Fire! Fire!!
“Let us receive the Benediction.’’
was what Rev. F. A. Branch said
right in the midst of his sermon
last Sunday morning. He had
observed that certain gentlemen
in the congregation were quietly
called out, and from their charac
ter he felt sure there was a tire
somewhere in town. The whole
congregation tiled slowly and leis
"rely out, and were ujion the
ground before they were aware
that it was their own iiousc ot
worship that was on tire.
“You are dismissed,” said the
pastor of the Baptist church, in
the midst of his sermon on the
same morning as the Presbyterian
and Methodist church bell* rang
out the fire alarm, and while the
firemen in the congregation liur
ried to the engine house, the oth
er members hurried round to the
Methodist church to sec where
the fire was.
By some means the roof on the
outside had caught—whether from
a defective flue on the inside, nr a
spark tailing on the outside, is
not certain. The firemen resign
ded with wonderful quickness.
The chemical extinguisher was
soon on the spot, and the nozzle
was soon on '.he fire which was ea
sily subdued. It is hut fair to
say that the flames had been meas
urably gotten under control by
some mem hers of the congrega
tion before the arrival of the Ex
tinguisher. In the meantime the
steamer “Flower Allison" had
been put in position, the hose laid
to the church ami everything got,
in readiness to |ioiir on a flood of
water if it had been necessary.

Unfortunately, the tax books
fail to shoV the value of property
in Georgia. They show simplv
the valuation at which the people
are willing for their properly to lie
taxed. There arc exceptions, of
course, but the rule is as stated.
On the average, it is fair to say
!lint, properly is returned at about
half its market value. The State
is pressed for funds, and the Leg
islature has resorted to shallow,
il not unconstitutional, shifts to
furnish the means for meeting its
obligations. IIow much simpler
and more creditable it would have
been to have passed a law enforc
ing the return of properly at its
market value—tlms doubling the
revenues of the State!—Albany

Here is what the agricultural
editor of the Bainbridge Democrat
says about planting corn: “Obser
ration lias taught every observant
farmer that if he wants to make
sure of a good corn crop, let him
plant early. The drought of the
summer rarely ever sets in before
July, and if the farmer has plant
ed early and cultivates well, he
will he pretty sure to make a good
corn crop. So don’t wail for your
neighbor to begin, but get ready
and plant early.’’

Quinine is now recommended
as an exhilurant in the place of
liquor. Those who have tried
both give the preference decidedly
to quinine. It is not intoxicating,
does not make a man a fool.
Quinine tones up a man, gives him
good blood, and makes him feel
lively. The bail consequences
that follow the use of liquor do
not follow the use ot quinine.
