Editors Enterprise k Appeal:
As the Quitman Department
has not appeared in your paper
for several issues, its correspon
dent will pardon me for sending
yon an item «r two tint may bo
ot interest to some of your read
ers. A rousing mass meeting of
Lite Democrats of Quitman county
was belli in Georgetown laslTues
day, in pursuance of a call of tlte
Executive Committee for tlte pnr-
(mse of electing delegates to the
Gubernatorial Convention, and to
consider the method of nominat
ing county officers. There Iteing
no op(msition tu Governor Gor
don, ’«ut little interest was mani
fested in the Selection of dele
gate*, but the Urge crowd showed
that the |*-ople were interested in
the manner of nominating «ur
county officers, as the follow ing
proceedings or that meeting at
test:
About one o'clock the chairman
of the Excclive Committee, Mf.
T. J. Mcthvin, called the meeting
to order, and alter stating its ob
ject, declared the election of a
chairman first in order. The name
of Col. John Lee Was offered,
when the writer proposed the
name of the Hon. '1. L- Guerrv,
Sr. The motion to make Coi.
Guerry chairman of the meeting
was supported by four fifths ol
the alrite people present, while
that in favor ol Col. Lee by about
a dozen whites and some forty or
fifty negroes. 31r. T. L. Guerrjq
Jr., raised tlte point that it was a
Democratic mass meeting, called
for the purpose of considering
questions pertaining to the inter
est of the Democratic party, in
which none but Democrats had
any right to participate, and be
therefore objected to counting Lite
negro vote; whereupon Col. Win.
Harrison took tlte floor in behalf
of allowing Lite negroes to have a
voice in the meeting. In the
course of his remarks he led the
writer to ask him if he did not say
tn the last meeting held in the
county that he would not vote for
Grover Cleveland if he was n«*m
inated upon Lite tariff issue, lie
denied the charge, when 1 reitera
ted it and proposed to prove it.
Some hot words ensued which
finally led lo a difficulty—personal
■natters in which tlte public is not
interested, ami therefore slioukl
not be intruded upon it. During
tlie confusion which followed, the j
chairman of the Executive Com- j
in it tee made several attempts lo |
adjourn the meeting, hut the poo
pie wouldn't adjourn worth a cent.
At this juncture tlte faction led
by Col. Harrison, (and the few
negroes who yet remained) with
drew from the meeting. Col.
Guerry took the chair, order was
at once restored, and the meeting
proceeded lo business. A resolu
lion instructing the Executive
Committee to call a convention for
tlie purpose of nominating a can
didate for representative, said
convention to be composed ol dele
gates from the different districts
in the county selected hy Demo
cratic mass meetings, in which
uotte but known Democrats be al
lowed to participate, was present
ed, when an amendment extending
the privilege to all who expressed
a desire to affiliate with the Dent
ocralic party in the futuie, and
who would pledge themselves lo
support its nominee, was offered
and accepted, and the resolution
as amended was carried without a
dissenting voice. The time and
place of holding the convention,
as well as the question of repre
sentation of the several districts,
was left at the discretion ot the
Executive Committee. After elect
ing a new committee, the meeting
adjourned sine die.
From a notice iu your last week’s
issue it appears that the nomina
tion for Representative will take
place 7th of August, and it is
now in order for the candidates to
announce themselves and let tlie
people know who llu-y are and
how they stand upon the impor
tant questions to be decided by
the next Legislature. Will they
do it? Will they promise not to
cast the vole uf Quitman county
