General BarHw—Captain Daa Calls*
baa Saj» be is Xlsjadged—X He*
feme af His Ms!ires.
Major Daa Callahan, the well
known railroa.l contractor, re
turned to Atlanta a day or two
ago after an absence of several
months. Ho came directly from
Central America, and while there
had an opportunity of witnessing
many of the incidents in the war
now progressing between General
Barrios, the president of Gaule
inala, and the allied stales ofC’en
tral America.
While on his way home from
Gauteinala M.ijor Callahan stop
j>ed a few days in Catiama, ahd
was detained there lunger than
he wished by the revolution now
in progress in that government.
While at Aspinwall lie saw a
model Central American revolu
tion, which was accomplished by
sixty men in a few hours. They
captured a government stronghold
and took contra! of the city after
a street fight.
The next day the government,
forces rallied, drove out the rebels
and reasserted * its authority.
About thirty men w<?re killed in
this melee. The captain says it
is impossible without daily re
ports to tell which side is on top
in the present Panama troubles.
In reference to Gauteinala lie said
that he thought the general im
pression in this country
t'XJCST TO GENERAL BARRIOS.
“The reason of this,’’ said Cap
tain Callahan, “is that toe cne
mies of Barrios are sending ail the
news which the newspapers get in
the United States. They have
control of the cables and they
color the situation to suit their
own interest. They represent
Barrios as a bloodthirsty tyrant,
an aspiring despot, and a sworn
enemy to American interests. All
this is wrong. I know General
Barrios personally and I know the
circumstances under which he
lias been acting in this trouble.
There was undouh'.cdly an agree
ment between the Central Ameri-
cm stales tor a consolidated gov
ernment witli Barrios as its head.
He weut into it in good faith, lit
is a capable man with broad ami
ambitious ideas which aimed at a
consolidation of the petty and
constantly wrangling states into
one Btrong government. 1 think
the unanimous sentiment of Gau
temala and the most intelligent
sentiment in the other states is in
sympathy with this idea ot Cruci
al Barrios. The present trouble
is agitated by local princes and
politicians who see a prospect of
losing their power in the cousoli
dated government. Barrios’ plans
were fully and fairly laid before
the Central American slates, and
they met their approval. When
he prepared to carry them out,
sad called on them to stand by
their agreement, the present
trouble arose.”
“What is the relative power of
Gauteinala and the allies?’’
“Gautemala is the richest, most
populous,and most intelligent ol
the Central American states. It
is far more tit than any of the
others for self government. The
people have progressive ideas ami
are improving iu all respects un
der the presidency of Barrios.”
“Do yon think he will succeed
in coercing the other states?’’
“I do. He has an army of
25,000 men already in the Geld.
It is v eil disciplined ami is clii
ccred by men of courage and in
telligeuec. Barrios lias military
genius of a high order and he is
fn |icrsonal command of this
army. I saw a part of it 'and was
surprised at the military appear
a sec of the men. They are far
superior to any other Central
American troops. With this army
I believe Barrios can easily eon
quer the allies, though they claim
to have an army twice as large.
Their soldiers arc ill drilled and
inferior in every sense to the Gau
teuiaiar.”
“Who is the most conspicuous
leader of the allies?’’
“There is none. While there is
on one side a bold and capable
man, with a united following, on
the other there are four govern
ments,- each inlerually weak and
all weakly trailed. They have no
conspicuous leaders and arc not
apt to develop any.”
“Is Barrios popular in Gaute
mala?”
“Very. The stories of his cruel
ties and despotism are gross ex
aggerations. He has had many
scheniing traitors to deal with,
and has not hesitated to treat
them as their rascality deserved,
but I think he lias been a just and
fair ruler when we take all his
snrrouudings into the account.”
“Will not Mexico prevent this

There are many land owners in
Georgia who own hundreds of
acres of land, and that is about
all they have besides their annual
tax receipts. What Georgia, and
South West Georgia in particu

farms, better farmers and more
people, better schools, more tax
payers, more church goers, fewer
loafers and considerable less whis
ky drinking and some manufac
turing enterprises. Sell small
tracts of land. What does a man
