BLACK MARINES
TAKE TO THE AIR
Although Marine pilots first
took to the air in 1912, there
were no black aviators in the
Corps until about 20 years ago.
Today about one out of every
three black Marine officers is a
flyer.
Among this growing number
are three pilots at various
stages in their careers who
agree that the Corps offers
experience, training and
prestige hard to find elsewhere.
And, contrary to popular
belief, they all feel that good
pilots are made, not born.
Only one, Ist. Lt. Andre
Summers of Washington, D.C.,
grew up wanting to be a pilot.
The other two, Capt. Donald
G. Ringgold of Detroit, and
Ist. Lt. Emerson F. Carr of
Minneapolis, were in their late
teens or early twenties when
they decided that a pilot’s life
in the Marine Corps was their
thing.
“Flying had always been my
goal,” says 25-year-old
Summers. “I can still
remember the thrill I used to
get when my mother would
take me to the airport to watch
the planes take off and land.”
Summers’ father, now
deceased, had a great deal to
do with his joining the Marines.
In World War 11, the elder
Summers had been among the
first to integrate the Corps;
service career. Miss Barry
stated that she left the civil
service in 1944 on the
threshold of an appointment to
the position of administrative
assistant because the franchise
that operated the cafeteria at
Oliver General Hospital would
not serve Blacks.
Other students to appear in
the next published edition of
Who’s Who among American
High School Students are
Josephine Ruffin, Bernestine
Burley, Cheryl Cooper, Diane
Down, Tilman McDaniel, Nieta
Scott, Deborah Young and
Harvey Boyd.

and, even then, he had been in
a segregated unit. Still, he held
a high regard for the training
he received.
Summers was graduated
from Springarn High School in
Washington where he was
senior class president, captain
of the football team and
president of the varsity club.
Next stop in his goal toward
becoming a pilot was Morgan
State College in Baltimore,
where he received a degree in
Business Administration. His
first real taste of the military
also came at Morgan State when
Summers became the
lieutenant colonel of the Army
ROTC unit there. However, he
decided to join the Corps
because it gave him a chance to
fly.
He is stationed at Cherry
Point, N.C., and is a co-pilot of
the huge and powerful
Hercules C-130 aircraft. The
C-130’s main Marine tasks are
aerial refueling of jets and
long-range transportation of
troops or cargo. The plane has
a range of 8,000 miles and
cruises at approximately 400
miles per hour. It has a crew of
five.
Between flights, Summers
and his wife, Bernedette,
entertain themselves at the
base’s many recreational
facilities.
Capt. Donald Ringgold also
flies a C-130 out of Cherry
Point and his current duties
include administrative flights
for the wing staff and piloting
his commanding general’s
aircraft. He is also the
Operations Officer for his
squadron.
Ringgold, however, didn’t
decide to become a pilot until
he was in college, nor did he
begin his career by flying
conventional aircraft.
His first tour was as a
helicopter pilot in Vietnam

where he flew supply, medical
and assault missions. When
Ringgold returned to the
States, he requested additional
training to become qualified to
fly the C-130’s.
On a second tour in
southeast Asia, Capt. Ringgold
flew missions in Marine C-130’s
and visited Taiwan, Thailand,
Hong Kong, Japan and Guam.
When not flying or spending
time with his wife, Charlotte,
and their five-year-old
daughter, Capt. Ringgold uses
his spare hours either hunting
or fishing. The hunting is
usually for deer and squirrel
that abound on and near the
base. He also owns a 19-foot
fishing boat and sometimes
goes nearly fifty miles out into
the Atlantic, searching for king
fish and blue fish.
First Lt. Emerson Carr pilots
an Intruder A-6 aircraft out of
Cherry Point on a different
kind of mission. The A-6 is the
Marine’s subsonic, all-weather
attack aircraft.
As pilot, Carr handles the
aircraft and all
communications. Beside him
sits a navigator who uses
sophisticated equipment
designed to locate, track and
attack targets at night and
under all weather conditions.

Central High School where he
was an all-state defensive

play an important part of his
life. At the Naval Academy, he
played varsity ball as a middle
guard and middle linebacker.
Upon graduation, Carr
elected to become a Marine
aviator and after flight training
he received his wings.
“I enjoy flying to the
fullest,” says Carr. “Not many
people realize it but in sheer
numbers and strength, Marine
Air is bigger than most of the
world’s tactical air forces.”
There are several ways to
become a Marine Aviator,
according to Carr. He advises
those willing to learn more
about these career
opportunities to contact a local
Marine recruiter since the
Marine Corps is currently
undergoing an intensive
recruitment campaign to
attract more blacks and others
to join officer training
programs.
Carr, like his fellow officers
at Cherry Point, enjoys a
relaxed life off duty. He and
his wife, Frances, have one son.
While the younger Carr takes
up a good portion of their
time, the two still find time to
play golf and participate in
other pasttimes offered at the
Marine Corps facility.
