The Augusta News-Review - June 14, 1973, PAINE | Police Report I CO-ORDINATS WORKSHOP HUSBAND SOUGHT IN WIFE’S DEATH IN CUSTODY OF AUGUSTA POLICE Jack Graham, who was wanted in connection with the shooting death of his thirty-three year old wife, was brought back to Augusta Monday June 11th. Augusta police had sought to bring Graham back from the Dekalb County Jail last week, but bizarre events prevented them. One report had Graham at the Grady Hospital as a result of slashing his wrist and throat with a razor blade while another report had him being transfered from the Veterans Administration Hospital to Grady Hospital suffering from an overdose of drugs. At any rate none of these reports could be subtantiated. Graham’s wife, Mrs. Burma West Graham, of 2220 Baxter Court was shot once through the chest with a .22 caliber rifle that fired a long rifle hollow point bullet that went completely through her body. She was pronounced dead on arrival at University Hospital. Mrs. Graham had just alighted from an automobile with a male riend at 1006 Milledge Rd. When another automobile pulled up and a man fired a rifle striking Mrs. Graham. The male friend wrestled the rifle from the man who then drove off. The Grahams were estranged. PRISONER ESCAPE ATTEMPT FOILED BY HOSPITAL SECURITY GUARD Jerry Dixon, 23, made a try for freedom from the Talmadge Hospital Prison Wing last Saturday. Dixon somehow had obtained a gun and was holding a housekeeping attendant as a hostage, when he ran into hospital security guard, Chester Guy who was making his rounds. Guy, according to reports was told to lie on the floor and was in the process when he pulled his own revolver on Dixon and subdued him. Dixon was sent to the hospital from the Reidsville State Prison for surgery. Georgia Natural Gas Company Page 2 Brannon, 20, of the same address; Horace Hartmen Howell, 21, and William Arnold Oliver, 21, of 263 Japonica; were arrested following a report from North Augusta police that armed robbers had crossed the Thirteenth Street bridge into Augusta. Richmond County deputies spotted a car matching the description reported and followed it to a local resturant where they arrested the four and found eleven bags of marijuana in their possession. The call from North Augusta reported an armed robbery that occured at the Heidelberg Inn where Raymond Earl Ryan of Route 2 Box 15-A, was beaten and robbed of $lB7. AUTO STOLEN BY RIFLE WEILDING DUO Two men walked up to William Robinson of 1675 Floyd Street and pulled a pistol and rifle on him, asked for the keys to his car and drove off. Robinson reported the car as a green 197 Volkswagen with Pennsylvania license plates. S3OO CARPET - $5lO MOTOR STOLEN Allan Woodward of 4103 Sappin Lane reported to Richmond County deputies that S3OO worth of carpet was stolen from a home under construction at 3018 Eagle Drive. A boat motor and gas tank worth $5lO, were reported missing from a boat in the yard of Bennie Johns of 2992 Shelby Drive. STEREO - TV - NECKLACE AND SHOES STOLEN Mamie Rivers of 1502 Chestnut Street reported the theft of a television set, a rhinestone necklace, a stereo set and a pair of shoes valued at $546, from her home. A television set worth $l2O was taken from the home of Brenda Jennins of 3411 Luce Street. CARTER ELECTRIC BROKEN INTO $2,640 CHECKS AND ITEMS MISSING Some $740 in merchandise and almost $1,900 in payroll checks were taken from the Carter Electric Company at 167116 Olive Road. C.E. Carter of Martinez reported the theft last Friday. Paine College is coordinating a summer intensive training workshop June 10-14 through the Student Services Institute of the United Board for College Development. The workshop which will be conducted on the Morehouse College campus in Atlanta is for representative teams from 15 predominantly black private and church related colleges and universities and will involve approximately 100 participants. Dr. Lucius H. Pitts, Paine’s president will be the speaker at the banquet which will conclude the institute. Typically, the representative team from each campus will consist of the Dean of Students, Associate Deans for Men and Women, Residence Hall Counselors, and Campus Student Leaders. He said someone broke a lock off of the front door and ransacked the office. $586 TAKEN FROM LOCAL MOTEL Two different robberies netted theives the following; $435.90 taken from the room of A.L. Leßlanc of Pasedena, Texas. The money had been in a dresser drawer. slsl was reported robbed from the wallets of Mrs. T.M. Bradford, Jason Bradford, and Mark Luce of Mobile, Alabama. The robbery also occured from the same motel. MAN SHOT IN EAR WITH SHOTGUN John E. Mabli of 2 Q Keystone Apartments was shot in the left ear, left arm and left shoulder by a shotgun as he drove down Green Street. He was allegedly shot by Cecil C. Bragg of 2009 Green, who was arrested and charged with ggravated assualt with intent to murder. MAN ARRESTED ALLEGEDLY SHOOTING AT POLICE Andrew Davenport of Fleming Avenue was arrested last Sunday and charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and was held in connection with shooting in a situation involving Augusta Police. Another man, companion of Davenport was also arrested. Pierce E. CHARLES ATLAS STATUE STOLEN Residents of 2808 Wheeler Road reported to Augusta Police that someone took a five hundred pound, $225 statue of Charles Atlas from their lawn. TV STOLEN AT APARTMENTS Jerome Sullivan, of Apartment 291, Peachtree Gardens, said someone entered his house Friday and stole a $69 black nd white television set. Clay Presley reported to Augusta Police that someone stole a bank money bag from his auto, while it was parked in front of a local doughnut shop. The bag had S6O in it. SIOOO WILD WEST GUN STOLEN Richmond County deputies received a report that a trailer had been broken into on Highway One near Spirit Creek. Larry Hilson who owns the trailer told deputies an old western pistol worth SIOOO and $390 in other weapons were taken Wednesday. WOMAN RAPED WHILE SLEEPING A West Augusta woman told Richmond County deputies she was sleeping when she felt a hand being put over her mouth and nose and a man told her not to scream. He assaulted her sexually then left. The woman told Residence Halls as Living-Learning Centers, Research and the Student Personnel Professional, and Accreditation and Student Services. The goal of the Student Services Institute is the fuller development of “student oriented” services based upon the concept of “team” administration and providing continuing in-service training for its member institutions. MAN SHOT IN MOUTH -CHARGED IN MURDER OF ROOMMATE Ronald Jones has been charged with murder in the shooting death of Hazel Bennings, Monday. Jones and Bennings both of 907 9th Street, apartment 4, got into a heated argument, when Mr. Bennings produced a gun and shot Jonds in the mouth. He laid the gun on a table where Jones picked it up and shot at Mr. Bennings four times hitting him twice. Bennings was pronounced dead on arrival at University Hospital. MAN ATTACKED BY FIVE MEN BEATEN AND ROBBED OF $155 Issac Bradley of 203 Bowles Road, was attacked by five men and was beaten and robbed of his S4O watch and $155 from his wallet. The attack occured at 2124 Second Ave. where Bradley was visiting. JUVENILES ARRESTED STEALING ICE CREAM Two thirteen year old juveniles were arrested late Monday June 11 th, for stealing ice cream from a truck on West Walton Way. Authorities said the two are also being held by juvenile authorities in connection with a recent rash of burglaries. jV’ |i Mr \« ‘Vi >x- •■■■ James H. Hill Claim Supervisor James H. Hill was recently elected to the position of Claims Supervisor of The Pilgrim Health & Life Insurance Company. W.S. Hornsby, Jr., President of Pilgrim, stated that Hill has worked in just about all phases of field operation and is well prepared to take on this new responsibility. Hill, a native of Athens, Georgia, was very active in civic and community affairs before coming to Augusta. He is married to the former Miss Annie Williamson and they have two sons. Leadership Study Approximately 200 clergymen and laymen, adults and young people are gathering this week on the Paine College campus for five days of study in the Georgia Leadership Education School. The theme for theconference which is under the direction of the General Board of Christian Educationarid the Georgia Conferences of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church (CME) is “Christians and the Responsible Use of Power”. Delegates from across the state and some 35 - 50 representatives from local churches will participate in activities culminating Thursday night in a communion and dedication service in which Bishop P. The school was attended by more than 30 representatives throughout the country. The Company’s Public Relations office learned that J. T. Lawrence finished first in the class. promoted to Officers’ Status. Mills joined Pilgrim in 1959 as a debit manager and in that same year he was promoted to Assistant Manager of the Augusta District. In 1960 he was promoted to manager of the Savannah, Georgia District. There he served until last year when he was promoted to the position of Lay Underwriter. Mills, a native Augustan attended the local public schools and did further study at Paine College and Dillard University in New Orleans, La. He has an honorable discharge from the United States Navy and in addition to other things, he is a member of the Bethel AME Church. Robert Mills is married to the former Miss Carolyn Vinson of Savannah and they have one son, Todd.
