Our annual Sunday School pie
nic came off Friday. May 8th.—
There was a good crowd, and just
oodles of good rations. Tliechil
dren, the young folks, the middle
aged and the old, all enjoyed the
occasion hugely. Some of us mudr
a good large effort to catch fish for
the crowd, but found the finnv
tribe indisposed to join in the pie
me festivities. Two gentlemen
came up from Outhbert. They
arrived ubnut sunrise. (We t I
lieve they called one of them tie
“Umpire Store.”) We were, fee'
ing gloomy over our defeat in the
piacatorial business, and were
glad to see some one else try it.—
They took possession of the boat
with a get it again .if you can my-

the pond. They returned about
II o'clock so completely disgusted
that no amount of persuasion
could induce them to stay and eat
with us.

delegates appointed by the State
Convent-ions ofthe different South

in lividunl churches and mission

Thirteen stales were represent

On ".he night of the 16lh
April I took my departure from
the oi l Spanish city, the h»:nc of
the Creole, and was carried swift
ly toward Texas—llte land' and
home of ray father, and some brie
tilers and sister*. I penetrated
Texas at a place name ! Orange,
and from thence to Houston, a
city of fame—for she is to day as
-•.'and and great, to Texas com
raercc, as was the veteran Gener; 1
for whom she was named, to her
arms as a soldier and pioneer, for
the name of Gen. Sam Houston
will ever he ripe in the memory of
•Id Texans, aud will hold an il
lustrious place in the history ol
Houston, where generation* un
horn will be taught something of
hi* intrepid valor. Houston is
pierced by nine railroads, and all
doing a fine business, adding eve
ry day to her population. From
Houston to Hempstead, a kind ol
gate through which you penetrate
Texas in all directions, is quite a
beautiful little town. Austin, the
capital, is just 527 miies from New
Orleans, and is the terminus ot
the Texas Central Railroad, lying
in the valley of the Colorado river.
For beauty and thrift is unexcel
led, and boast* a population oi
15,000. I wonder that our “Bib
Arp,” has not been in this part o:
Texas, where he could have seen
as much enterprise as in any pari
of old Georgia. Around Austin
is strictly agricultural — cveiy
thing and everybody perfectly ab
sorbe l in the business, hence it is
a great success. Farther out we
strike the green pastures, where
graze cattle and sheep in immense
herds. If the country hail an an
tique, we would lie remii.d.ai for

Abraham, when journeying to' the
