MORGAN VS GRAMBLING
TOPS IN BLACK COLLEGE
GRID
When the New York Urban
League started the Whitney M.
Young, Jr. Memorial Football
Cassie, featuring Morgan State
and Grambling College, they
created the top football game
in Black college circles. Not
only is it the top draw among
Black colleges, but outdraws
many white college games
including several “bowl”
games.
This year’s classic will be
played at New York’s Yankee
Stadium on Saturday,
September 22nd, game time
3:00 P.M.
One of the all-time great
games is the Orange Blossom
Cassie in Florida, featuring the
A & M team against a leading
team in the South. The Orange
Blossom is entering its 41st
year making it the granddaddy
of Black college bowl games.
Jack Gaither, dean of Black
college coaches, retired from
active duty at A & M this week
after four decades at the
school.
The other top game in the
Southern Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference is the
battle between Bethune
-Cookman and the Florida A &
M. Their traditional
donnybrook usually settles the
State's number one position. In
recent years the Fisk
University-Fort Valley State
game has taken on sectional
importance.
In the three year old
Mid-Eastern Athletic
Conference North Carolina A
& T and North Carolina
Central, Morgan State against
Howard, and Morgan State
against Maryland State have

LIFTING BODY AND MOTHER SHIP - As its B-52 mother ship flies by, the Air Force X-24A lifting body
research craft is checked out following a test flight at Edwards AFB, Calif. This odd-shaped experimental aircraft
will be on display to the public at Southgate Plaza, September 19-24th. The rocket powered X-24A, called a
lifting body because it uses the shape of its body rather than wings to fly, has been flown to test concepts for
possible use on future “space shuttle” missions.
held the conference spotlight.
These old C.I.A.A. teams, now
in the new conference, still
carry on their time-worn
crusade for gridiron
supremacy.
The Central Intercollegiate
Athlectic Conference’s
highlight game is a state
matter settling the question
as to who is the best in
Virginia, Virginia State or
Virginia Union.
In the Southwest Athletic
Conference, generally
considered the rough-necks of
Black college football,
traditional warfare exists
between Grambling, Alcorn,
Texas Southern and Jackson
State (an independent) and the
Tigers of Grambling. State’s
only loss last year was to
Grambling.
All of these games,
Page 8
important in their respective
conferences and important
nationally, draw anywhere
from 30,000 to 40,000
spectators. The Whitney M.
Young, Jr. Classic, in its third
year, has always packed 64,000
into Yankee Stadium.
In its short history, the game
has attracted national attention
for its great play, great drawing
power and its significance in
college football.
Coach Eddie Robinson of
Grambling, in his 31st year at
the Tiger helm, ranks second
only to Alabama’s Bear Bryant
in most wins for active
coaches. Bryant has won 220,
lost 69 and tied 16. Robinson
has 215 victories, 77 defeats,
and 11 ties. With a good year
in ‘73, Robinson could become
the number-one winning coach
in the nation.
With proceeds from the
Morgan/Grambling game
earmarked for educational
programs for urban youth,
another dimension of
importance is added to this
event.

COOLING IT. Youngsters cool it on a summer day by splashing in a city
swimming pool under the watchful eye of Henry Jones, a member of Teens on
Patrol (TOP). Employed by the Rochester Police, TOPs work at 43 recreation sites
around the city. Their presence encourages safety and good behavior, although they
have no enforcement power. TOPs have been on duty in Rochester for the past
seven summers.
Composite Squadron, Civil Air
Patrol, in cooperation with
the United States Air Force
and will open to the public
daily at no charge.
The X-24A is in a special
class of aerospace vehicles
known as “lifting bodies.”
Unlike conventional aircraft,
the lifting body derives
aerodynamic lift from the
shape alone, rather than from
wings. The lifting body shape
would be far more versatile
than the re-entry capsules: *
used in present manned space
flights. Lifting body crewmen
would be capable of
maneuvering during re-entry
and making an airplane type
landing at a conventional
airfield.
Between April 1969 and
June 1971 the rocket powered
X-24A made 28 successful
flights with NASA and Air
Force pilots at the controls.
