Mrs. Mary L. Clanton Honored On Her 90th Birthday Mrs. Mary Lou Clanton became a VIP on Tuesday ' night October 9th when her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Solomon A. Williams z entertained her with a birthday party honoring her 90th birthday at their home 1265 Mill St. The guests were greeted by Miss Demetrius Williams and Miss Sharon Stewart, great-granddaughters of the honoree. They were ushered into the living room where a brief ceremony was held paying tribute to the honoree. Expressions were given by the following: James Trobridge, Executive of Social Security, of which the honoree had been employed by his parents, Rep. Richard Dent, a cousin of the honoree, Rev. Emmet Martin, pastor of the honoree, Mrs. Gussie Scott, president of the 10th District Missionary Society, Rev. R.E. Donaldson, pastor of the family, and Rev. R.C. Guests were then ushered into the dining room by Miss Bonita Williams, another great-granddaughter, to a beautiful table centered with a three tier cake carring out the color scheme of pink and green with the figure candles “90th” on top, they were served buffet style to cake, punch, mints, nuts, ice cream, assorted Hors d‘oeuvres, sandwiches, chip and dip, pickles, and sweet tray. The guest book was kept by Maj. Rosa M. Harris. More than 100 persons were present for this occasion. Out of town guests included Mrs. Lucy Thomas of New York City, niece of the honoree, her grand daughter Sheryl Curry, Mr. and Mrs. Willie Walker of Jamacia, New York. Out of town greetings, were given by William Hanson of Philadelphia, Pa., Mrs. Ella Bryant, of New York City, Mrs. Helen Curry, Mrs. Mary Nixon, and Robert Thomas of New York, Mrs. Hariett Jones, of Boston; Mrs. Annie B. Carrington of Ashville, N.C. and Mr. and Mrs. Willie Burke of San Francisco, California. Hostess for the night were Mrs. Mary Stewart granddaughter of honoree, Miss Margaret Johnson, cousin of Honoree, Miss Mattie Wilson, Mrs. Hattie Crawford, Mrs. Lillie Johnson, Mrs. Claudia Thomas, and Mrs. Viola B. Williams. Gifts were received by Miss Cathy Johnson and Mrs. Bennie M. Williams. Mrs. Clanton was asked, “What do you recommend to others that might help them to live to be 90 years old?”. She replied, “Serve God, get your rest and pray to have someone like my children and grands to take care of you when you need it.
