The Negro Eiodus,
Oir Georgia and Alabama ex
change contain information of a
tbrcrtU-... and Jiogro eiodu3 to Texas,
Arkansas, or the Lord knows where.
Like the tracks to the sick lioe’s den,
their tracks point only in one direc
tion—Southwest. If we are to lose
the society of the “ friend and
brother,” why should he not follow
is the “ foot-eteps oi bis illustrious
predecessors,” the carpet baggers,
and warm himself in the rays of the
rising sun ? Surely a mere change
of location should effect a change in
that love and sympathy which was
more endearing than that which ex
isted between the sou of Jesse and
the son of Haul.
Mr. Romlos Moore proposed, lft o
his great Roman ancestor, to lay the
foundations of a city which will ex'
cel all Roman, all Grecian fame. It
is to be exclusively African, and
death will be the fate of the white
Romns who dars overleap his broth
er’s wall. The convention which is
to blaze the way to the city, “ rich
with barbaric pearls and gold,” is
to meet in Atlanta on the 30th inst.
The negro is proverbially credulous
and skeptical, credulous when he
should least doubt. Many good and
industrious negroes may be duped
to endorse the exodus, but the far
greater number will be the lazy and
dissolute, who leaves their country
for their country’s good.
The Atlanta Herald of the 25th
says:
One of the most fruitful causes of
this Westward movement (among
whites as well as blacks), is the low
rates charged by the rail road for
tickets to Western stations. An at
tache of this paper publishes an in*,
terview with Mr. Wrcnn, of the W.
&A. U R, this morning, in which
that gentleman acknowledges that a
passenger can go from here to Tcx>
as for about half of what he can
come from Texas to Georgia. Mr.
Wrenn excuses himself for perpetra
ting what he confesses to be a pal
pable injustice to his State, by the
plea that lie “ must do it in order to
compote with othor roads leading in
tho sam? direction.”
The other roads will doubtless
plead the same excuse. Rut the
people will not be satisfied with it.
These roads have their headquart
ers in Georgia and Alabama.
Their interests all lie in these States.
Their stockholders live here. One
of them is the property of the State,
and yet they are doing more to rob
the State of its labor, and deplete
the ranks of farmers than any, or we
may say all other causes combined.
Morning Star
Telescope Eyes.
Eagles, vultures, and many liigli
flying birds of prey, are known to
have eys with movable coats or len
ses which they can adjust by objects
far or near, and which can magnify
things into perfect view at incredi
ble distandcs. A gentleman who
believed the crows possessed this
power, and whose belief was disput
ed, hit upon a plan to summon the
crows themselves as witnesses !
lie hired an sirfist to paint upon
a canvas the picture of the bloody
carcass of an ox, bright in color, and
trae to life —or rather true to death !
This canvas ho exposed in an open
field, where not a crow was to be
seen or beard anywhere. The nat
uralist had a few of his scientific
friends with him, but they conceal
ed themselves where they could
Watch. They had waited only a few
minutes, when they discovered one
of the black witnesses coming to
take his place “on the stand.” lie
whirled round and round the seem
ingly delicious morsel a few mo
ments, cawing at a great rate, when
he was joined by another, then an
other and another, until quite a
number had appeared, when they
swooped down together upon the
canvas, and tried to tear it to pieces
with their claws, failing to compre
hend the deception, even when the
senses of touch and smell could ex
ercised also. This, with other ex
periments, 6eemed clearly to prove
tho keenness of the sight of this
bird. The crows, and, in fact, most
birds carry their telescopes with
them, or in other word.s, have tele
scopic eyes, by which they are able
to see things upon the earth very
distinctly though they may be fly
ing at a great height or distance.—

A gitl in Georgia brought a suit
against a recent lover, claiming ten
thousand dollars damages, but she
compromised for four bales of cot
ton and anew parasol. Her lawyer
took the cotton for his fee, and she
kept the parasol to heal her wound
ed affections.
A,Vermonter, who wont South

and wrote home an account of a
marvellous cave he had explored, it
Dow seems, had walked into the
mouth of a colored member of the
Mississippi Legislature while the
eminent law-maker was enjoying a
drunken snooze.

elor to abandon his resolution to

Pork in the West.
The New York Commercial of late
date has this:
The New York dealeis are receiv
ing favorable accounts trom the
Western provision traders. We
have advices from Eggleston, Hen
ness & Cos., under date 13th inst., in
which they say of tho pork crop
that the home consumption is draw
ing upon the new product im
mediately on the opening of the
season, and the out look for at least
r a month is favorable for quick sales
at full prices. With the advent of
.the colder weather, the receipts of
hogs have increased, and their quali
ty, though considerably beiovv the
average at this time last year,is im
proving- The^demand from pack
ers and shippers has been more ur
gent, and prices since the 9th inst.
have steadily advanced. W hether
the foreign demand —yet in abey
ance, but bound to come—will equal
last year’s, will depend on the ten
dency of values, whicli now already
are fully one-third above the aver
age of one year ago. Judging from
developments so far, the prospects
are suspicions for an active season,
and the only danger to be feared
will be that the speculative interest !
may too early force prices to a range
which would impede legitimate bus
iness, and, while other food supplies
are cheap, leap to economy in both
foreign and home consumption of
the hog products.
Cash Instead of Credit.—Peo
ple who buy for cash always buy
cheaper than those who buy on
credit. They buy, too, more closely,
and select more carefully. Purchases
which are paid for when made, are
limited more exactly to the pur
chaser’s wants. There is nothing
like having to count the money out
when the article is bought to make
people economical. Tho amount of
indebtedness incurred is not much
considered when the pay day it“far
off. Persons who do all business
on a cash basis know just where
they stand, and what they can af
ford ; consequently they never find
after occasion for regretting in a
turn of times, that they haveindulg
ed in this that luxury, which they
would have foregone had they seen
what was coming. Real wants are
few, and can be gratified for cash ;
at all events they should always be
limited to what can be paid for in
cash. llow much of auxiety, how
many sleepless hours, how many
heart-burnings, disappointments,
and regrets would be avoided if
this rule were always strictly adher
ed to.
Carbolic Acid for Insects. —An
Ohio correspondent of the Country
Gentleman says :
“I am using a remedy for driving
away insects and bugs that works to
a charm, and if any of your readers
have not tried it, I advise them to
waste no time with soot, ashes, cct.,
but ask their druggist to order for
them a pound of carbolic acid, No.
5, which will cost seventy-five cts.
If airslaked lime is to be had, use a
teaspoouful of acid to a quart of
lime; mix well, and dust over the
plants. One application is frequent
ly sufficient. The cabbage flea
(jumping Jack) threatened to de
stroy my plants of cabbage and
ruta-bagas, but one dose was suffi
cient to clear the garden of them.
If the lime is not slaked, take one
teaspoonful of acid to a pint of hot
water and slake tho lime with the
mixture.”
llow to Keep Warm. —One stay
not to keep warm, is to drink free
ly of hot drinks ; to keep the pores
of the skin closed ; to eat more than
can be digested ; to sit over a hot
air furnace }to lace tightly } wear
tight gaiters, tight slices-, tight
gloves, and bundle up with “heaps”
of warm clothing; wear mufflers
around the neck, and avoid a breath
of cool fresh air ; take wine or bit**
ters before meals, and- pills to' aid
digestion after eating. J)'o this
daily, a month or more, and you
will boas tender as a tropical house
plant, and will lake “dreadful colds”
on the slightest exposure. Ilot
drinks just before going out are
especially favorable to induce
chills ; and this is about the way
many are now trying so cheat na
ture and to prolong a miserable ex
istence.— Science of Health.
Our young men frequently com
plain of bad luck. Bad luck is sim
ply a man with his hauds in his pock'

his mouth, waiting for something to
turn up. Good luck is a man of
pluck with r.o- idle time, always do
ing something, ami he usually makes
it turn up.

Forgiveness.
The mantle of charity ought to be
thrown around the faults of our fel
low beings. “Thy sins be forgiven
thee,” should be the answer for us
to give to those who have sinned
against us, and wished to be taken
back to our bosoms and be as they
once were, pure and sinless. For
give and forget; memory will not
let us forget, but is in the power of
exalted human benevolence. Sad
dening scenes will often press them
selves upon our attention, even
when we do the best to prevent
them. So scenes of inharruony be
tween ourselves and our human re
lations will arise in the soul, not
withstanding the presence and in
fluence of that principle Christian
charity which should inspire every
human soul with its divine efful
gence. Yet memory, however,
faithful to her trust, will not pre
vent us from being lenient towards
the faults and follies of others, and
even to forgive their departure
from a true life.

C. P. Knight, Esq., Baltimore—Dear sir
Yours of a recent date is to hand making en

Enamel Paint. (Brad'ey’s Patent.) I have
been using it for eighteen months, or two
years, as you are aware, for myself, and or

general satisfaction. In point of Durability
and Economy, it is preferable to the old way
of panning. It is certainly much ffio e Con
