National Democratic Ticket. For President, Hon. Grov’r Cleveland, Of New York. For Vice-President, Hon. T. A. Hendricks, Of Indiana. For Governor, HON. HENRY D. He DANIEL. For Secretary of State, I!OX. N. C. IURNETT. For Comptroller General, I10N. AV. A. WRIGHT. For Treasurer, HON. rout: u. IIAUDEMAX. For Attorney General, HON. CLIFFORD ANDERSON. An Important Matter. A recent contested election in Pike county disclosed the fact that a third of the negroes of that county had no right to vote. A careful investigation doubtless would show the same condition of things here. AA'e append thccou- eluding part of Prof. Woodall's ar ticle on the subject: As Hie constitution of Georgia provides that no one is a qualified voter in this state unless lie lias paid all taxes demanded of Inin since 1877, nearly fifty per cent, of the colored voters whocast their ballots in our county election were found to be illegal voters on one or more of the above grounds. From U«e facts brought, out by tin's investigation in our county. I am sure that thousands and tens of thousands of illegal votes are cast in Georgia every general election year; and that the num ber of such votes cast in the southern states is surprisingly and appallingly great. Let the law abiding citizens of every county in Georgia, through a special committee, or otherwise, take the tax digest s of their coun ty, beginning with 1878, and closely investigate the tax record ! of every mau in the county over 21 years old, tracing a voter's re cord back to the county or coun ties from which he came, if he has recently moved inlo a county. Next lo ik up every tax fi fa in the county. Then ascertain the names of those disfranchised by being criminals. Make a list of all men who have thus disqualified themselves as voters have it print cd, and furnish it to the managers of election at every precinct in Georgia's YVenllh. The Comptroller-General lias nearly completed his estimate for the lax levy for 1S8L This esti mate is bused upon the returns of taxable property now in, and is placed in round numbers at $300, Ncaatvrlal Coarralim. The Convention to nominate a candidate for Senator from the -lie 11ill Senatorial District met in court house in this city yesterday morning at 10 o’clock. Col. Jas. On motion “ of Judge We $287,000,000, showing an increase! " u ** s ’ ol a coin ’ ™ miltee of two from eacli county of Lj,000,000. The last lax act.; H;ls appointed to consider creden- under which this tax levy will be \ tials, and agree upon the number made, makes no provision for the payment of any maturing bonds. It appears that $100,000 of the Nutting bonds will fall due next year, and the question as lo the authority of the Slate to make an increase of-tbc tax rate to cover this liability lias lately been eon sidcred hy the Governor, the Comptroller General and Attor ney-General Anderson. The rate prescribed by the last tax bill of delegates each county was en titled to. Committee reported that each county should have 13 dele gates. L"iMin a vote that Clay was entitled to the candidate the re sult was adverse. A resolution by Prof. McNulty to bind the Convention by the result was withdrawn at the request of Clay delegation. The two-thirds rule was adopted, aud the balloting commenced. The name of Dr. M. A. Baldwin was presented, and the vote stood as follows: Baldwin, 24’!; Hoy!, was two and one half mills.
