Absurd.
In the Atlanta Constitution of
the 2Ci.lt of last month, appears
an editorial in defense of the prin
ciple of protection, iu which the
writer asserts that goods in this
country are cheaper by reason of
tariff taxation, than they would
be under a policy of tree trade
He specifies clothing, and says il
can be bought cheaper here Ilian
in London; the suit he then was
wearing, all wool, cost only ten
dollars. This he declares “is the
lesull of protection,” and, vvon-
derlul to tell, in the very next sen
tence ho makes this statement:
“Take away Ibis protection and
the British manufacturer would
reduce prices so as lo drive the
Ainetican manufacturer out of
business.” Could anything be
mote absurd? And yet the Con
RlilnlioD is laboring day after
day to paltn off upon an intelligent
pulilic such peuiile and liilicu

cheapened the cost of goods, it
would fail of its intended results,

Op.c great advantage lo be derived
from a participation in these State
exhibitions is an advertisement to
the world of what can be accom

soil. Parties from other States,
or ft mil other sections of our own
Slate, seeking better lands and
more desirable homes, would be
attracted to our county, and this
would naturally tend to enhance
the value of our properly. The

last Kali, under the auspices of
the Farmers’ Club, not only prov

could do in this important mat

in many of the newspapers, and
is still mentioned in the agricul

an evidence of the interest Ran-1
dolph is taking in stock raising i
We could not well over-estimate I
the advantage that would result househc
to our county by hav ing it largely
and creditably reptescnled at the
Fair, and the more attractive the
display, the greater the advertise
ment.
Anothei great advantage to be
gained, is the spirit of generous
and healthy rivalry which it
would arouse among our farmers.
This would necessitate on a small
scale a trial of the intensive sys
tem of farfning. in which, in our
opinion, will ultimately be found
the solution of the vexed problem
of Southern agriculture. We do
not know- how much we can make
