The Augusta News-Review - June 21, 1973, s By Mark T. Souiheriand National Black News Service K.C. Jones, the former Boston Celtic star, last week resigned as coach of the ABA s San Diego Conquistadors in the first year of a three-year contract. However, the news in the Washington area is that the 41-year-old Jones, who played quard with the Celtics 13 years during which he was on eight NBA championship teams, this week became tire new manager of the Capital (formerly Baltimore) Bullets. Jones met with the Bullets’ vice president Jerry Sachs in Chicago about a month ago. When asked about the possibility of his filling the now-vacant Bullets coaching slot, Jones said, “yes, I’d like that. They have a very fine club. They have a lot of good players. 1 saw them against the Knicks in the playoffs.” *** * * Washington Redskins Coach George Allen did a little more wheeling and dealing last week and came up with Dave Robinson, former Green Bay Packer linebacker who was traded to last year’s NFC champs for a No. 2 draft choice in January, but who had previously said “no” to a determined and persistent Allen. Robinson had been named director of minority affairs for a brewing company and said he believed that position offered him and his family more security than football. But Allen turned a deaf ear and last week announced that Robinson an All-American at Penn State and the Packers’ No. 1 draft choice in 1963, had been signed to a reported $90,000-a-year, three year contract with the ‘Skins. The 32-year-old Robinson, who was tapped for the Pro Bowl in 1967, 1968, and 1970 and who was the most valuable player in the 1968 game, will replace Jack Pardee, who retired after the Super Bowl game and became a Redskin coach. And because of them a National League pennant will hopefully fly over Atlanta Stadium in a few short years to come. The duo in Atlanta comes in the form of the Braves’ two Robinson said, “I found you just can’t erase the challenge and the thrill of competition over night. It stays with you and you want to get back in there. So I’m going to take another crack at it with a team I think has great potential.” When the left linebacker moves to Washington, he will have to get a new jersey, for No. 89 is already ably-filled by former N.Y. Jet star Verlon Biggs. ***** According to reports published by the Boston Herald American, new NBA Seattle Super Sonics coach Bill Russell owes the Federal Government $34,430 in back taxes for 1969 and 1970, the Internal Revenue Service has placed a lien on his Reading, Mass, home, and the Small Business Administration is seeking payment of a portion of a $90,000 loan made to the former Boston Celtic and his wife for the purchase of a restaurant which later failed. Two weeks ago, Russell had rapped the city of Boston and the local media for “racist” treatment of black players in covering sports. ***** Chicago White Sox first baseman Dick Allen received 27,628 votes last week in early balloting for the major league All Star Game, thus giving him the second highest Boston Red Sox catcher Carlton Fisk got 28,354 votes total. Also scoring high were Kansas City first baseman John Mayberry (23,496); Cookie Rojas (26,715), Kansas City second baseman; Reggie Jackson (Oakland outfielder) 24,984; and Kansas City outfielder Amos Otis. Starting teams for the July 24 game in Kansas City will ba announced July 16-17. I 111 JOHANNSEN’S | 12th & Reynolds Trophies Engraving Sporting Goods adidas PUMAS Wilson Pro-Ked Converse ALL STARS Shoes For All Athletics Eddies -- Eddie Robinson and Eddie Mathews. Eddie Robinson was the man named to replace Paul Richards in running the team’s baseball operation last summer, and Mathews is the man that Robinson named to manage his team on the field. The fruits of these men’s labor came slow. A sputtering start of the season, however, was followed by the hottest streak in baseball during early June. The Braves now seem to be on the right track to a pennant contender. Who are the two men that now lead the Braves? Robinson is a soft-spoken former big league star, who was selected as the best first baseman in the history of the Chicago White Sox. After his playing career, he learned the trade of developing big league talent while working in the farm departments of the Orioles, Astros and Athletics, he then joined the Braves in 1968 as head of Atlanta’s farm system, developing young stars like Ralph Garr, Dusty Baker, and Rob Gilbreath. When he was named director of player personnel of the Braves in June of 1972, he wasted no time in assessing the situation. “I knew I was completely aware of all phases of our operation in player development,” he recalled, “but I hadn’t spent much time with the major league players .. .except for the ones who came up from our minor league operation. “So when I first got the job, I spent the rest of the 1972 season following the major league club to see how things were done. It has taken a lot of evaluating and a lot of meetings to draw everyone in the organization together, but now we all know what each other’s jobs are.” “A tean must have a winning attitude to be a consistent contender,” Robinson said. “The team’s manager is the big man in developing attitude, and I think Eddie Mathews is perfectly suited to do that job. We both want to see our players taking pride in doing a good job every day.” Mathews was also a star as a player. He is the all-time third baseman of the Braves and was coach of the team before being named manager last season. “Building a baseball team is like putting together the pieces of a puzzle,” Mathews says. “First, you have to collect all the right parts, and then it’s a matter of fitting them together into a precise unit. “If I didn’t think this is a talented Braves team, I wouldn’t say so,” he continued. “I know we have the talent and I know the players are giving their best effort, and I am confident we’ll be a winner. Our players are playing the game like men, and with that attitude we’ll be all right.” TEPEE TOPICS: The jiggest homestand of the year runs from June 28th through July sth in Atlanta. Baseketball now has four head coaches (Russell, Al Attles, K.C. Jones and Ray Scott), and two general managers (Russell and Wayne Embry). Examine for a moment a couple of myths used by baseball and football for not probably be enshrined with the immortals in the future. The fact that all of these men played in All-Star games doesn’t tell the whole story. Many were personally responsible for victories by their teams. Ken Boyer, for instance, played in ten All-Star games, but his 1956 appearance stands out above the rest. He went 3-for-5 with the bat and in the field broke the hearts of the American Leaguers with three sizzling plays as the National League won 7-3. Feller, who pitched three no-hit games during his career, was the hero of the 1939 All-Star Game. He entered the game in the sixth inning with the bases loaded and one out. He retired the side and went on to allow only one hit in the last three frames. Rosen was the star of the 1954 game. He whalloped two successive home runs before the home crowd in Cleveland and drove in a total of five runs as the American League won 11-9. Pete Runnels dealt the surprise of the 1962 game. The Boston infielder was not noted as a power hitter. He had, in fact, hit only 45 round-trippers in 12 years in the majors. He connected against Art Mahaffey with one hiring blacks in management (local writers and radio personalities were quick to echo the same statements). (1) It’s not the hiring of a ‘Negro’ it would be the problem of firing him. FACT: Errol Lloyd and Len Wilkens were fired, and not one cry of racism was voiced. Seattle fans objected to the Wilkens dismissal, but not in the third inning to lead the American League to a 9-4 victory. Fans of the great Cleveland teams of the mid 1950’s and of the Yankee pennant winners should be delighted by the Braves Old-Timers Game this year. Five of the great Cleveland stars and three of the Yankees are represented. The Old-Timers Game at Atlanta Stadium is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. on June 30th with the Braves game against the Giants following at 6 p.m. Tickets can be purchased through the mail. Field level seats are $4 each and upper level $3 for adults and $1.50 for youngsters (12 and under). Checks should be made payable to the Atlanta Braves and sent to Braves Mail Order Ticket Department, Box 4064, Atlanta. Ga. 30302. Enclose an additional 50 cents for handling. TEPEE TOPICS: The Braves annual fireworks extravaganza is coming up on July 3rd after the Braves game against the Astros. The fireworks show, which is the largest aerial show of its type in the nation, features hundreds of rockets up to 12 inches in diameter exploding during a 20-minute period. This type of show normally on racial grounds. (2) They don’t possess leadership ability. I’d like to know what leadership qualities are missing from such players as Frank Robinson and Maury Wills? That such heroes as Solly Hemus, Frank Quilisi, Ed Kasko, Chuck Tanner, and Yogi Berra somehow have developed? None of these men as donown as academic giants. Paint them black and they’d be unemployed before the ink dried on this paper. Public voicing of racial inferiority is no drawback. We all remember the manager who, a few years ago, stated he had only seen three lasts 45 minutes but will be crammed into a 20-minute period to make it even more spectacular. Fans will be allowed to leave the Stadium at the end of the game and sit in the parking lots for better vision. Anyone with the slightest knowledge of baseball knows the first base coach has about as much value as a scarecrow in front of Famous-Barr. The biggest decision they have to make during a game is which pocket to put the batting helmet in. I can see him catching a drive off the bat of Willie McCovey with a glove the size of crepe suzette. Pro football has a few figureheads to appease the NAACP and CORE also. They have such titles as Assistant Speciality Team Coach, or Assistant Offensive End Coach, or any other similiar title that proves useful at the time. The NFL office has its ‘transit black’ . . . Uncle Buddy Young is set scurrying around the country' anytime the blacks have a greviance. The center of hypocrisy has to be Texas University at Austin. Daryl Royal has Al Randolph listed as an Assistant. Randolph is the only college coach in America who spends the entire season playing professional football (with Green Bay). He stops in for a cup of coffee during practice (two weeks). He has the great responsibility of assistant backfield coach! At least basketball has advanced men who have shown talent. Football and the ‘national pastime’ are still practicing in the great American tradition of denying advancement because of skin color.
