LIONS SHOW IMPROVEMENT BUT FALL
The Paine Lions returned to the hardwood following the
holiday brteak, but the lay-off did not help the team win its fifth
game of the season. Instead, the Lions absorbed loss number
seven to Barber Scotia College. Coach Ernest Tolbert, however,
may have gained some consolitation since the team played an
inspired brand of basketball, losing to the once-defeated North
Carolina eagers by only three points. The winners came to town
with a 10-1 record, which no doubt had much to do with the
game being sent back to North Carolina via radio.
Since the team showed marked improvement in its play against
the BS team, Coach Tolbert has been working very hard to get it
ready for its up-coming game with Albany State Saturday night.
State, as usual, is bringing a strong team to Augusta, which makes
a strong team effort necessary if any semblance of a victory is
expected.
EAGLES DOING THE UNNATURAL . . . LOSING
At the outset of the current basketball season, the T.W. Josey
Eagles was tabbed as the team to beat in the local area. The
team’s superior height and shooting ability had got them tabbed
this way. But in recent weeks James Roundtree’s charges have
been losing, and this is unnatural for a “Tree” team.
The capping event in the series of down-the-hill actions of the
Eagles was the loss this week to Lucy Laney, a team that had
tasted nothing but defeat in seven games. And the loss to Laney
came on the heels of a defeat at the hands of the Patriots of
West side.
The genial Eagles’ coach is not satisfied with the recent play of
his boys, and there is certain to be a shakeup in the composition
of the starting five from this point on.
“FLU BUG” DECKS WILLIAMS ... AND PATRIOTS
The Westside Patriots met the Glenn Hill Spartans this week
and failed to take care of business in their normal fashion -
winning. The unheralded Spartans proceded to upset the
high-flying Patriots in one of the early season shockers.
As the Patriots were bowing to the lowly Spartans, it was very
obvious that they missed their “board-sweeper,” Earl Williams.
The lanky Westside star was grounded with the flu, thus leaving
the team without his play on the boards and his point-making
ability.

New York Jet running back
Emerson Boozer appeared on
the NBC “Today Show”
Wednesday with ex-grid star
Tucker Fredrickson, and the
Jets’ team physician. The topic
was “Football and Football
Injuries.”
Boozer suffered injuries as a
high star at Augusta’s Lucy
Laney High and with the Jets
that threatened to end his
Athletic career. According to
the Jets physician five athletes
undergo surgery each year on
the average professional team.
Most of the injuries of the
athletes are attributed to the
new synthetic turf as well as
the violence of the game which
Vince Lombardi once called
“controlled brutality.”
Boozer said football is not
controlled brutality. It is
controlled economics. A
football player’s salary is based
on NOTORIETY. “If he is a
defensive ball player he gets
very little publicity and the
only way to get that kind of
publicity is to be rough and
violent. These guys need that
publicity and to get that
publicity they got to put
somebody on their back,”
Boozer commented.
