Mr. E. R. Hathaway, of Monte
zuma, caiuc to our city last Mon
day afternoon, and had a meeting
of the Committee and subscribers
to the Artesian Well Fund called
in the Court Ilonsc. The result
was, that the Committee engaged
Mr. Hathaway to bore the well,
and he will commence work just
as soon as he can transport his
engine and machinery here from
Montezuma. While the spot for
the well is not yet certainly loca
ted, it is probable that it will be
just outside the Southwest corner
of the Court House square. We
have not heard a more suitable
place suggested.
In the meantime, Capt. Kiddoo,
who is Treasurer of the Wei 1
Fund, will at once call upon the
subscribers to the Fund for a
part of their subscription.

Several of our exchanges have Whoish dot taken me by dor hand,
been noticing the death of Rcr. J
H. Brooks, (coL) of Washington
City. He is put down by these
exchanges as the champion bap-
tizer, having surpassed the record
of the Rev. Jasper, of Richmond,
Va., in that he baptized 50 people
in 7G minutes—one hour and 16
minutes. This is small work when
compared with the feat of Rev.
L. Solomon, (col..) of this city,
who baptized 87 in 27 minutes,
reciting the whole baptismal for
nnda in each instance, with pre
vision, and without seeming haste.
A large number of white persons
were present, wbo declare tliat the
whole iierformance was carried
through “decently and in order,”
and no one would have suspected
that he was making the fastest
baptismal record in existence.
