THE ewsirs OF HAUEKT0W5.
Mrs. Walker, the grocer's wife,
was an inveterate gossip. The
habit of discujsjng the affairs of
tier neighbors had assumed the
form of a chronic complaint; it
had grown stronger as she grew
older, and developed its peculiari
ties more strikingly as she jour
neyed down the vale of rears.
We cannot say that she meant
to do any person a real injury by
what she said respecting them;
but she seemed to experience a
morbid pleasure in dilating upon
the loibles, failings or eccentric
ities of those about her. We
Would not have It understood that
(die was the only one in Hainmer-
town addicted to meddling with
that which did not concern her;
she had a bev3’ ot particular
friends who sympathized with her
in obtaining secrets and in keep
ing them.
Among those choice spirits
might lie mentioned the names of
Mrs. Ilill, Mrs. Fay, and Mrs.
Grimes, who were near neighbors
and professedly intimate friends.
When anything of unusual inter
est transpired in Ilammcrtown.
Mrs.-Walker was the first to hear
of it; she was famous also for
making discoveries; and when she
fancied she had arrived at some i

Mrs. Fay quieted the fears of
her friend on this subject, and
drawing her chair closer prepared
with the pleasure only known to a
true gossip to hear the announce
ment.
‘Remember, Arabella, that 1
would not place so much confi
dence in any other human being.

’Oil, Lncretia!' exclaimed Mrs.
r ay holding up her bands in pious
horror..
‘True as the very Bible,’ con
tinued the other, impressively.
‘How much did she take, do
you know?’ asked Arabella.
•Mrs. Walker didn't say, but
enough, I'll warrant you.’
‘And she lias been called such a
very nice woman, too!’
‘Yes, and being riicIi a staunch
clinrch member, into the bargain.'
•Pride must have a fail. Sin
ai ways carried her head pretty

‘She won’t he apt to hold it up

cy; and by the agency of the lat
ter, it may naturally be supposed
that the affair was not long in
passing through the various
shades of coloring imparted to it
by the imaginations of the three
friends, so that in a little While all
lliumuertown was conversant with
it.
One day Mrs. Walker put on
her bonnet and wenttoMis. Hill's
with a face unusually mysterious
in its aspect. Mrs. Hill saw al
once Hull something of importance
was passing in the busy brain of
lier visitor, and she ingeniously
set herself to work to learn the
state of her mind.
*‘l do declare I haven't seen you
look so well for an age!’’ she ex
claimed. “Sit down and rest
yourself and teii me if there is
anything new over your way now.”
•‘There is always something new
under the sun. Solomon to the
contrary notwithstanding,'' repli
ed Mrs. Walker, who was deter
mined not to be cheated out of her
secret, until she had first excited
the curiosity of her friend. "Yes"
she added, senlimentally, “there
is always something dcw going
on, but it is not best to tell all
one knows,”
“The very identical words that
I said to Mrs. Fay. It beats all!
But you arc always an exemplary
person in that respect, and no
body can say any hurt of you far
nor near. If there’s anything 1
like it is to see people minding
t heir own business. I really con
eider that it is morally out of
joint to tattle.”
“My dear Mrs. Hill, I am hap
py to find one person that enter
tains proper ideas on this subject.
I suppose I'm foolish, but I was
thinking of that Mrs. Duer.”
“What about her, my dear?”
asked Mrs. Hill, quickly.
“You arc such a discreet person
that f am more than half tempted
to tell you the whole thing.”
"I can keep a secret.”
“Well, pray don't mention it for
the world, will you my dear, for 1
would not have it leak cut for
anything.”
“I'll not mention it to a living
soul, I give you my word.”
"Then I don't mind telling you;
the secret is this: Mrs. Duer has
been taking snuff!”
“Is it possible?”
“It is true, every word of it,’’
said the grocer's wife, gravely.
“Where did she get it?”
“From my husband's store,”
returned the informant, iu an im
pressive whisper.
“What'll happen next, I won
der?" added Mrs. Hall.
“Hush! not a word more; your
husband is coming, and I wouldn't
have it breathed to anybody for
the world!” said Mrs. Walker.
The entry of Mr. Hill put an
end to the conversation, and soon
the visitor returned home. The
moment she was out of sight,
Mrs. Hid threw a shawl about her
and went to Mrs. Fay’s.
“I can't stop but half a min
ute," she said; “I've only run in
to tell you the news—things work
so queer.”
“How you do talk! Tell me all
about it, for I'm dying to hear
something new.
“Haminertown is so dull.”
“There, what a fool I am! I j
promised upon ray honor that 1
wouldn't divulge it to the best
friend I have.”
“Lucrctia Hill!” said Mrs. Fay,
solemnly “did you ever know me
to be leaky?”
•Arabella Fay, your words car
ry conviction, and there isn't- a
woman oa earth that I’d sooner
trust. You shall know all; but if
you ever—’
“Never, never, as I hope to be
saved r said Arabella.
‘If you shall lisp it—’
After considerable more of this
nature the two worthy ladies sep
arated, ami Mrs. Fay took occa
sion. during the day, to call on
Mrs. King, the wife of the baker.
‘I'm so thunderstruck T cried
Arabella as out of breath from ex
ertiou she seated herself by the
latter.
•Why, Mrs. Fay. Iiow you
frighten me! I know something
must have happened—somebody's
sick or dead or going to he mar
ried f exclaimed Mrs. King.
•You might guess a thousand
years, and come no nearer than
the man in the union!' retorted
Araliella, confidently. ‘It’sone rtl
the most singular things that ever
happened in Haminertown. Now
I shouldn't wonder if people fowidl
out that those who pretend to so
much genii ity ain't any better
Ilian other folks.’
•You make me tremble all over.
I never felt soon the tiptop of ex-
liectation, as one may say, in ail
my life.’
•Mirandy King. I'd like to tell
you what it is, hut I'm ou my
honor not to.’
‘I shall really think hard of you
if you treat me in this way. Hav-
ent I been on my honor ever since
you knew me, and did I ever keep
anything from you that was worth
telling?'
•Bui I have sworn—’
‘Is this your friendship for me
Mrs. Fay?'
‘Mirandy King, yau have con
quered; I couldn't keep anything
from you if I should try. Give
me your ear—I mustn't speak
above my breath; Mrs. Duer has
been stealing snuff from Mr.
Walker's storeT
‘Mrs. Fay, you have given me a
powerful change. I really feel
faint—your salts dear. Who
would have thought it could be
eO.’
‘It’s just as I have said, and it
affected me dreadful; I couldn’t
have felt worse; I haven't been
easy a moment sjnee. Her Inis
band is to be pitied.’
‘So lie is. I declare! I shouldn't
wonder if he'd leave here. This
is a miserable, sinful world, really;
honest peopte have reason to be
thankful that they are kept by a
merciful providence.’
‘It wouldn't be strange if Mrs.

was the decisive reply.
‘I know you won’t credit it, hut
Mrs. Deer bas stolen nix jars of

and whatelse site's taken the Lord

‘Just such a woman for all the
wortd as I always thought she
wasT screamed Mrs. Grimes. ‘I
never did like her, and I was say
ing to my husband a few days ago
that Mary Duer was no better
than she should be. It's kind of
strange, but I've had my suspi
cions alxiut her character which
I never hinted to niy intimate

that she would steal; but so it. is.
or it came directly from Mrs.

know, seeing her husband has
been the sufferer.’
'You don't know exactly what
other things ske has taken?'
‘No, I don't; blit lea, sugar, cof- as
fee, raisins, and such tilings,
probably. The fact of the case is,
she has got a monomania, and
can't keep her hands off front any
thing.'
•It doesn't surprise me a bit for
she lias the queerest look in her
eyes.’
The two ladies discussed this
subject thoroughly before they
parted, and feit that they ought
to lie grateful that they hud been
kept from the evils into which
Mrs. Duer had fallen.
Before three days had elapsed,
it was all over the town that Mr.
Duer's wife was a confirmed thief,
there was not a thing that could
be mentioned hut she had the rep
utation of purloining it; she had !
taken silks, shawls, gloves, etc., j
from dry goods stores; rings, pins,
and chains fimn jewelers, as well
as leas, coffee, sugar, and six jars
of snuff out of Mr. Walker's store.;
This singulsr news was talked
over in all circles, and produced
universal horror in Hamnierlown.
for M r*. Duer was a lady who had
hitherto bornr an excellent char J
aeter, and had been much rcs|iect
ed. These scandalous stories at j
length reached the ears of Mr. I
Duer, tor his wife began to be!
slighted and treated with marked j

the articles enumerated as having!
