The Augusta News-Review - July 5, 1973 - 'HB s By Mark T. Southerland National Black News Service Some of the fans in Atlanta may call Hank Aaron a “nigger”, but the folks in Wisconsin are wild about him. Gw. Patrick Lucey will proclaim Aug. 6 as “Hank Aaron Day” so baseball fans in his state can honor the superstar. The Atlanta Braves outfielder, who is only 21 home runs short of tying Babe Ruth’s record 714, spent the first 11 years of his major league career in Milwaukee. ***** When Joe Frazier showed up in London’s Leicester Square last week to get his work permit to fight Britain’s Joe Bugner, he looked more like a chic Dapper Dan than a former world heavyweight boxing champ. Attired in matching silver grey and black knickers and Big Apple hat and a black shirt open to the navel, Frazier had some words for Bugner’s manager, Andy Smith, who wanted the former champ to have his beard because it might serve as a cushion for the blows to the chin Bugner hopes to land. The secretary of the Britist Boxing Board of Control consulted his rule book, which states that a boxer entering the it'i lickin qo&i new way to lick your finger country style dinner or by the COLONEL SANDERS' RECIPE fried flfttooyjjjfe TANKERSLEY MOTORS 1460 Broad Street Phone 722-1861 1 1967—98 Olds fully equipped '••••. 795.00 2 1 965 Ford Wagon fully equipped 595.00 3 1965 Ford Fairlane V 8 495.00 4 1965 Olds Vista Cruise Wagon .495.00 5 1966 Pontiac 4 Dr. Catalina 595.00 MAXWELL HOUSE PHARMACY —OPEN ALL DAY SEVEN PAYS PER WEEK— -1002 GREENE ST. 722-4695 722-7088 USRY’S SEAFOOD MARKET “Eat the fish today that was sleeping in the Gulf last night 2005 OLD SAVANNAH ROAD V??! Robinson. | Three years ago, when Clyde was manager of the San Francisco Giants, he had a message waiting for him in his office after a Sunday doubleheader. The message said that a youngster was on the verge of death in the Stanford University Hospital and was very much of a Giants fan. Chances were that the youngster had only hours to live. King called his wife and said he would be late for dinner and he headed for the hospital. He met the youngster and gave him a Giants cap, and left the hospital being told that the boy would not live through the night. “It was a great feeling to see the boy’s eyes light up when we gave him that cap.” King said recently, “And it ring must have “a clean and smart condition.” He then said Frazier’s beard looked “Neat...but if it grows any more he (Frazier) will have to trim it.” Bugner’s manager then agreed to a suggestion that Frazier’s whiskers be inspected at the weigh-in and trimmed if considered necessary. ***** Charges of hitting a policeman and resisting arrest against Isiah Robertson, the tough Los Angeles’ Rams linebacker, have been dropped due to a “lack of intent to commit harm.” Robertson was WALLACE'S REAL ESTATE h 132 GWINNETT I 722-8838 was an even greater feeling when the boy called me a month later to tell me he was coming to a Giants game.” The boy lived on with his deadly disease until recently, and when King was told by the youngster’s parents that their boy had died, the parents noted that the last request of the young boy was to make sure he was buried with the Giants cap that King had given him. King acts are not unusual for Clyde King. He is a dynamic Christian layman and speaker, who has touched the lives of many young people he has worked with. “I can’t say enough good things about Mr. King,” Braves pitcher Tom House said recently. “When he was the manager at Richmond (Braves’ Triple A farm team) and I was pitching there, I was struggling and it seemed like I’d never make it to the big leagues. One day Mr. King tossed me the ball and said, ‘Stick with it kid, you’re going to the big leagues.’ Six weeks later I was pitching for Atlanta.” King, who is noted for his ability to develop pitchers, has an uncanny eye for spotting talent. When he was pitching coach for Pittsburgh, a 27-year-old mill league pitcher was invited to try out for the team in Spring Training. The age of 27 is incredibly old for arrested May 19 when police responded to a complaint of a fight at a party in Huntington Beach, Calif. ***** University of Arizona basketball coach Fred Snowden and his wife May won a temporary victory last week when a federal judge restrained a homebuilder from selling a house until the Snowdens’ charge of racial discrimination is heard in court. Snowden, the first black head coach of a major university in a major conference, contended the builder refused to sell the $49,500 house to him because of race and filed a civil complaint against the builder last May 8. The judge ruled that the Snowdens would be harmed if the house were sold before the court action is concluded, but that the builder would not suffer any hardship. The name of the pitcher was Woody Fryman, who is now pitching for the Detroit Tigers, and in Fryman’s first Spring Training game, he was overpowering. For the first two innings, no one got on base. Finally, in the third inning, he walked a batter; the batter stole second base off Fryman; and he then stole third base, again off the pitcher. At that point, King went to the mound to talk to his pitcher. “Don’t you know how to hold a runner on base?” King asked. “I’ve never had a runner on base before,” Fryman answered.
