Trial date for the sixty seven Tuskegee Mayor, OEO Official Charged With Bribery TUSKEGEE, Ala. - Johnny Ford, the black mayor of this city, and Taft Holland, an official of the Office of Economic Opportunity in Washington, have been served with bribery warrants obtained by the community action agency director here last week. P.G. Tunde Balogun, a native of Nigeria and the agency director, charge that Holland offered Ford more indicated for gambling violations has been set for June 18, 1968. Dr. Leon Sullivan, the founder and head of OIC said in a statement last week: “This is our country, too, and we want to help it. I believe in America. This is my country. I am a militant patriot, I have done everything in a positive manner. This word from Philadelphia: “Following a raid by agents of the Treasury Department’s Alcohol, Tobacoo and Firearms Division and Philadelphia policemen, three men were arrested in that city last week and were taken to Washington, D.C. for police lineups in connection with the January 18th murders of seven Hanafi Muslems. Balogun contended that Holland’s action was intended to give the mayor who was elected last year, more control over antipoverty funding and, thus, constituted a bribe. Ford, who was released on SSOO bond, said the charge was “just another silly step taken by a few radicals here in seized in the raids and a variety of charges were filed against the men, who were taken to Washington for possible identification by witnesses to the slayings. Several witnesses have tentatively identified the suspects as persons seen fleeing the area of the Hanafi headquarters on the day of the murders. Arthur also tells me he is having trouble obtaining the our community who have already caused too much trouble.” Holland, who posted SI,OOO bond, was reportedly in Tuskegee to confer with Ford on a “city/county human services program” which was to be funded by OEO. Ford said OEO officials in Washington contacted him several months ago about taking over poverty programs after there were reports of “misappropriations” of funds. “All we were doing was trying to keep the city from losing these funds which we badly need,” Ford said, adding that the U.S. Attorney’s office in Montgomery told him he was on “sound legal ground in conferring with Holland on the status of the local program.” Balogun charged that Ford had been promised $1 million on one occassion and over $600,000 on another if the city took control of several poverty programs. Oliver JAMES “POP EYE” WILLIAMS SLAIN Mrs. Louise Lattimore of 1718 Douglas Street, reported late Saturday that two men had been fighting in the rear of her house. Williams, identified as “Pop Eye” fell to the ground. He was pronounced dead on arrival by coroner M.T. Woodward at University Hospital. As of this writing no charges have been filed. TWO BROTHERS, WIFE, ARRESTED IN CLOTHES COMPANY ROBBERY BY FBI. AGENTS A federal grand jury in Atlanta indicted two commerce, Georgia brothers and the eldest brother’s wife on charges of hijacking shipments of clothing, relabeling it and then stocking the thousand dollars in stolen merchandise at stores in Smyrna and Maysville, S.C. The brothers Ambrey Dewitt Allen Jr., 50, and Aubrey Joe Allen, 46, have criminal records for auto theft and bootlegging dating back to 1949. A.D. Alien’s 28-year old wife, Nancy Ann, is also charged. According to the indictment, when the two men were arrested, FBI agents Hey Dewitt “Canon” Williams - here it is, “You’re a super salesman,” and for those that don’t know - try him out at Richard’s Buick. Don’t see much of Richard Glenn these days - Hey Rich! Where are you? The civil Service Commission of Augusta ruled (fantastically) that a moustache is a fire hazard. This has to be a first among all the zillion ways recorded to keep a Black man down. (For more info regarding this ■ matter see this week’s editorial.) found $7,600 worth of men’s underwear, $24,000 in men’s trousers, and $51,000 worth of men’s shirts in their possession in an automobile belonging to A.D. Allen. Agents also found in Aubrey Alien’s possession a radio scanner capable of monitoring police radios, several revolvers, a rifle, ammunition for guns, ski masks, gloves and a bolt cutter. The indictment says the defendents used walkie talkies, Citizen band radios and the police” scanners to keep in touch with each other to avoid detection by police. The theft count charged the trio with stealing 6,672 men’s shirts, worth SBO,OOO in a shipment from Raycord Manufacturing Company of Spartenburg, S.C. to Bobbie Brooks, Inc. in Morrow, Georgia. In 1964 A. D. Allen was convicted to seven years for auto theft. He was described at the time as the ringleader in a million dollar car theft operation in North Georgia. A.J. Allen was sentenced to five years for auto larceny in 1965. $193 SOCIAL SECURITY CHECK STOLEN Jim Lockhart of 1650 McCauley Street said his social security check for $193.10 was stolen from the glove compartment of his car parked at his house. The incident occured between 9:00 am and 10:00 am Sunday morning. Thirteen plastic bags with cannabis traces were found at the Hebert Lane address. Howarth was arrested following an, “extensive investigation” on the basis of confidential information. He was also charged with possession of a bottle of unlabeled drug. TWO ARRESTED STEALING IN JAIL PARKING LOT Dennis J. Smith, 21, and Leonard J. Wright, 19, were arrested in the Augusta Police Department parking lot, and charged with stealing hub caps and lights from civilian cars. Police reported a Break-in at Mark Walters Fancy Foods, 1101 Broad Street Tuesday. An estimated $125 worth of cigarettes were stolen. Another burglary reported at the Augusta Electric Motor Company, where SSOO in copper wire was taken. The location was reported as 8, Ninth. Two reports of home break-ins included 2922 Pan Handle Road, the home of W.C. Screws. Police discovered a .32 caliber pistol and $3lO taken. The second break-in was at tire home of Willie L. White, where a radio tape player valued at $135 was reported missing. EX-BOUNCER; FOOTBALL PLAYER FINED-PROBATED Edward Ramon Jr., an ex-bouncer and Augusta Eagle football player, was fined SSOO and given twelve months probation in connection with The beating of his estranged wife, and another man at her apartment last August 1972. Ramon was convicted by a Richmond County Superior Court Jury that recommended the conviction be treated as a misdemeanor.
