Herbert Fielder and (he
/Senator’s Election Again.
-No-subject has arisen on which
the press, and press correspondents
have shown more interest and less
harmony than this, There is evi
dently a strong feeling—honora
ble in itself, and common to all
•bravo and martial people, such as
wave of the South have ever been,
that prompts men to loose sight of
2lhe aims and objects they have in
■view, in-order to honor men whose
gallantry has honored them.—
Those who yield to this feeling, are
divided between two noble and
true men—Gen. Benning and Gen.
/Gordon.
There is also a feeling that par
takes in part of gratitude, friend
ship, fogy ism, and the fear and
•timidity of changes, that prompts
•many to adhere, not only to dead
issues, but to old party leaders. —
'They can scarcely be induced to
think, that there is any political
wisdom in this country, outside of
Benj. 11. Hill, Alexander H. Ste
phens, Hershel V. Johnson, and a
few others. We have no quarrel
with either of these classes which
reflects upon their fidelity or patri-
•otiswa. There is another class, nu
merous already, awd rapidly increas
ing, who think tho war is ended ;
that seven years after tho battle, is
long enough to have buried the po
litical dead ; that sending men into
the Senate to debate dead issues, is
a hopeless business, as well as that
of sending men there among the
Senators of the North, to represent
our interest, whose claim to the
honor, arises from military achieve
ments against the people of the
North. Tliat it is time to consider
•what it costs to keep up sectional
strife and hatred—to honor heroes
and old leaders —what is the ten
dency and ultimato result of the
sectional warfare that is being waged
upon us ; that.our true mission as
a people now, is not to resent
wrongs that are without remedy,
nurse wrath that is not only harm'
less, but actual beneficial to our en
emies—aye, their chief stock in po
litical trade —but to promote peace
and reconciliation, by devoting our
heads, hearts and hands, to matters
of finance, taxation, revenues, indus
trial and material improvement,
and equalizing the benefits and bur
thens of the government among all
classes and sections—matters which
* tend to assimulate the sections and
unite them on the basis of mutual
intft’cst. That it is time for the rep
resentatives of the people to think
for themselves and bo' not led
by passion or prejudice—but ad
dress ourselves to the great ques
tion of the ago—and that is : Not
how we became subjugated and
prostrated, and oppressed—but how
the millions of white people in the
South who are in this condition,
shall ever get up out of the dust,
and enter again on a career of po
litical and material prosperity aird
power. The city of Cuthbert of
fers a candidate for the Senate,
who belongs to this class, and open
ly and boldly publishes bis opin
ions and future policy if elected.
"We do not think it agaiu neces
sary to speak of him as au orator
and debater, a scholar and writer,
or as a lawyer and safe counsellor,
as a patriot and philanthropist,
and a Christian —as lie is fully en
dorsed by the press in every part
of the State. #
He is indebted to no official sta
tion for this splendid reputation.
It has arisen from bis conduct in
private life. And it now remains
for the Legislature to say whether
they will place him in a position
where his opinions and policy, and
his personal qualifications shall be
available for-the public good.

For CosiipfroJler General.
Col. W. L. Goldsmith, of DeKalb
County, is a candidate for Comp
troller General, subject to Demo
cratic nomination. Election by
Gen. Assembly, which meets in
January next.
Col. Goldsmith was raised in
Bartow County, Ga., was a brave
and gallant soldier of the “ Lost
Cause,” in the army of Virginia,
and fought his way from a Private
to the Lieut. Col’cy of the 14th Ga.,
Regiment. Was a member of the
Gen. Assembly of 1571—72, and
noted for his zeal and energy in
representing his constituency. lie
is a promising lawyer and in every
way qualified for the office which
he seeks. lie was a member of the
Committee on Blodgett’s Adminis
tration of the State Iload, appoint
ed by the last Gen. Assembly,
which paid some §28,000 into the
State Treasury, and we feel that
we risk nothing in saying, that if
Col. Goldsmith should be elected
to the office of Comptroller, the peo
ple will have an officer who will
fully and unflinchingly discharge the
duties of his office, and one who will
do honor to himself and the State.
We bespeak for him the support of
a large majority of the next Gen-.
Assembly. *

several other business houses were
