Florida is now set down as one

i the 7,000,000 bales which were
j last year produced in the Sooth
jern States clothed the greater
part of the civilized world; and
they might add, a large part of
the uncivilized world also. Cot
ton nhfell lias passed from Ten
nessee to Manchester finds its
way out to Centra! Africa and to
the innermost partsof the Chinese
Empire. No article in universal
consumption is so localized, both
as to growth and manufacture:
tor though cotton is grown in
Egypt and India, and woven in
lYnnysy]vania and Xormnnv, by
far the larger share of total pro
duce is grown in the Southern
Slates r.ud made into cloth in
Lancashire. This should give
the furthcoming New Orleans Ex
position a peculiar interest in the
eyes of English people. But there
will be very much else to see in
the vast mass of buildings that is
now hastening towards eomplc-
vention to nominate candidates
for county officers is being dis
cussed very generally iu t'-ccoun
ty; and while we are familiar
with the fact that the party, as
such, has made no nomination for
these places of trust, within the
last eight or ten years, as well as
the fact that the abandonment of
the system of nominating candi
dates for these places has worked,
and can work no harm to the pea
pie, yet there arc those who be
lieve a nomination of some sort
should lie made. It is charged
that those most anxious for a
nomination think they sec in it a
chance for preferment which they
would not have before the people,
that a convention affords many
opportunities for weak men, and
can easily he manipulated by
“tricksters” and political sharp
ers, whereas it is well known the
people always vote for the man
they want, and are not easily de
ceived or hoodwinked into putting
wrong men into place. Those who
sec no use in a convention say, the

From all appearances the mat

We think here is a trio of bach
elor brotherhoods in the commu

who fully agree with the poet that
sajs:

On last Sabbath, according to
promise, we spent the day with
our friend, Mr. D. S. Newkirk,
who resides near Bethel cbnrch,
in the Fourth District. We found
it rather quiet in the Fourth, and
a short cotton crop, as is the case
everywhere we have heard from.
Mr. Newkirk is a very hospita
ble and kindly disposed gentle
man, always having a bright smile
and pleasant word for all with
whom lie meets, but on this occa
sion be met us with a melancholy
expression and dejected air, for
lie and his excellent lady have
lion. There will be ail the innu
merablc classes and snb classes of
materials and manufactures to
which wc are accustomed in these

Group X. concludes. To two on

The former will probably lie the

Both the Atlanta Constitution
and the Macon Telegraph contain
an account of the sudden and re
markable recovery of a lady in
Macon, who was considered to be
in the last stages of consumption.
She made her last public appear
ance in January, being borne in
the arms of her companions at the
lime. She was reduced from 118
to 67 pounds, and having received
the last sacraments of the Catho
lic church, to which she belonged,
she awaited death. All at once
thing is fair and open, let as many j ,,3t passed thiongh an ordeal
that none hut those who have
gone through similar ones know
men as desire run for these offices,
and let the people take who they
want out of the number.
It will not affect the party, whe
tlicr a convention or any other
mode of nomination is had, but it
seems to me. the only fair and eq
uilaliie way to nominate, if it is
determnmed to have noinin itions.
is to hold a primary election un
dor the order and control ot the Ex
ecutive Committee, in which elec
tion every man in the county de
siring one or another of the sever
al county offices, shall have tin
right to put his name before the
people, and the candidates receiv
ing the highest number of votes
for any office to lie declared the
nominee for the office.
This would be jierfectly fair to
all, and the only tiling that would
lie fair to those men, who, resting
lithe belief that the Executive
Committee would follow the prv
cedent of the last 10 years, an'
hold no Convention or other modi
if nominating, have already 4e
dared themselves candidates.
It is well to let the majority
•ule, and it is fair that every mat
.lionld have an equal chance ti
get a majority in his favor. Let
here he no trickery, no fooling
ao jobs put upon the people. N
man can he afraid of a primary
--■lection, excel t the man the pen
pie don’t want. There is no cal.
for nominations, if held it will not
lie in the interest of the people,
but in the interest of ; sp : rants!
Then, let every man eoiue out, ci
tlicr in January, before the people,
or some time earlier, in a primary
e eelion; and let the whole party
say who they want to have those
places.
There can lie no swindle in this
kind of nomination; it will be tin
people’s work, the nominees of
their own choice, and without
doubt a choice that will be rati
lied at the {Mills. We have too
much trickery and sham in our
State polities. Surely the people
and not the politicians should
name their county officers.
