THE CUTHBERT APPEAL
Home Affairs.
Open for the Season—fall
and campaign fights—first one came
off yesterday. Result: Some blood
and considerable thunder expended,
and our city treasury replenished.
A Suggestion. —As next Wednes
day is the day of election, would
it not be a good idea for the busi
ness houses to close, say from 9 to
4 o’clock, and all hands turn out to
work for the success of our nomi
nees and party? Our opponents
are well organized—they having
had nothing else to do but meet in
caucus by night and day—and it
will require some exertion on thfe
part of our citizens to defeat them.
One day we think could be well
and profitably spent in the cailse
of Democracy and honest govern
ment, and should not be overlooked.
We were truly surprised and
delighted when we beheld the su
perb and elegant manner in which
carriages, buggies, harness, etc.,
are fixed up at the repository of
Mr. A. S. F. Mcßride. We nev
er saw colors more smoothly and
fancifully arranged than upon some
of his vahicles.
Young men who wish to “drive
in style” should at once get one of
Mr. Mcßride’s buggies or have
their old ones hauled down and re
juvenated beneath the magic of his
touch;
gy Store your Cotton at the

and can act accordingly.
Messrs. L. F. Johnston & Cos., are
doing a heavy business with the
Georgians, but not mor? than they
deserve. We commend them as
worthy the patronage of the whole
people.
Personal —We were favored,
on Wednesday last, with a call
from C. J. Trowbridge, Agent of
the ISoatb and North Ala., K. R.,
which has just been er.mpleted be
tween Montgomery to Decatur.
The completion of this road will
greatly benefit middle and all South,
ern Ala., and Florida, as it materi
ally shortens the line of transpor
tation for western produce, besides
giving a more direct line- ot travel
North and West.
On the 29th inst., an excursion
train will*"leave Montgomery on
this road, for Louisville, Nashville,
and Cincinnati.
Round trip tickets $20,00 and

The PkemiuM Watermelon.—
The largest watermelon brought in
the the past season, and “ entered
for the prize” was presented by
Jno. R. West, of this county, and
weighed 43 lbs., which entitles him
to the Appeal and Rural Southern
er for one year. The next prize—
the Appeal for one year,* —was ta
ken by Rev. John West, with
one weighing 39 lbs., and the third
prize—the Appeal for 6 months—
was taken by W. 11. Phillips, of
Morris Station, with a 364 pound
melon;
There were several “entries” in
this “ fair,” and we only regret they
could hot all get a prize.
Thofortunare ones will leave their
address at our office, so that the pa
pers may be forwarded as desired.
On Time.—Our enterprising mer
chants'—Messrs. Owen &Sealy—are
ever on time in l the receipt of their
new goods, and never fail in select
ing a stock that fully meets the
wants ol the public. Mr. Owen
has returned from New York,
where he purchased his accustom
ed stock of everything needed in
the way of dry goods, groceries
and hardware, and they have been
received and put in order, and
marked at such reasonable figures
that his corpse of efficient clerks
will have no trouble in disposing of
them.
Call and examine his Beautiful as

please you.
Our Male School Again. —lt
should be borne in mind that our
male academy opens on Tuesday
next. This will be an event in the
history of our town long and anx
iously looked for by fnany, and it
has been brought about at great
expense to our town as well as pri
vate individuals. We hope to see
a proper appreciation of this expen
diture in the presence of a large
number of our hoys and young men
on the first day.
The building is ready, and an
able and competent Professor has
been chosen to preside over the
school, and we are confident in the
belief that it will prosper under his
care.
As we go to press, we lean that
the Principal, John H. Seales, has
arrived in our midst, and will sure
ly entdr upon hjs labors on Tuesday
morning next. Let there be a full
attendance on first day.
i The Mass Meeting.—Wednes
day last our town was thronged
With visitors from this and sur
rounding counties to hear the
speeches to be made by some of the
ablest and most distinguished ora*
tors of the State.
At about 11 o’clock the crowd
began to assemble at the court
house square, but before the speak
ers took fc.lie stand it began to rain,
and the crowd adjourned to Pow
ell’s Hall, where for more than four
hours they were charmed with and
feasted upon the eloquence of Col.
Tbos. Hardeman, of Macon, Dr. H.
Y. M. Miller, of Atlanta, and Gen.
G. J. Wright, our candidate for
Congress from this District.
Each one of the speakers fully
sustained his reputation for oratory
and logical reasoning, and from the
length of time the large assembly
was held, and the attention given,
we are confident their arguments
were well received, and that much
good will result from them.
At night the hall was again
crowded, by ladies and gentlemen
to hear Col. Pugh, of Ala., who,
we are told, completely demolished
the barriers on which our “straight”
friends so complacently recline,
and earnestly labored to show them
the inconsistency of their acts. His
talk to the negroes was. plain and
compiehensive, and we have al
ready heard more than one say
“that man has sense, and as he don’t
want any office, I believe he tells
tbe truth, and I will vote the way
be says.” They are coming to their
senses, and when they learn to take
the advice of honest white men,
who do not seek to mislead them
for party purposes and individual
aims, they will fare better.
Cotton 15 to lGi cents.
The TerHeli, County Fair.—We
would call attention to the card of
the fair of the Terrell County Indus
trial Association which comes off
next month. This will be the second
held by that body in Dawson.
The directors and members are
sparing ho effort that will lead to
the success of the enterprise, and
render it an affair worthy of South
West Georgia, as may be seen in
their card. Orators of the highest
ability will address the people upon
the most interesting subjects. Nu
merous prizes will be offered for
achievements in Agriculture, Man
ufactures, Stock raising. The fine
Arts will also, be represented.
The spirit of enterprise and pro
gress evinced by these exhibitions
cannot be to much commended.
Riddle, tiie Artist. —Those who
have not patronized this distinguish
ed Photographer, should do so at
once, as he remains but one more
week, and such a chance may not,
in many years, be offered again.—
Our citizens have had enough of
cheap, worthless pictures—that, in
reality, are not worth 50 cents a
dozen—and now is their time to
have good ones, equal to the best
in the United States, and right,at
their own doors. Will they have
them, or will they let the opportuni
ty pass ?
Failed to See it. —One day last
week a match game of base ball
was played at Buford, in this boun
ty, and our “independent” friends
thinking this an excellent opportu
nity to press their claims (?) upon
the voters of this section, were
promptly on hand. At the conclu
sion of the game they were chosen
by the clubs as spokesmen to pre
sent and receive the ball,, which
was done in a characteristic style,
and not without “ring”-ing in poli
tics, and appealing to their hearers
to renounce the action of our coun
ty convention, which they asserted
was the result of “rings and fraud.”
Our friends of the sth district fail
ed to see it in that light, as will be
seen by their report of the proceed
ings.
Died. —As we passed Americus
on Sunday last, we were pained to
learned of the sudden death of Mrs.
Mark Anthony, daughter of J.
A. Fort of Stewart' county.—
The deceased was beloved by all
who knew her, and leaves a large
circles of relatives and friends in
this place to mourn her loss.
Agricultural Meeting. —We
have been requested by some of
our friends to announce that there
will be a meeting of the County
Agricultural Society on Saturday
the sth of next month at the court
house in Cuthbert.
We hope to see a full attend
ance on the part of the planters,
and a general exchange of views
aud theories on this occasion. *

Buford, Ga., Sept. 24,51572.
Editor Appeal: —You will please
allow me space in your columns to
give the result of a match gatne,
played between the Buford and Pa
chitla Base Ball Club, —the latter
being the challenging party.
The game was called at 81 o’clock
last Saturday, A. M., on the play
gi-ound of the Buford Club, and the
Ist nines were promptly on the
ground, together with a large crowd
of spectators. After selecting
Mr. Cbas. Tondee umpire, and
Messrs. J. S. <fc J. W. Burney
scorers, the game began and every
one present must have concluded
that the boys were doing their heav
iest, but after playing five innings
the Bufdrti boys found themselves
24 runs ahead. During recess a
most excellent dinner was spread
upon the “ground” by the kind la
dies of tbe neighborhood, when all
were called topartake—none could
be found that had time to score,
but were busy catching “fowls”
and other good things too numer
ous to mention. I would say howev
er that ample justice was done to
this part of the game, and as of
old, “ twelve baskets full were left
after feeding the multitude.”
At 2 o’clock the game was called,
and the Pacliitlas’ appeared to do
better. Bufords’ seeing that “some
thing must be did,” put too, and
soon changed their luck, so much
so that 98 to 49 runs crowned their
success, and the Pachitins not hav
ing a ball, weTe culled on td buy a
new one. The Clubs secured «Mr.
T. R. Stewart to present and Mr.
Henry Hays to accept the Ball, with
short speeches, which they post
scriped with a ticket for legislators,
but the boys knew moiv. about bat
ting, flies and fowls, than they did
about “ the frauds and rings in the
nominating convention,” besides
they like the nominees very well
and accept the ism.

Vai.uaiilz Hints. —A regular lia'-it of
body is absolutely essential to physical litalth
and dearness of lutelifcct. Nor is this all.—
Beauty of person cannot Co-exist with an Un
natural condition of the bowels. A free pas
sage of the refuse matter ot tbe system
through these natural waste pipes, is as nec
essary to the purity of the body a- the free
passage of the offal of a city through its sew
ers is necessary to the health of its inhabi
tants.
Indigestion is the primary cause of most of
the diseases of the discharging organs, and
one of its most common results is consiipa
tion. This complaint, besides being danger
ous in itself, has many disagreeable concomi
tants—such as an unpleasant breath, a sallbw
skin, contaminating blood and bile, ht-uior
ages, headache, loss of memory, and gener
al debility.
Hostetler's Stomach Bitters removes all
these evils by removing ali their immediate
cause in the digestive organs; and regulating
the action of the intestines. The combina
tion of properties in this celebrated prepara
tion is one of its chief merits. It is lib mere
ly a stimulant or a tonic, or an antibilious
agent, or a nervine, or a blood depurent, or
a cathartic, lint all these cuiative elements
blended in one powerful testora
tive. It lends activity and vigor to the in
ertaud enervated stomach, relieves vu
mentary eauai of its obstructions, and gives
tone to the membrane which lines it, gently
stimulates the liver, braces the nerves, and.
cheers the animal spirits. No. other remedy
possesses such ft variety of hygienic virtues
It is to these Characteristic virtu s that it
owes its prestige as a household medicine.—
Expferience has proved that it is as harmless
as it is efficacious, and hence it is as popular
with the weaker sex as with the stronger.
Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters are sold in bot
tles only, and the trade mark blown in the
glass and engraved on the label is the test of
geuumeness. Beware of counterfeits.

A magnificent 14 x 18 inch Engraving, rep
resenting the death-scene of Gen. Jackson.—
The officers are grouped sorrowfully around
his death-bed. In the distance is to be seen
the encamping army, the weary sentinel on
his bout,, and in my other things which make
this picture a gem of art; one which should

CERTIFICATES.
Matron, Georgia, April 9 th, 1872.
We, the. Undersigned, have this day examined the practical working of
LaillQn’s Horse Power, and are so well pleased, that we feet no
hesitation in asserting that its Mechanical Arrangement is such as to ob
viate most of the defects so very comrpon to other Powers,, and we feel
that it is destined to supply a want long felt and saught after; viz.: a
Simple, Durable and Efficient Machine, with less Fimction, and free
from the liability of breakage by sudden jerks. We witnessed a 45-saw
Gin driven by it, with two interior mules, doing good work, with saw®
full depth, and a full roll.
