A 1968 study obtained by the Joint Center showed Mr. Nixon receiving 15 per cent of the vote in black areas of Lousiville against Hubert Humphrey. The sample areas giving Sen. McGovern the highest percentage of the vote were in Columbia, S.C. (94 per cent), Houston, Texas (93 per cent), and Charlotte, N.C. (93 per cent). In 1968, Humphrey won 98.6 per cent of the black vote in Houston. Comparable figures were not available for the other cities. Although blacks continued to support the Democratic presidential nominee, the Center noted widespread ticket-splitting in some black areas. A notable example of this phenomenon was in Chicago, where approximately 55 per cent of the voters in nine sample black wards voted for the Republican candidate for Cook County state’s attorney, By Karen Jenkins The Newt-Review will pay $1 for each question accepted for this column. WASHINGTON, Nov. 10--Florida A&M University in Tallahassee today received a $234,291 research grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Cooperative State Research Service. The grant is for research on informational tactics to reach the rural poor. The researchers, who will be directed by Dr. J.S. Dhillon, assistant professor of sociology at Florida A&M, say anti-poverty programs have been primarily directed at the urban poor--but those programs which show promise in urban areas may not be appropriate or effective in alleviating rural poverty due to differing socio-geographic and political conditions. The study will therefore be directed toward testing the effect of the more promising approaches on the rural poor. “LADY SINGS THE BLUES’ A RED HOT SMASH!" -Gene Shalit, NBC-TV ‘“LADY SINGS THE BLUES' “A FILM THAT IS A MOVIE-MOVIE THAT BOTH MOVES AND IS A JOY TO WALLOW IN ENTERTAINS!” WITH LUMP IN THROAT —Arthur Knight, Saturday Review AND A SONG IN “YOU CAN ADD DIANA YOUR HEART!” ROSS’ NAME TO OUR LIST —Judith Crist, New York Magazine OF DEFINITE OSCAR “DIANA ROSS DELIVERS CONTENDERS FOR 72!” THE KIND OF —Rona Barrett, Syndicated Columnist PERFORMANCE THAT “AN EXCITING MOVIE WINS OSCARS!” THAT HELD ME FROM Reader's Digest (EDU)—Peter Travers, START TO FINISH!” “DIANA ROSS IS NOTHING CBSTV SHORT OF DAZZLING!” “DIANA ROSS - AHH, -Rex Reed, N.Y. A toy should be made so that a child can’t pull off a wheel or break it open to leave exposed sharp edges or small parts that can be swallowed. Electrical toys can be dangerous and must be kept in good repair, he said. Electrical toys should be used under supervision and always carry the UL (Underwriters Laboratories) test label. “An ‘ electric train or race set should have a circuit breaker on the transformer, and a child should be taught the correct way to plug and unplug an electric toy,” Mr. Carter said. Play stoves, irons, and metal moulding and wood burning devices get hot and should be handled with care, he went on. “Even soft stuffed animals IT’S A GIRL! To me, it means taking the time to look around and see the love and beauty that surrounds you and giving thanks. Mr. Loftlin, our families and 1 cannot begin to express the gratitude to the many friends, many unknown, who have been very encouraging and helpful during the past year. So, on this day of Thanksgiving, we wish to extend our thanks to you, the beautiful people of Augusta, who offered of yourselves when we were in need. We only hope we can offer as much to you. God bless you all. (In Memory of Little Miss Tracy Loftlin) and dolls may have button eyes that can be pulled off and swallowed. Wire used to form an ear on an animal can poke through the fabric and inflict scratches, and a poorly made doll can come apart at the seams and expose the stuffing, which youngsters might put in their mouths. Mr. Carter urged parents to take the time when they shop to examine the toys they plan to buy. “Try to match the toy to the interests and abilities of the child,” he advised. “Keep in mind how your child will use the toy. Is it durable enough to stand up under rough play, and what are the possibilities of misuse? Although consumer groups have brought dangerous toys to public attention, the primary responsibility to insure that a toy is safe is still that of the parents.” Accutron Deep Sea |sa| _ - /"“HhSbA The most accurate underwater watch a diver BjßaMjSßjy can wear!
