Au old colored man plies bis

in tbe Union Depot at Columbus.
He is one of those bright looking
old chaps that everybody likes to
talk to.
“Well, pap,” inquired one of
his customers a few days ago,
“you are for Blaine, aren’t you?’
“Dunno’bout that, salt. Who's
yo* for?”
“Oh, I’m a Blaine man every
day in the week.”
“So’m I, boss. Blaine am de
man. My two sons an’ mj- son in
law’s for Cleveland, but I’ll bring
’em ovah—I’ll fix ’em. Nevalt
yo' feah!”
The customer was well pleased,
both with tbe old man’s work and
Ins words, and gave him a quar
ter.
“Did I hear you say you were
for Cleveland?” inquired the next
customer.
"G’way. iVhat’s an old man
like me got to do with politics?"
“Well, you ought to vote for
Cleveland. Blaine’s a fraud.
Why’ didn’t he go to the war? - ’
“Jus’ what I was tellin' dat od

early an’ late, boss. Mj- two sons
and my son-in-law’s for Blaine,
but I'm talkin' ’em ovah—I'll
fetch ’em. No Blaine in mine,

The Democrat was so well pleas

into the old man's hand.
The next customer was a Pro

the old darkej- was for St. John,
and was loud in his boasts as to
wbat he was going to do~with his
sons and son in-law. His reward
was twelve cents.
The fourth man to occupy the
chair happened to be for Butler.
After ascertaining this by his
usual non committal caution the
old sinner came out for the Peo

son-in-law. Reward fifteen cents.
“See here, you black rascal,”
exclaimed a bystander who had
overheard the conversation, “what

Malarial Poison.
Rome, Ga., May 23, 1883.—In
1880 I came from the North to
take charge of the gas works in
Rome, as superintendent, and af
ter the overflow, which occurred in
the spring following, I was verv
much exposed to malarial poison,
and in 1882 found my blood so
contaminated with the poison
that I was forced to give up busi
ness. I was treated by the Rome
pliysicans without relief, they ad
vising me to go North, which I
did. The doctors North told me
that my only hope was to return
to the milder climate abd accord
ingly I came back to Rome, com
pletely broken down and nearly
a skeleton. My trouble finally
determined in an abscess of the
liver, anti nearly every one. (my
self included) thought I was doom
ed to die within a few days. In
this condition I was advised by a
friend to take Swift’s Specific, and
I took it just as a drowning man
would catch at a straw, but as
soon as my system got under the
influence of the remedy, the ab
scess came to a point and burst,
passing off without pain. In fif
teen days after this I was up at
my work, and since enjoyed excel
lent health.

The Sumter Republican says:
“Tuesday the first passenger
train left Macon for Ellavillr.
The train was new Arum engine to
all the roaches, and made its ap
pcaraucc at Andersonville early
Tuesday morning. Ellaville now
has railroad connection with the
world, and we doubt not, will take
on city like appearance. It is as
pretty a village, and as healthful
p'ace as the State can boast, and
we will be proud to see it growing
in imputation and pros|>crity. The
good |>c«plc of that county de
serve much more than n railroad.”
Christianity.
There is a feeling pervading
the whole being of every true
Christian, which ennobles him
and makes him perceive the value
of Christianity. There is nothing
that adds more to tlie value of a
man than Christianity. It makes
him a good citizen, a good neigh
bor, and a willing and earnest
performer of ail the duties which
devolve Upon him, as a son a
brother, a father of a husband.
It makes women good wives, good
mothers, good sisters and good
daughters. It makes in every
possessor more valuable to the
community in which lie lives.
Christianity can lift a man from
the lowest stratum of society and
place him in an honorable position
nmong men. It has an elevating
influence and can cleanse a roan
of his impurities, thus fitting him
lor the society of the good. If it
were not for Christianity' we
would soon degenerate into a race
of barbarians. Look at the chil
dren of those who do not counten
ance the Christian religion. They
finally sink into the lowest depths
of degradation, from which they
can be raised only by tbe saving
grace of Christianltj-.
If Christianity were but a myth,
still it would deserve tbe support
of all for the good it bas done.
Take away our churches, and our
condition would soon become de
plorable indeed. Schools and col
leges could not save us, for they
are but the outgrowth of Chris
tianity. They are valuable, but
an intellectual education, and
without any of the teachings of
Christianity combined with it,
would fail to be of any’ value to its
possessor. He wouid not promote
his own permanent welfare or that
of any one else.
Such a one would prey upon so
ciety destroying ihe virtue of the
people and hindering their pros
perity. Succesfnl gamblers and
swindlers are generally men of in
telligence, but they lack Chris
tian knowledge. They do noth
ing to pro.-.iote the prosperity of
the country. They obtain a liv
ing by preying on others. So a
knowledge of the essential ele
ments of Christianity, morality,
sobriety, virtue, temperance, char
ity, Ac., as they are taught by-
ministers and Christian fathers
and mothers is a necessary part
of every useful education.

“What is that in thine hands
Abel?” “Nothing but a wee lamb,
0 God, taken from the flock; I
propose offering it to Thee, a will
mg sacrifice.” And so he did, and
the sweet smell of that burning
has been filling the air ever since,
and constantly going up to God
as a perpetual sacrifice praise.
“What is that thou hast in thine
hand, Moses?” “Nothing but
staff, O God, with which I tern
my flocks.” “Take it and use
forme,” said God. And he did.
and with it wrought more won
drous things than Egypt and her
proud king had seen before.
“Mary, what is that thou hast
in thine hands?” “Nothing but
pot of sweet smelling ointment, O
God, wherewith I would anoint
this holy one who is called Jesus.’’
And she did so, and not only did
the perfume fill the house in which
they were, but the Bible reading
world has been fragrant with the
memory of the blessed act of love,
which has ever since been spoken
of “as a memorial of her.”
“Poor woman, what is that thou
hast in thine hand?” said God.
Only two mites, Lord. It is very-
little, but then it is all I have, and
1 would put it into the treasury.”
And she did so. and the story of
her generous giving has ever since
wrought like a charm in prompt
ing others to give to the Lord.
“What is that thou hast in thine
hand, Dorcas?” “Only a needle.
Lord.” “Take it and use it for
me,” said God. And so she did,
and not only were the suffering
poor of Joppa warmly clad, but
inspired by this loving life, “Dor
cas societies” even now continue
their benign mission to the poor
throughout the earth.—S. S.

A bad boy broke up a camp

they did to get away from the hor

would soon be no further use fur

“Better; your chance is really

“How can you say that from
