Dried ipple Pies.
1 loathel abhor! detest! despise!
-AUmiinate dried apple pies ;
I like good bread. I like good meat,
Or anything that’s fit to eat,
But of all the grub beneath the skies.
The poorest is dried apple pies.
(Jive me a toothache or sore eyes
In preference to Mich kind of pies.
•
The farmer takes his gnarliest fruit,
•Tie wot my. bitter and hard to boot.;
They leave the hull to make us cough,
And don’t take half the peeling off.
Then on a dirty cold they’re strung,
And from some chamber window hung ;
And there they serve a roost for flies
Lntfl they're ready to be made Into pies.
Tread on my corns, or tell me lies,
But don’t pass m dried apple pies.
An Ingenious Instrument.
JDroz, a tnechnnie of Geneva,
produced a clock which excelled all
others in ingenuity. On it were
seated a negro, a shepherd and a
dog. When the clock struck, the
shepherd played six tunes on his
flute, niid the dog approached and
fawned upon him. This wonder
ful machine was exhibited to the
King of Spain, who was greatly de
lighted with it. *
The gentleness of mj T dog,”
fiiittDfoz, “is his least merit. If
your Mnjcsty touch one of the ap
ples which you sue in the shep
herd’s basket, you will admire the
animal’s fidelity.”
The King took an apple, and the
dog flew at liis hand barking so
loud that the King’s dpg, which
was In the room, began to bark al
so. At this the courtiers, not
doubting that it was an affair of
witchcraft, hastily left the room,
crossing themselves as they depart
ed; Having desired the Minister of
Marine (the only one who ventured
to remain) to ask the negro what
o’clock it was, the Minister did so,
but obtained no reply. Droz then
observed that the negro had not
yet learned Spanish, upon which
the question was repeated in French,
when the black immediately an
swered him. At this prodigy the
firmness of the Minister also for
sook him, and be retreated precipi
tately, declaring that it must be the
work of a supernatural being.
Cumois and Scientific.—the
Dead Sea. —Being without an out
let, evaporation is the only escape
of the water pouring into it by the
river Jordan and* some other
streams. Each brings into that ex
traordinary reservoir, which is a
depression in the earth’s crust thin
teen hundred foot below the water
level of the Medclerranean, an im
mense mass of materials, which
must eventually fil! it up, when the
Jordan will then run on beyond
and find an outlet to the sea, if the
world remains in its present physi
cal form long enough. The Jordan
wafts down ninety cubic yards of
water every second. Each day it
carries in six and a half bushels of
nalt,- liberated from rocks, on its
passage, in each ninety cubic yards.
Therefore that dreadfully salt, bit
ter reservoir has nearly readied the
point of saturation. When no more
salt can be dissolved, then it will
accumulate on the irregular bottom
till it reaches quite near the present
surface. Its feature will have
quite as much interest for coining
ages as its past history.
Pious Impulses in a Squall.—
By a squall in Delaware Bay last
week, while sailing in yacht, two
young men were overtaken. At
Nazareth Church, on Twelfth street,
Philadelphia, at public worship they
had occasionally been present.—
From the way things looked, the
capsizing of their shallop was very
nearly inevitable.
“ ‘ Bill,” said one to the other,
‘ this is serious business ; can you
pray ?’
* No, I can’t; I’ve heard Joe
Quinn do it, and I’ve listened to
Bill Post; but I can’t do it myself.’
‘ Well, you can sing a hymn,
can’t you ? For God’s * sake do
something.’
<No I can’t sing here. How can
I siftg when this boat at any mo
ment may drown us both ?’
* Well, we must do something re
ligious. If you can’t pray and
can’t singjet’s take up a collection.’
To this Bill consented. In his
companion’s hat he deposited thir
teen pennies, a corkscrew and a
brokcn-bladed knife. As he did
this the wind lulled and the shallop
made a successful landing.
Fun at Home.— Don’s be afraid
•
of a little fun at home, good people.
Don’t shut up your house lest the
sun should fade your carpets ; and
your hearty laugh should shake
down some of the musty old cob
webs there. If you want to ruin
your sons, let them think that all
mirth and social enjoyment must
bo left on the threshold without,
when they come home at night.—
When once a home is regarded as a
place only to eat, drink and steep
in, the work is begun that ends in
gambling houses and reckless deg-

FOR 1872.
TELEGRAPH&JESSENGER
The campaign for 1872 will be a
gigantic and convulsive struggle*—
Nothing like it has been seen since
1840, and in the momentous and
fundamental character of the issues
involved, we trust nothing like it
need occur again in the history of
the United States. We hope it
will result in the re-establishment
of the great foundation principles
of civil and personal freedom, and
its time-honored muniments—of the
local independence of the Slates—
of the freedom of the ballot —of
the impartiality of public justice—■
of the integrity of Executive ad
ministration—of the inviolability of
the habeas corpus—of the triumph
of law and the Constitution—and
in the complete victory of peace,
conciliation, national harmony and
tranquility over the demon of dis
cord, usurpation, tyranny, hatred,
and the great moral and sectional
war proclaimed by Grant, Morton
and Butler.
lii Georgia, however it may be
elsewhere, the result of this contest
is not at all problematical; but an
intense and overwhelming interest
will nevertheless be felt in its pro
