. The liana ways.
We' have never aeea this story
in print. It is attributed- to Co
lonel A. S. Colyar. of Tennessee,
•net is illustrative of the force ef
habit:
A well to-do old farmer, tn one
of the best counties of Middle
Tennessee, owned a large number
of slaves, nnd among them one
old darky about bis own age, and
whom lie had known all his life.
In faet, lie was one of the “old
family negroes” brought out from
Virginia. Old “Sam” was a faith
ful, docile creature, a favorite
with his master, and a sort of
n priVilrgcd character on the
plantation. The old fellow was
industrious and exemplary tn his
behavior all the year round, ex
cept during that period dating
from the time when roasting ears
begin to ripen and the earliest ap
pearanee of frost. Sam was in
variably seized at that period
with an invincible desire to ‘run
away.’ It recurred as regularly
as a fit of ‘hay fever,’ was as in
curable, and like that unpleasant
disorder could only be treated by
a change of air and locality. Sam.
understanding this, preferred to
take his case in Ins own hands
and administer the treatment in
bis own discretion. Of course, in
such a ease, the usual punishment
inflicted on ‘runawiy niggers’ was
not to be thought of. Remon
at ranee was unavailing. Sam lie
dared, ‘He jes’ couldn't lie'p liis
sef,’ and it became a settled and
understood arrangement, that lie
should go. and that the neighbor
hood should condone liis raids on
corn fields and potatoe patches.
After many such escapades, liis
old master asked him on one oc
casion, when the matter was tin
der discussion:
‘Sam, do you really enjoy run
ning away?’
•’Deed, Marse John,’ said Sam.
‘I does. Hits du inoas’ fun in dc
wurl’. Coon huntin' aint no
whars to hit.’
‘Well, then.’ said Marse John
‘just let me know the next tame
3011 take a notion to start, and
I’ll go with 3'ou and try it awhile
myself.’
Sure enough, in due season Sam
came up, saying:
‘Old Marse, de time's mighty
nigh when l's ’Merged to Jitc out.
Kf you gwine wid me, 3-011 better
begittin’ reddy, for when de time
comes I got to go quick.’
•Old Marse’ kept a bright look
out, and when Sam started he was
on hand.
They had a delightful lime.—
They fished occasional ly, caught
’possums, robbed orchards and
watermelon and potato patches,
picked blackberries for reorca
tion, and haunted I lie greenest
and shadiest nooks of the forest,
all of which Sam knew well. ‘Old
Marse’ had never enjoyed a sum
mer so much. In fact, lie was so
much pleased that regularly af
ternard lie accompanied Sain
when the latter went into annual
retreat. At length Sam died
The old master grieved for him
sincerely. He was sad also over
the reflection that his summer
pastime would in future be denied
him. But, to the amazement ol
all I-.is friends, and not le%s so to
himself, when roasting car time
came again the lit seized him as
strong as ever, and lie ran awav
b3‘ himself.—'Sola mug undo' iu

to lUecanatry. There he formed
the acquaialaece of a dog—a

became very fond of each other.
When the horse died straw waa
spread over hia body until a pit
con Id be dug. The dog eiwuied
to be disconsolate. Me raa off to
a neighbor’s house- where hia
brother had a home, and an hour
later the two (lugs were seen to
aiq rotcli the carcass. They care-
fu 1 ly removed the straw from the
body, squatted down, one at the
head and the other at the tail,
aed howled mournfully, then re
covered the remains and crept si
lently away. The workmen who
witnessed the scene were strange
ly moved by tt, and they insist
that it wss one of the saddest and
moat touching of ceremonies. The
dead was placed out of sight, but
the dog often paid a visit to the
grave. Some of the attachments
formed in the animal world are
not only strong, but marked by a
high order of intelligence.—Turf,
