Is My Beat
By Joey Sasso
National Black News Service
Observations in Covering the
Night Beat: Billy Eckstine is
one of America’s top singing
favorites after some two
decades, headlines in the new
show at Jules Podell’s
Copacabana.
Eckstine, professionally and
affectionately referred to as
“Mr. 8.,” is as charismatic a
performer as there is in
business. He doesn’t use any
gimmicks when he sings. His
audiences, both men and
women in it, are captivated by
him.
The letter “B” is not only
his first initial but it also stands
for his baritone voice. It
further stands for the last
initial of Al Bell, president of
Stax Records, for whom Billy
records.
Eckstine has starred in the
top cases around the country
and has appeared on the
leading TV shows. His
professional career begins as a
singer and emcee in night clubs
in Buffalo, N.Y., Detroit, and
Chicago.
Billy’s singing began at the
age of 11 in a church choir.
Originally he was hired as a
vocalist for the band of Earl
(Fatha) Hines. For five years,
Billy sang with Hines’ band as
well as playing the trumpet
occasionally.
While with Hines, he helped
other talents to get into the
band including Charlie Parker
and Sarah Vaughn. After
leaving Hines, Eckstine formed
his own group with Bud
Johnson.
This union lasted four years
and featured various times the
remarkable collection of jazz
and “bop” musicians ever
assembled. Some of the artists
who played in Eckstine’s band
included Dizzy Gillespie, Fats
Navarro, Miles Davis, Denny
Dorham, Gene Ammons,
Dexter Gordon, Lucky
Thompson, Leo Parker, John
Malachi, Art Blakey and
Tommy Potter. We describe
Eckstine as a “pivotal figure in
jazz history.” Billy is now
being produced on records by
Soul Master Isaac Hayes.
NEW LP FOR
THUNDERBIRDS
Jazz trumpeteer Billy Ford
and The Thunderbirds, now
featured, at Joe’s Pier 52
Showboat Bar, West 52nd
Street is coming out with a
new LP, “Our First Time,” for
Susal Records, late this month.
After the show we toasted
Billy and the boys with a shot
of Teacher’s Scotch to
celebrate the occasion and wish
him good luck.

GODFREY CAMBRIDGE
HEART ATTACK IS JUST A
RUMOR
Godfrey Cambridge, who
just left the Motion Picture
Country Home Hospital after a
stay of six months, told me he
did NOT have a heart attack,
despite what we have heard. He
was more than 100 pounds
overweight and it had to come
off.
At the Harold Robbins’
party Godfrey told me that
Frank Sinatra now insists upon
sending him to Houston for a
check-up by a heart specialist
just to make 100 per cent sure
there is nothing wrong with
Godfrey’s heart.
Cambridge landed in the
hospital after passing out.
When he opened his eyes,
Frank was standing at his
bedside telling him not to
worry about a thing.
During the six months,
Sinatra made many visits to the
M.P. Home to see Godfrey,
who says he will never forget
how marvelous Sinatra has
been.

disappeared and they want to

LEON ISAAC ON ROOM 222
Young actor Leon Isaac
(he’s married to the beautiful
dancer-singer Jayne Kennedy,
who’s on the Dean Martin
show) has been cast in a
segment of “Room 222” Leon
and Jayne are two of the
nicest, most together people in
Hollywood.
It’s great to see a marriage
where both parties are involved
in show business, yet have
managed to bypass the ego
trips and facades which snares
nearly all other show business
couples. Here’s hoping they
never lose what they’ve got.
PEARL BAILEY TAKING IT
EASY
If you don’t see too much of
Pearl Bailey these days, it’s
because she’s finally listening
to the advice of doctors and
friends, and taking things slow
and easy.
Inside TV
Hollywood people are
talking about: The fact that
Flip Wilson’s popularity at
NBC has reached a new low.
According to a young man who
works as an NBC page, Flip
passes him a dozen times a day
and doesn’t even sepak.
This same page told us that
he and three other pages at
NBC gave Flip a birthday card

Kappa Chapter, Tau Gamma
Delta Sorority, Inc., will

Junior High School Band and

will take place on March 23,
1973 at 8:00 P.M. in the

One of the highlights of the

The A.R. Johnson Band is
under the direction of Mr.
and Flip didn’t even thank
them. Also, the crew on Flip’s
show complained that he
wouldn’t even acknowledge
their presence even though
they’ve been working on the
show for two years.
Finally, someone
approached Flip’s personal
manager, Monty Kay, who in
turn introduced Flip formally
to the crew.
Even the shoeshine man fails
to get a “hello” out of Flip.
Says the page: “Flip has gained
his popularity because of the
characters he portrays, but in
real life he won’t even talk to a
Brother when he passes them
in the halls of NBC.
We see guys like Sid McCoy
(producer of the “90 Minutes”
talk show hosted by
Cannonball Adderly), Redd
Foxx and Demond Wilson and
they always speak. But not
Flip.”
The pages say that Foxx is
easily the nicest star at NBC
and is never too busy to stop
and chat, or at least say
“hello.”
