ior. Bill and Jim were noted as
Western desperadoes who feared
lives, several of whom were now
hot on the trail. Berry got drunk
and remained in the city several
days, taking grrat pains to exhib
it large sums of money, and gave
it away recklessly to those friends
with whom he was drinking and
carousing in the saloons, lie told
of the wonderful wealth be had
acquired in the Black Hills coun
try, but did not suv how begot it.
He took a double handful of the
twenties to the Southern bank, of
which J. AV. Carson, now of St*
Louis, was cashier for exchange.
Suspicion had already been excit
ed, and upon close examination
by Mr. Carson he found the $20
gold pieces of the same date and
make of those of the bank, and all
banks throughout the United
States had been warned lo look
out for them as having been stolen
in the express robbery. Berry
got his change, however, and left
unmolested for his home iu Calla
way county. The same afternoon
the express officials arrivej, and
authorized the writer ot this lo
print 3000 circnl irs offering $1000
reward, dead or alive, for JiiU Ber
ry ami Collins.
This set the Andrian county of*
ficers t-,woik in earnest. Harri
son Glascock was then sheriff. In
personaIJappear.mce this noted of
ficer was similar in many respects
to Berry, each being lull, straight
as an arrow, active and siuewy.—
Glascock was a man who, like the
train robber, feared nothing. The
shcritl well knew that, should Ber
ry get the drop on him, he was a
dead man. Berry also knew that
if Glascock tver drew a head on
him. il was surrender or die. On
the Saturday night after Berry's
arrival, Glascock received word
that a friend of Jlerry’s was in
town after a suit of clothes he had
ordered made. At the -muzzle of
a pistol the sheriff look the fellow
—a man named Bose Casey—into
custody, summoned a posse of half
a dozen resolute men, ordered as
many horses saddled, lied CaseV
on lo the animal he was riding,
and compelled him lo guide the
paity to the neighborhood where
Berry was in hiding. The sher
iff's crowd carried double barreled
shotguns charged heavily with
buckshot. Casey was told that if
he led them into a trap his life
would pay the forfeit. After trav
