Duane Thomas reported to
the Washington Redskins’
training camp in Carlisle, Pa. last
week, much to the delight of
Coach George Allen and
Redskins fans who hope the
super running back will do for
last year’s NFC champs what he
did for its arch rivals, the Dallas
Cowboys in its Super Bowl
romp over Miami.
Allen got Thomas for a No. 1
draft choice in 197 5 and a No. 2
choice in 1976 from the San
Diego Chargers, who suspended
him for reporting to camp late.
Newsmen and ‘Skins trainers
who watched Thomas, who did
not play last year, as he worked
out with him teammates
declared the 26 year old running
back in excellent physical
condition.

Larry Brown, who could
r ; ”htfully be called “Mr.
Ri skin”, last week ended his
1< day holdout and reported to
raining camp, although
ntract negotiations have not
yet een completed.
le NFL’s most valuable
er in 1972 said he had
b ed at reporting to camp
because he did not feel he had
enough “security”. Brown
gained 1,216 yards and carried
the ball 285 times last year, 20
short of the all-time record,
which he might have surpassed

The only handicap to hiring us
is not knowing where to find us.
You won’t find guys like us sell

skilled; able-bodied workers. We’re

Unfortunately, though, too many
of us are unemployed.
And the irony of it is, it’s not that
men and women like yourself don’t
want to hire us. It's simply that you
don’t know how to go about it.

It All Started
With Tank Younger
It wasn’t too long ago (a
couple of decades) that such
names as Morgan State,
Grambling, Florida A & M, etc,
were strange sounding nouns to
the average American and to
football fans in particular.
Today, they rattle off Texas
Southern. Alcorn,
Philander-Smith, Morehouse,
etc. as though they are
household items.

M. Young, Jr. Memorial
Football Classic featuring
regular season games.

John Mackey, voted the best
tight end in the NFL’s first 50
years in a poll taken in 1971,
announced last week that he is
retiring.
The 31 year old three-time
all-pro and five-time Pro Bowl
performer during his nine
seasons with the Baltimore
Colts said, “1 decided it was
time to turn it over to the kids
and let them do their thing”.
Mackey, who was traded to
the San Diego Chargers as a free
agent last year and was a
backup, said he is “being
considered for head coach at
Syracuse next year,” when the
post will be vacated.
*****
The Los Angeles Rams
picked up veteran defensive
back Herb Adderley from the
New England Patriots last week.
The 34 year old Adderley, who
played nine years with Green
Bay and three with Dallas, will
be tried at safety and
cornerback.

The Oakland Athletics’
Reggie Jackson last week
assumed the lead in home runs
and RBIs in the American
League with 24 homers and 82
RBIs.

Morgan State versus Grambling
headed for Yankee Stadium on
September 22nd, we are
reminded that Black College
football has come a long way
and has gained the respect of the
football expert and the
aficionado, alike.
Black athletes have been a
part of professional football
from the very beeinnine with
such stars as Fritz Pollard, Ink
Williams, Paul Robeson and
many others. But in 1933 a
“gentlemen’s agreement”
among NFL club owners barred
Blacks until 1946, when Kenny
Washington and Woody Strode
played for the Los Angeles
Rams.
It was these same Rams who
signed the first player from a
Black College. He was Paul
“Tank” Younger who stood 6-3
and tipped the scale at 225.
Younger scored 60 touchdowns
as a running back at Grambling
College while also playing
tackle, end, and tailback. He
reported to the Rams camp in
1949.
As a pro - he played 9 years
with the Rams and one year
with the Pittsburgh Steelers -
Younger played fullback nad
linebacker and average
50-minutes a game during his
peak years. One year he was the
outstanding running back for
the Rams and the next year he
was the team’s outstanding
linebacker.
Younger played in the Pro
Bowl in 1952, 53, and 54.
Presently he’s with the Los
A..geles Rams organization as a
scout. Tank’s pioneering effort
on behalf of Black college
football opened the floodgates.
Little Grambling College, in
Grambling, Louisiana, has
turned out more athletes who
have made a living in the
National Football League than
any other college with the
exception of Notre Dame. How
a small Black Collge with an
enrollment of approximately
