Ex Senator Roscoe Conk ling

The Louisiana Slate election
took place last Tuesday, and re
suited in the triumph of the Dein

Thus Republican hopes in the
South are promptly "nipped in
the bud.”
The Atlanta Constitution is
very ••thick’’ with the New York
Sun. It will be remembered that
the Sun supported lleast Hutler
in 1884 in the hope of defeating
Mr. .Cleveland. It is still savage
ly opposed to our President. The

Why cannot the Repuldicans ol
Georgia, the "third parly” prohi

the repeal of the whisky tax make
a combination? They are all op
posed to the democratic party,
and the Atlanta Constitution
wonlii be the very paper to serve in
the capacity of organ for the mot

Sam Randall's little sqnnrl of

Somebody has proposed Henry
Grady 'as a suitable person to
obtained? More than once recent
ly in our own Slate, as much M
four hales have been produced up
on one acte of ’.and, and what has
been accomplished on one acre,
can he done on five, tea, or twen
ly. Air. Prim us Jones, of Bake:
county, made last year about 28
bales to the plow, and he says
that il he lives ten years longer hr
will make fifty. Whether he will
succeed, remains to be seen, but
it lias been conclusively shown
that such a result is not impossi
ble. We are utterly ignorant ol
the immense capacities of our soil,
and no doubt wonderful develop
inenls will be made within the
next ten years. The oi l plan that
was followed in the days of sla
very, and which.■ unfortunately,
has prevailed since the war, was,
and has been, to clear up and wear
out the land, ami move away, or
buy more. A result of that fully,
as everybody knows, has been to
destroy our beautiful and valua
ble forests, to waste our rich vir
gin soil, and to impoverish our
country. lint the time has come
when necessity, if nothing else,
will compel us to abandon that
course, and to turn our attention
to thr preservation and improve
ment of our old fields, many ol
which have long ago been thrown
away as worn out and exhausted.
This will he the commencement ut
ti e intensive system of fanning,
which will rapidly develop our ag
ricultural resources, and show to
the world that ours is, indeed, "a
land that flows with milk and
honey.” Air. Jones ha* already
adopted this system, and he has
succeeded in making, as before
slated, twenty eight hales of cot
ton to the plow, and we see no rea-j
son why this yield cunuol he in
creased. If he can pfoduco fifty
bales of cotton to the plow, some
body else can do the same, and if
it can be’donc. ill Maker count},
why cannot it be done in Ran
dolpli? If Georgia soil ia capable
of inch magnificent and.aslonish-
mg results, wc may reasonably-
iook for the same in all the cotton
Stales, and no doubt the time is
not far distant when ten million
hales will be an average crop o(
American cotton. There is no
ilse'lo speculate as to the effect of
such an enormous crop upon the
plica of our great staple. No
doubt it will be materially lower,
but this loss will be mere than
compensated by adjustments
which will necessarily fallow in
other mailers. This great yield
of rollon by no means involves a
neglect of corn, oata, and oilier
valuable products, which will be
grown in abundance.^ Indeed, we
helieie that we are right on the
eve of a period of unparalleled
prosperity.

Democracy la France.
Il has been conclusively dem
onstraled during the Iasi oncliun
dred years, that the people ol
: France are not capable of self-
government. Or, in oilier words.
Democracy, such as we hare in
America, is not practicable in that
country, because il is not adapted
to the peculiar characteristics ol
the French people. Aud vet it
cannot lie denied that many of
the leading citizens, and most in
fluential men, are so fanatically
attached to a Republican form ol
government, that they would pre
fer to sec Francc degraded to s
second or third rate power, rather
Ilian submit to the authority of a
constitutional monarchy, such ns
is suited to the ’government of
that restless and military glory-
loving people. But for the inter
nal feuds and dissensions that
are so bitter end deep seated in
France to day, she would he the
