life, and feeling that he has lived
long enough, puts an end to his
existence. The love sick maid of
sixteen feels life intolerable, he
cause she has some misunder
standing with her sweetheart, and
goes unbidden into the presence
of her Maker. Suicide is turned
into one great maelstrom to swal
low up all griefs, disappointments,
disgrace, pain and trouble.
It has been held that none but
a crazy person will take his own
life. We used to hold that opin
ion ourselves. The mere announce
mi nt of a suicide was sufficient
argument to convince us that lie
was beside himself, but larger oh
serration disposes us to review
that judgment. While insanity
is a frequent, cause, we doubt if il
enters as a factor into more than
a tithe of the cases that occur a!
the present rime.

who give every evidence of mental
soundnesss. The very business
way in which they go about do
stroying themselves shows their
sanity. They take death as a
matter of preference. Some suffer
pain, some arc troubled with low
spirits, some cannot hear the idea
