THE CUTHBERT APPEAL
Home Aflhirs.
We regret that we were unable
to ge out at all during the Match
Game of Base Ball on Wednesday
last. We are ’indebted to our
friend T. J. P. for the account of
the game which appears in onr col
umns to day.
Singular Accident.— Mr. G. C.
Bancroft was engaged in a game of
base ball on Tuesday last.
ITc tin e w tho ball to the Ist
baseman, only a short distance, and,
feeling considerable pain in bis arm,
supposed that be had simply sprain
ed or thrown it out of joint, but
upon examination it was found that
the bone, about half way between
the elbow and shoulder, was broken
entirely into. Tluj breaking was
causeed simply b’> r the jerk of the
throw. Avery singular case.

Building and’ Loan Associa
tion.—A public meeting of our cit
izens was held, in the Court House,
on Saturday last, to discuss the fea
sibility of organizing a Building
and Lean Association.
Mr. A. A. Walker, the Secreta
ry and Treasure;’ of a like institu
tion in Etifaula, was introduced,
who, in a plain and straight for
ward, mariner, gave us the practical
workings of the association. He is
well versed in all its details; and we
were glad to have him with us.—
Ho was followed by our townsman,
Col. Flewellen, who, in a glowing
speech, endorsed all that bad been
said by Mr. Walker, and pictured
in bright colors the happy lcsults
the association would produce in
our midst.
Between three and four hundred
shares have been taken. We trust
tiie good work will go on, until the
requisite number, one thousand,
have been subscribed for.
We consider it one of the best in
stitutions of the ago and especially
adapted to the wants of Culhbcrt
and vicinity. It is a good thing
for the moneyed man; being one of
the safest investments for his money,
paying him a large per cent, with
out any risk.
It is a good thing for the poor
man; enabling him to build a home,
and, in the course of a few years,
to men it, paying out no more,
monthly, than he now pays, for
rent. In short, it is a good thing
for the community, at large, as it
will do more, Than anything else,
with so small an investment on the
part of the share ladders, to build
up our town and increase the value
of its property.
llaWe Ball Festival.
Hundreds and wc might say al
most a thousand spectators were
present Wednesday {he 28th hiSI, to
witness the decisive Match Game
of Base Ball between the Independ
cuts of Montezuma aud Magnolias ol
Culhbert. The game was called at
So’eloek A. M. Four innings were
played in the morning—game clo
sing for dinner- with the following
score. Magnolias 23. Independents
20. Quito a number of visitors from
Etifaula, Ft. Gaines, Georgetown,
Dawson, Mo itezmna and Ogle
tliropo weye in attendance to enjoy
the amusements of the day and to par
take of the hospitality warm hearted
eitizensot Cuthbert. The noble ladies
of our town were on hand with bas
kets teeming y. ith every delicacy that
heart could wislqto grace the occasion
with their presence, and together
with many visiting beauties to en
liven the scene with their radiant
smiles. The collation was com
plete and we might say incomprehen
sive in point of quantity, quality
and delicacy. All Were made wel
come, and trust none went away
dissatisfied. At 4 o’clock P. M. the
game was called to play the concltr
ding 5 innings. At tliis time anxie
ty, hope and fear, was ebb and flow
with the friends of the respective
Nines. The Ist inning in the after
noon each club scored 1. The 2nd
inning Independents, V, Magnolias
5. At this time the Magnolias had
only 1 the advantage. The excite
ment now was intense. The 3rd
inning Independents 1, Magnolias T-.
(Magnolia stock advanced). 4th in
ning 2 each. The Independents
came to the bat on the last inning.
Now came the tug of war. Capt. Al
lison deployed his men to the field
and'admonished them not to let a
single ball pass. Nor did a ball
pass, the side was pill out without
making the Ist base, scoring a
white wash. Magnolias at. the bat

delivered the ball of the Independ
ents which was received by Judge
W. 1). Kiddoo in behalf of the
Magnolias. After which Col. Fiel
der presented a banner awarded
Mr. S. 11. Gamble for being the
most proficient player in the Mag-,
nolia club. The speeches were all
spicy and to the point and were
received with commendable eclat. —
Thus ended a very interesting and
most warmly contested game of
Base Ball. Great enthusiasm atten
ded the game from first to last.—
The vast concourse of spectators
began to disperse, but not without
being invited to attend the “ Mag
nolia and Independent Base 81.11
IIop” at l*owell’s Hall at night. It
is needless to say, the llop was a
grand success and proved a happy
auxiliary to the pleasures of the
day. This was the second delight
ful reunion of the Magnolias and
Independents which will ever be a
bright oasis to revert to, for many
years to conic. And wherever the
Independents go, or wherever they
rnay be, lot them be assured that
they have in our people, true aud
wurm’hearted friends.

“ The Life of the Flesh is the Blood,”
—This being the fact, it is very obvious
that when the blood becomes corrupted the
whole system becomes corrupt also. To re
lievo this, the tVue policy undoubtedly is to
direct the remedy to the sourcy 61 disease
It is in this manner that Dr. Tutt’s Sarsapa
rilla and Queen's Delight acts. Its specific
eik’Ct is on the blood ; it purifies it. vitalizes
it. and expels all distimper from tbe systeip.
Being free from violent Minerals, it is
adapted to general use. Tbe old and young
may use it; tbe most delicate female, at any
time, may take it: the week and enfeebled
will be strcugEhened by it; tbe tender infant,
who may have inherited disease, will be
cured by it.
For Syphilis, and all its trains of evils, it
is a sure antidote.

from, and includes a variety of ailments. The
liver is more or le6s affected, the bowels are
either constipated or too much relaxed, the
stomath but half performs the work ol di

debility. It is a general disarrangement of all
the physical functions, and requires asa rem.

Hosteller's Stomach Bitter? is specially ad

is not confined to a single organ. If ihe liver

CONFEDERATE MONUMENT.
To the People of Georgia and
the South*
Office _ of the
Confederate Moimmental Association
of Georgia,
Augusta , Ga., Bane, iS'72.
WE Jec'm >t proper to appeal directly to
onr fellow-citizens for their Substan
tial aid in honoring otir fallen Confederates,
aud benolittiug those \\ ho were dependent tip
on them for maintenance and pidtection. No
one, we feel assured, will deem it intrusive in
us to do so. The cause commends itself to tiie
patriotic sentiment of all otir citizens. It
■brings ireshly to our minds tiie sad but cliival
ric story of our noble sons fighting for man’s
most sacred rights—country, honor, liberty
and home.
We cannot, as far as we can se , shed the
light of our work upon the impenetrable
gloom of ilie grave. The spirits of our lost
Confederates may see us or not; but our in
stincts fiiake us weep and grieve when death
steals silently into our households aud takes
our loved ones away. We honor them in (heir
graves, and inscribe their virtues upon Mon
uments. Out spirits and senses become im
bued with I lie solemnities of deatli and our
irreparable loss.
Thus we feel when they fade and die of or
dinary causes. .Shall we feel the less when
taking no heed of.danger, courting it indeed
in full health and manhood —they meet the en
emies of their die in tiie effort to
save their people from the oppressor’s wrong.
We still rise with the sun, pursue our call
ings, enjoy life, and are blessed by a merciful
Providence. They are in the gloom of llioil
graves, having done for us ail they could in
this lower world. Are they not entitled to
our pity, onr love, and all the care we Can
take of their fame ? Will it not be something
to ex'nioit this to the world? Will we not
respect and honor ourselves iu doing it 7 Is it
not necessary to present tliis evidence of re
spect and gratitude to the eyes and thoughts
oftheyonug? What will the world say if
we shall fail to do it ?
Some will not contribute —their motives
are their own; all cannot, but onr prosper
ous Merchants,.Lawyers, Physicians, Plan
ters, and thousands of otheis Who are well-to
do iu worldly affairs, will feel hotter when
they shall all have aided iu tliis work of
love And gratitude. All tlic followers of the
Arabian Propiiet cannot visit bis tomb, but
the grem tinbaneefc Pilgrims who can, are
held in higher esteem when they return from
Mecca. A-d w* I not those be honored who
shall aid hi inis tribute to those who fell in
our service and our cause ? Who is there
that would not lie pleased to have his name
inscribed upon the list that will lie on perpet
ual record in the archives of the Confederate
Monumental Association '! Will it not be
emphatically a Roll of Honor ?
All of us Will soon sleep without a dream.
Who can bear the thought that no one will
care for or respect his memory when he is
gone ?
The fame of the gallant Confederate dead is
in the care and keeping of -all our people.—
What would be thought of him who would
sny: “I .et them sleep uncared for, ‘uuhon
ored and unsung ’ ” State. Southern and
personal pride would abhor ihe sentiment.
AS moitaie, onr brave Confederates have
perished; ds oursdgfendeis, honor, gratitude
a«d duty call upon-ns to protect their fame
and cherish their memories forever.
We have received but tew contributions.
