Office of the
Confederate Monumental Association
of Georgia,
Avgusta, G-a., Puna, 1872.
WE deem it proper to appeal directly to
oor us for theii substan
tial aid in honoring our fallen Confederates,
and be'nafitung those who were dependent up
on them for maintenance and piotectiou. No
one, we feel assured, wiil ileeut it intrusive in
us to do so. The cause commends itself to tlie
patriotic sentiment of all oar citizens. It
brings Ireehly to our minds the sad bin chival
rie story of our noble sons fightnig for maids
most sacred l ights—epuntry, honor, liberty
and home.
We cannot, as far as we can see, shed the
light of our work upon the impenetrable
gloom of the grave. The-spirits nl onr lost
Confederates may see us or not; but onr in
stincts make us weep and grieve when death
steals silently into our households and takes
out loved ones away. We honorthemiu their
graves, and inscribe llncir virtues upon M«-
n meats. Onr spirits artd senses become im
bued with the solemnities of death and our
irreparable loss.
Tims we feel When tlaey fade and die of or
dinary causes. Shall we feel the less when
taking no heed of danger, epurting it iudeed
in lull health ana mahhood—they meet tlie en
emies of their country and die-in the effort to
save their people from the oppressor’s wrong
We still rise with the 6un, pursne our call
ings, enjoy life, and are blessed by a m-rciful
Providence. They are in the gloom of then
graves, having done for us ail they could in
this lower world. Are they not entitled to
Our pity, onr love, and all the care we can
take of their lame ? Will it not he something
to exhibit this to the world I Will we. not
respect and honor ourselves iu doing it f Is it
not necessary to present this evidence of re
spect and gratitmte to the eyes aud thoughts
ot the young 1 What will the world say it
we shall fail to do it ?
Some will not contribuje—their motives
are their own; all cannot, but our prosper
ous Merchants, Lawyers, Physicians, Plan
ters, and thousands of ot life is who are welUto
do iu worldly affairs, will feel better when
they shall* all have aided in this work of
love and gratitade. All the followers of the
Arabian Prophet cannot visit his tomb, but
the green-turbaued Pilgrims who can, are
held iu higher esteem when they return from
Mecca. And will not those be honored who
shall aid in this tribute to those who fell in
,our. service and our cause? Who is there
that would not he pidased to have his name
inscribed upon the list Unit will be on perpet
ual record in the archives of tiie Confedei ate
Monumental Association ? Will it not be
emphatically a Roll of Honor ?
All of us will soon sleep without a dream.
Who can bear the thought that no one will
care for or respect his memory wltcu he is
gone ?
The fame of the gallhnt Confederate dead is
in the care aud Weeping of all our people.—
What would be thought of him who would
say ; “ Let them sleep uncared for. ‘unhon
ored and unsu,ug ’” State, Southern'aud
personal pride would abhor the sentiment.
As mortals, onr brave Confederates have
perished; as our defenders, honor, gratitude
and duty call upon us to protect their fame
and cherish their memories forever.
