A Change lor the iieller.
The time was when under strong
party influence, the loyalty of an
editor to his party would have
'•eon seriously questioned if he
had published communications
lilfering from the principles of
Ins party’s platform. That lime
happily is past, and newspapers
now propose to give the people in
formation—to keep their readers
well posted on all matters of in
terest, and to let them know what
can he said on both sides of a snI»
ject.
We have run the Enterprise A
Appeal on lhis schedule for tin
ast few years, and it [ias worked
•ell. Every man in the county
has had an equal showing, from
the lowest to the highest. We
have repeatedly thrown our . col
umns open to all. and invited cor
respondence, whether the views
expressed agreed with our own 01 |
not. We have never heard of a
single complaint on this score.
We have not however, and do not
now agree to publish eccrything
that may he sent. In the exercise
of our best discretion we have had
to reject many communications—
not because they contained differ-
i cut views from what we held—hut stitution,
because they were not in a right
spirit, and were certain to stir tip
: unnecessary strife. We think in
| this way we have already averted
j three or four small wars in the
j county. The wisdom of an editor
is shown not so much by what
goes in a paper, hut by what is
left out.
We *h dl continue in the same

It is singular that a place doing
the business thatCuthhcrt does
should have do banking facilities.
We shall not stop to argue the
need of a bank, for every business
man feels the need of it. With
out it our business men are fre
qticutly hampered anti embarrass
ed, and lor the same reason,
much trade that legitimately be
longs here is driven toother point*
nuch further away, where such
/acuities do exist. A great many
cotton buyers have come here in
the last few years intending to
buy cotton, but after a few days,
unsatisfaetory experience have
•eft. There was no bank through
•vhich they could transact their
business. A great many farmers
carry their cotton to other points
ior the simple reason that if cot
ton Ik* low, they can store ii
ami draw half its value or more
and wait for a “rise.” They can
not do it here. The cotton is thus
lost to us and their trade lost to
our town.
It seems to us that the husines*
men ol the town hold the key to.
the situation. If they would de
termine to originate such an in
they have it in their
power to do so. There is no need
for the estab’ishinent of a Nation
a I Dank with charter and all that.
A bank agency would accomplish
the end desired. This could he
arranged for without any lai e
amount of money on our own pari.
An arrangement could be made
with the Central Railroad by
which at least $30,000 of its nioii
**v could be handled without c«»*t
