Camphor Drops for Cholera.
As the season is upon us when
attacks of cholera morlnis and kin
fired diseases are prevalent, «
publish a simple remedy which
was issucil in hand bill term by
the Hibernian Printing Ollice.
Dublin Ireland, during the severe
visitation of the cholera in 1830,
and was the means of saving thou
sands of lives'. It was also used
with valuable effect in 1848, and
wc would advise its use again
should that epidemic visit our
shores. In any case, however, no
harm could be done by having it
ia the house during the warm
months: ‘'Dissolve one ounce ol
camphor in six ounces of spirits
of wine and give a small bottle
of it to any intelligent person in
your neighborhood who will un

Summary of Address by Her. J. W.
I,ee, of Georgia, at Chatcnga.
Mr. President, ladies and gen
A Tear of Plenty.
The crops this year arc unex
am pics!. In abundance, variety
h men: \Ve are very much obliged an,] excellence they arc without
in Mr. Sterns and his co-workers parallel. It is trnlv a year of
for the temperance they generate plenty. In cotton, grasses, corn,
in New York. Me take them fruit and vegetables the yield has
down South and translate them j been enormous. Will tbe surplus
into prohibition. '1 hey are tak- j we have made be prudently gatia
ing form so permanent and mil- cred and careful! v husbanded? We
versal in our section of the Union
that there is about to be a solid
Sout.li in more senses than one.—
The south is soon to lie solid for
prohibition. Wc want to see it
soliil on Ibis line. So solid lli.it a
man might travel from the Ohio
river to the Gulf, and from Wil
mington. N’oi tli Carolina, to San
Antonio, Texas, without being
able to get a single drink of whis
key.
Out of the one hundred and
thirty six counties in Georgia,
seizes 1 with cholera ni
nny
of its ! ninety seven of them have prohi-
symptoms, without deviating in
bition.
Wc have deliberately
the slightest degree from ajiy 0 f tome to the conclusion that prolii
the follrwing instructions: When
any person is seized with symp
toms of cholera, such as vomiting
purging, sudden weakness, cold
ness, cramps or spasms, do not
give him brandy, or whiskey or
any kind of medicine, whatever,
put him to bed at once, covering
him warmly, but not overloading
him with bedclothes, and as soon
as you possibly can let the patient
take two drops (not more) of the
camphor mixture on a little pound
ed sugar in a spoonful of cold or
iced water. In five minutes after
let him take a second dose of two
drop® in the samewsy, anil in live
minutes more repeat the same
thing. He is then to wait ten or
fifteen minutes to see whether
or not there is a sense of return
ing warmth, with a disposition to
ward perspiration and manifest
decrease of sickness, cramps, etc..
when, if necessary, lie must take
two drops, as before, and repeat
the dose every five minutes until
twelve or fourteen drops have been
taken. In administering this
remedy yon must particularly ob
serve that if the patient takes any
thing of any sort or kind, except
cold or iced water while the medi
cine is intended to operate, its
whole effect will be destroyed, for
the least foreign medicine neutral
izes the camphor, which is given
to check vomiting and to produce
a free, warm perspiration. The
use of cold or iced water is given
on the advice of the late celehra-
tnl and successful Dr. Piddoek,
of London, who always allowed bis
patients to drink cold or iced wa
ter, as it tends to promote free
perspiration, and also the abun
dant discharge of yellow bile.”
The patient must not he all >wrd
to rise and expose him or herself
to the slightest degree of cold and
should not be tormented with
baths, steamings or rubbings or
rubbing of any kind, but permit
ted to lie still, as he will fall asleep
when perspiration comes on, and
after some hours will, with God's
assistance, awake well, though
bition is Imlb possible and practi
cable. And we have also come to
the conclusion that we had better
destroy tbe liquor traffic while we
have the power to do it, and be
fore it destroys onr people. There
were those in our Stale who, a few
years ago, made the argument
that the time bad not come for pro
hibition. The time for prohibi
tion is always come when there is
a whiskey shop to prohibit. And
it is not well for a State to wait
till the whisky traffic has corrupt
ed her people and brought desola
lion into her homes before she
moves in this direction.
A certain old ladv bought a
fear not. The Southern farmer
is not a great saver. The very
affluence of his soil and the mild
p.ess of his climate has made him
careless anti lavish. It is hardly
too much to say that millions of
bushels of peaches will rot on the
trees in the southern country thi*
year, ami millions of dollars be
sent out of the states next winter
to buy canned and preserved
peaches from the north. Rich
and succulent grasses will waste
by the thousands of tons for the
lack of curing anil our stock be
wintered on v.cstern hay at .*20 a
ton. Even corn itself will he led
lavishly or wasted, ami next year
the farmer will buy corn of his
commission merchant and pay for
ty per cent, interest on the money.
There is no computing the value
the rich crops of this year would
he to the sou tli if they were pru
dently used ami the surplus care
fully put away. Many a farmer
will make enough corn to th* him
two nr three years, and fodder,
that if cured properly would be
sweet ant! wholesome food for his
cattle four yours hence. If there
were ensilage pits on each small
farm, they might he filled this sea
son ami enough forage laid away
at a nominal cost to carry forty or

caught the turkeys, and forced
enough whisky down their throats
to make them all drunk. The old
lady looking out of the window,
and seeing the turkeys keeled over
in the yard, supposed they had all
suddenly died with cholera.—
“Coinc, girls,” she said, “will pit k
them and save the feathers.”—
About the time the turkeys were
picked they got sober. Seeing"
the peculiar plight they were in,
they began to dance around in

say quit to the whiskey busings
before it strips us of our morality,
our money and our homes.
Prohibition is doing wonders [
for the South. Under its inllu-'
cnee trade is improving. Many
people used to think that prohibi
lion would damage trade, but il
does not. A man out West was
making a speech against prohibi
turn. “\\ hat will you do, my fcl
lov countrymen, with all the corn
you raise in Illinois—jf the sale
and manufacture of whiskey is
prohibited? A person in the an

The barn is the important feature
in southern farm economy this
year. The hayrick, the ensilage
pit, the fodder stack, the pre
serves’ closet,- are the points to
which the farmer should address
himselt. The crops are assured
in exceeding fullness and variety.
Man and beast cannot possibly
exhaust them. It is a simple
question as to whether the enor
mous surplus will be wasted or
saved. If it is saved, it will stand
as a resource against the possible
short crops oi two or three vi ars.
If wasted, this grand harvest that
providence seems to have exhaust,
