STOKES The Rising Star Baptist Church (of Atlanta) will be guests at a Community Vesper Hour at Paine College Sunday at 6:00 p.m. Rev. C.L. Stokes, formerly of Antioch Baptist in Augusta is the pastor. The purpose of the program is to get the masses involved with Paine College, according to Rev. Stokes. Appearing on he program will The Pastor’s Choir, The C.L. Stokes Ensemble, The Number One Choir, The H.T. Thomas Gospel Choir, The Male Choir and The Sanctuary Choir. The Pastor’s Choir and The Sanctuary Choir have over 50 voices each. The Pastor’s Choir is made up of children 12 years of age or younger. The featured soloist will be Mrs. Priscilla Carter. Mrs. Carter attended Paine College. Other soloists include Dr. Henry Gore and John Griggs. Dr. Gore is a professor at Morehouse College, holding the PhD degree in mathematics. He played and performed with the Reverend C.L. Franklin for two years at Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit. Special guests will be the Urshers Union of Georgia. WOMEN’S DAY The Great er Young Zion Baptist Church will hold its Women’s Day program on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. Speak. >»r the occasion will be Mrs. Charles Stokes (formerly Gwinne Harper of Royston, Georgia*. She is a graduate of Paine College and has done further study at Fort Valley State College and the University of Georgia. SMITH Charles Frederick Smith, Director of Development, Paine College; and Chairman Board Directors, CSRA Economic Opportunity Authority, Inc., will deliver the annual Men’s Day address at Miles Memorial Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, Sunday afternoon October 21, 1973, at 3:00 o’clock. Mr. Smith is a native of North Augusta, South Carolina, and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel E. Smith. He graduated from Paine College, magna cum laude with a B.S. in science; and from New York University with a Master of Science Degree in Mathematics. He has wide experiences in teaching in many outstanding positions; and is a member of Mathematics Association of America; National Council of Teachers of Mathematics; American Association for the Advancement of Science; Alpha Kappa Mu National Honor Society; Georgia Community Action Association; and Augusta Chapter of the Paine College Alumni Association. He is an active number of Trinity CME Church, serving as treasurer of the Senior Choir and Trustee Board. He will be introduced by Mallory K. Millender, editor-publisher of The Augusta News-Review; also a member of Paine College faculty. Dr. I.E. Washington, Principal of Lucy Laney High School, will preside over the program and present the Rev. J.H. Edwards, Curtis Cisrow, the Rev. Charlie Moore, Ellis M. Johnson, M.M. Scott, Willie L. Brown, Aaron Tappan, John Franklin, A.L. Terrell, P.A. Mance, Paul Kendrick, Jesse Hanson, and Edward Settles. The Rev. R. Anthony Laric is pastor, and says the committee will serve refreshments at the close of the program. He will preach at the morning hour, 11:00 a.m. The public is cordially invited at all hours. News-Review To Aid Jefferson County NAACP Voter Education And Registration Drive In co-operation with the NAACP of Jefferson County, the Augusta News-Rt ivw should soon become the principal organ of communications for Blacks in Wrens, Louisville, and Wadley and throughout Jefferson County. Jefferson County NAACP President Harold Leverett stated that the NAACP is hunching “immediately” a voter registration and voter education drive. Jefferson County is approximately 54% Black. The News-Review, he said, is the organ they would like to use to get then message across. The NAACP is in process of selling News-Review subscriptions to the 9,000 Blacks in Jefferson County. “We have looked at several newspapers an<i we think The News-Review is the kind of paper we want to identify with,” Leverett commented. Robert Barnes, 27, is the KILLED BY AUTO Gregory Wiley, killed instantly when struck by an automobile Monday, afternoon October 15, 1973, returning home from school on Highway 56. He was the son of Mr. Goerge C. Wiley, Jr. and Mrs. Elizabeth Wiley, and the grandson of Mr. & Mrs. George C. Wiley, Sr. CHOIR ANNIVERSARY The Ist Anniversary of the Junior Choir of the Live River Baptist Church,Gracewood Georgia will be held Sunday night October 21, at 7:30 p.m. The Rev. J.W. Fouche is Pastor.
