The Tramp’s Xorel Expedient.
‘Beating one's way on the pas
senger trains is not an easy thing
to do on the Pacific roads,’ said a
traveler from the West, ‘but du
ring my last trip I saw a moat
novel expedient employed bjr a
tramp. Early one morning, wlied
we were pretty well up in the
mountains, I got up and dressed
and took a chair out on the plat
form l'or a breath of fresh air.
Presently the train stopped at a
water tank and I jumped down to
the ground to stretch my legs a
moment. As I walked up ahead
I was surprised to hear a snore.
'Can it be possible,’ I thought,
•that there is anybody who ean
snore loud enough to be beard
through tlie double floor of a sleep
ing car!’ The snoring seemed to
como from under the coach, and
so I resolved on a closer look.
Bending down, I glanced under
the body of the car, and saw there
a scene which struck me as being
about the oddest I had ever wit
nessed.
Tn a hammock, which he had
evidently stolen from some door
yard in California, laj‘ a tramp
sleeping soundly and snoring
noisily. The hammock was
swung under the car, close to the
floor, and one leg of its occupant
hung out and trailed rather close
to the ground. In that queer
bed his trampship had bcen rid
ing ail night, without ticket of
berth check, aud with no fear of
being compelled to join in $2 all
round for tlie benefit of the por
ter at the end of his journey.-

ther before he was discovered
and bounced, and then strode oil
iu search of food and to wait un
til night before resuming his jour
ney under another palace ear.’
Sharpers Who Got Left.
There is a sharper's game which
has been played for the last hun
dred years, and as tlie turning
point ia avarice, the game works
VJ times where it fails once. Two
sharpers set out a few weeks agtt
to play it on a Wayne county far
mer. One of them came along
one day and wanted to buy the
farm. As the farmer wanted to
sell, it was quite easy to strike n
bargain. The price was to I.e
$1,000 cash, and the man handed
over $250 to hind the bargain.
Within two days a stranger
came along and wanted the farm.
He wanted it so bad that he
couldn't stand still He found
indications of coal,natural gasand
coal oil, and lie was willing to
give $0,500 for the place. The
idea was of course, that the far
mer would be awful sick of his
first sale and seek to buy the man
off. It would pay liim to offer the
man $1,500 to release him.
The second stranger was only
out of sight when the first one
turned up again. llis mouth
watered over the prospect, but not
for long. The farmer explained
that lie had bcen offered more,
and added,—
‘But I don’t care for money.
The $4,000 is enough for me, ami
its all the old farm is worth.
When you are ready to pay the
balance we’ll make out the pa
pers.’
The purchaser offered to release
him for $1,000 dollars—$700—
$500—$300, but the farmer didn't
want to be released. He bung !•»
the bargain money, and he’s got
it yet, while the pair ot sharper*

time they think of the thickness*

‘Who’s the new boarder over
the way?’ asked Mrs. Bluff of
her husband.
‘I don’t know,’ he replied.
‘He's a nice looking man,’
continued.
‘Y'es, very nice looking?*
‘Is he married?’
‘No.’
‘IIow do you know?’
‘Oh, I know.*
‘I t bought you said yon didn't
know him.’
‘I don't,’
‘Then how do you know he isn't
married?’
•I heard him singing, ‘Heaven
is my home.’ as I came by last

One and two dollar United
