Again we are told that the Pres

abolishment of the tobacco tax,
hut the information doesn't come

A law that forces one class of
citizens.to bear more than their

legalized robbery. That is just
what the present protective tariti

nfaclures, and in other industrial
enterprises, so that they will lie
able to pay large wages to their
employes. But does it have that
effect? Are the workingmen the
only beneficiaries of this system
of taxation? Are they benefited
by it at ail? We do net believe
that they are, and there is an
abundance of strong evidence to
sustain our position. If ten del
iars a month will enable a labor
ing man to supply himself aad
family with necessary food ami
raiment, will he be any better off
liy gelling twenty dollars a month,
when the same food and clothing
will cost him twice ‘as much as
the}' formerly did? If the effect of
the tariff is to increase the work
ingman’s wages, it also inevitably
enhances the cost of living; and
in the end he has not been bene
filed at all. The men who own
and operate the “industries” are
the ones who get the bounty.
This the esteemed Atlanta Con
stitution knows to he true; but
yet, with cbaracleiislic insineeri
ty, it prates about the poor “toil
ers” who must have the paternal
solicitude ami protection of the
government. But if it were true
that the “toilers who are employ
ed in our industries” arc actually
benefited by the tariff, would it l-e
right for the government to dis
criminate against the “toilers”
who are employed upon the farms?
Indeed, is not such discrimination
a most flagrant violation of the
plainest provisions of the funda
mental law, and a gross outrage
ii'.ion the principles of fairness and
equity? A protective tariir reduc

moment of thoughtlessness, ex

very little difference; for it Rays

The Constitution came out on
the 1 Till instant occupying an en

it declared that it favored prolee

themselves did not need any pro

What will the “Woman's Chris
linn Temperance Union” do next?
Recently at their convention in
Nashville they demanded female
suffrage, and now they are peti
tioning Congress for free whiskey
and beer. Isn't it about time for
the “Union” to disband and re
tire?
The Atlanta Constitution de
clares that the tax on tobacco ar.d
whiskey is a republican measure,
and for that reason it should be
repealed: and yet the. Constitu
tion stands on exactly the same
platform with the most ultra and
rabid black republicans of the
country.
Every day the “great Hopper”
comes out in airedilcrial advucal
ing the necessity of free whiskey,
anil urging the importance of con
tinuing the present enormous tax
on the necessary food and cloth
ing of tlie poor. The g. f. thinks
all that poor folks are fit for. is to
be taxed lor the benefit ol uior.op
olists.
Senator Joseph E. Brown in his
speech against President Clove
land’s message, declares that to
make whiskey free would bring
more relief to the poor man than
any other act of legislation. The
necessities of life, he says, are al-
oh
him.” There would be some
truth in the above statement, it it
were possible for lhc farmer to
produce on bis farm everything he
needs; hut this cannot, be done,
as everybody, except, perhaps,
the editor of the Constitution, is
well aware. Everything the far
mer buys is taxed—his clothing,
his tools and implements, his ma
chinery. fiis household and kiti h

in short nothing escapes. “The

The letter of Mr. Blaine to
chairman Jones, of the republican

the whole country; and is still a
puzzle to his friends as well as

“Unnecessary taxation is un
just taxation.” The Atlanta
Constitution quotes the -above
passage from the democratic plat
form of 1884, as an argument in,
favor of “free whiskey.” Intelli
gent people will not be imposed
upon by such contemptible twad
die. Of course “unnecessary tax
ation is unjust taxation,’’and that
is exactly why Cleveland and Car
lisle, and nine tenths of the ilem
oerntic parly to-day ere demand
ing a reduction of the tariff on
what we eat and wear, and use on
our farms and in our homes.
that the tariff affects wages is ut
terly without foundation.
But, says the Constitution, if
protection is destroyed, and ’Tapi
t»l is driven out of industrial in
vestments, what is lo become of
the vast army of woikingmen
which it employs? It will either
starve or be driven into agricul
tural pursuits.” We confess that
it would he very unfortunate for
these workingmen to be presented
with sucli an alternative—tlie ne
cessity of choosing between starv
ation and farming; but then we
would remind our able contempo
rary that after the tariff shall
have been wisely, and honestly,
and justly revised ami reduced,
by the democratic- party under
the leadership of Cleveland and
Carlisle, farming will have fewer
terrors, and more attractions.
We would take farming every
j lime rather than starvation, but
■the Constitution, evidently iu a
course not. It is plain that tii
man who'uses the salt pays the
tax. Am! so it is with every
