have Tip
or Nero, aroond him at home, at
his store or office, and the presence
of his noble and faithful companion,
by no means disturbs him in his de
votions in the sanctuary. Mrs. B.
has great pleasure at home in hav
ing Ponts or Fido fill up the tedi
um of her husbands absence by be
ing around her feet. But it has
not occurred to her, that there are
other ladies and gentlemen to whom
the peculiar excellencies of Ponto
or Fido are not known; or who,
from difference in raising or educa
tion, or habits, do not love the ca
nine species as dearly as she does;
and to whom the intimacies of her
pet at church are exx-eedinglv disa
greeable, yes I may speak from per
sonal experience, and say, who have
a disposition to apply the too of the
boot to his dogship with such force,
as woul insuro him to resume the
proper place for dogs out of doors,
and one only restrained from doing
so by politeness to the owners.—
Some people are afraid they will
bite. Some don’t like to have the
fleas scratched off under their cloth
ing, some don’t like the odor, and
others dont like the looks. Ij fact
from one cause or another, a very
large majority of people think the
sanctuary during divine service, is
no place for these animals, and that
it is not an unreasonable request
that the owners.should demy them
selves for the nonce, and leave these
precious creatures to their devo
tions at home even if it has to be
done at the cost of a collar and
chain.
It may be that tiie owners of pet
dogs, will not appreciate my apathy,
and think I am disposed to be un
duly senSorious. But let us reason
tiie case a little, upon the* old saw
“ every man to his taste.” Now
some of the good, people take to
dogs as the natural enemy to cats,
because they hate cats. But I have
a friend who is perfectly devoted
to cats—she .thinks as much of
Fup and Tom, as Mr. B. does
ol I’onto and Fido. Suppose
»ext Sunday, Pup and Tom should
march down the aisle just as the
preacher was opening his discourse,
following my friend to her pew;
and then salleyiug forth and cultiva
ting the acquaintance of all the la
dies sitting near by getting on their
laps and performing all their love
ly tricks in the presence of the
congregation. Dont you think the
owner of Ponto aud Fido would be
disgusted, and ready to exclaim,
“ The church is no place for cats : ”
Then suppose, and it is by no means
an improbible supposition, that Tom
and Ponto, invading .each others do
minions in the aisle or pews, should
get up a quarrel. But it is no use
talking we all vote for cats to stay
at home.
But I have another friend of
vety peculiar taste, vsho has'several
pet pigs. And it would astonish
you to see how they love him and
follow him about. Now tell me if
you can, why a hog is not as good
as a dog—and why it would not be
admissible their young hogsbips to
be rooting and grunting about over
the church floor while the owner
who is perfectly used to them is
performing his devotions;
But I have another f fiend who
has a pet bear. Bruin is perfectly
harmless—my friend has all confi
dence in him—knows he wont bite ;
and could listen to a sermon or song
of Zion with perfect composure
with brum by his side. Why not?
He wont bite aud there is no dan
ger in him. But how many people
know that? How many are wil
ling to trust themselves near such
an animal ? You tell me that Hec
tor or Tige or Nero wont bite, but
how do I know ; you may be safe,
and I very unsafe in their savage
presence. And you are uninten
tionally guilty of interfering with
the perfect order of the sanctuary
when you bring your dogs, cats,
hogs, bears or anything else into it,
and thereby put me in fear, or ex
cite in me feelings’ of disgust, or
divert me from the solemnities of
the service.
I have thrown in this short arti
cle upon the subject of dogs and
ask pardon for it as entirely out
of the line of remarks intended, aud
which are by this defered.

Plantation Bitters was introduced tt> the
world. It was a success from the beginning.
All that was claimed lor it as a tonic, a cor

found to be strictly true. Within five years
the annual sales of this article amounted to
One Million of Bottles. A few year? more

The annual consumptiou of the bitters has

How Wic Used to bk Physicked. —Who
does not remember the time when apting
purgation was considered indispensable to
summer health ? No matter for wry faces,
the inevitable salt* and senna, rhubarb, or
calomel and jalap, must be administered.
These “spring medicines” the youugsters
were told, were to keep them llale aud hearty
during tlre summer. We all know that this
was a salary ; that new vigor, not depletion,
is what is required at the eommenc ineut of
the summer solistiee. Asa preparation for
the enervating effects of oppressive summer
weather, a course of Ilostetter’s Stomach
Bitter? is highly expedient. This inmous
vegetable preparation has three prominent
properties ; It renovates, purifier, and regu
lutes all tiie functions of tiie body. It is com
posed exclusively of pure vegetable produc
tion?, viz; the essential principle of Monon
gahela live, and the most efficacious tonic
atsd alterative roots, harks, and gums known ‘
to medical botanists. Hence, it is an absolute
ly safe medicine, and no tiuctnre of the Pliar
macopcela ran compare wiili it either in puri
ty, or in the variety of its objects, and its
comprehensive results. Happily for man
kind, the theory that it was necessary to pros
trate a patient in order to cure him, is forever
exploaed, and the tiue philosophical doctrine,
that vigor is the great antagonist of disease,
has taken its place. Hostetter’s Bitters is an
invigorant, and hence it is the proper Midi
cine for the feeble at tills most trying season
of the year.
