How .Homy is }l»de bv
Farming
Much labor is done on farms that
is not farming id the true sense.
By such labor no money is ever
3nade. A man may support himself
'rind family, keep out of debt, and
uiave a*few dollars in his pocket by
{practicing the most stringent econ
omy. If lie is otherwise than in
•duslrious and sober, he is on tlie
Mown grade with loose breaks, and
■the end is soon reached. But farm
ing, in its true sense, is a profes
sion, equal to that of law or medi
cine, and needs equal study, mental
capae ty, and intelligently directed
labor to command success in it.
The principles which underlie the
practice of the true farmer must be
well understood, and a steady, con
sistent course of operations must be
followed. Having thoroughly the
nature and capacity of the soil he
possesses, and chooses the rotation
most suitable, and the stock most
profitably kept on it, he does not
swerve from his chosen course, but
dn good markets and bad, raises his
regular crops, and keeps his land in
regular increasing fertility. No
special cry tempts or affrights him.
Jle does not talk dairying this sea
son or crops the.next, but doubt
less, if any particular product be in
demand and bring a good price,
he lias some of U to sell and reaps
a share of the advantages.
He saves as much money as some
men make by care and economy in
purchasing and preserving tools,
■ seeds, manures and machines, and
diis business habits and Constant
.readiness for all occasions give him
'seasonable security against the ef
fects of adverse seasons and bad
weather.
Always prepared, he. is never too
late,*ii(l always calm, he is never
•too soon, and thus, “"taking time
Py the forelock,” he has the stern
old tyrant at' his command, and
turns him at his will. 'He has no
■losses and his gains are steady.
