And we see much of both in our daily lives. We say it is part of the system and part of the indi vidual. But clearly it doesn’t have to be. Untold legions of women and men lead lives of non-violence. Perhaps some day nations will. You and I, good neighbors within the community of man, can help show the way. PITTS The New Holt Baptist Church of Harlem, Georgia is | God "Promised To Exult Me If I Put Him First” | ■•*•*• - the key-note to Billy Preston’s life is his constant ability to progress. At only 26, he has made some remarkable musical transitions. From Little Richard to the Beatles and now to the Rolling Stones. At present, Billy Preston is about to embark upon a mammoth tour with the Rolling Stones that will cover most of Europe. Such a progression confirms the fact that Billy Preston will never cease to leave his musical mark on the pages of rock history. He has contributed so much, not only as a solo artist, but also as a fine musician whose keyboard abilities are constantly in demand by other artists. Preston has been on tour with artists such as: Bonnie and Delaney, Grand Funk, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep and, of course, his contribution at the Madison Square Garden benefit concert for Bangladesh can never be forgotten. Billy Preston’s first entry in the pages of rock history must have been made at three years old, when he first climbed on the piano seat to reach for the keys. At six, he was running to the local church, by which time he had moved to Los Angeles from his home town, Houston, Texas, to play the organ. At ten he played in the church working with James Cleveland and appearing with Mahalia Jackson on her show. In the same year, he took the part of W.C. Handy as a child actor in the film “St. Louis Blues” which starred Nat King Cole as the adult W.C. Handy. in ‘62 Billy Preston joined what was supposed to be a gospel tour, but with Sam Cooke and Little Richard taking part, it inevitably turned out to be an explosive rock ‘n roll tour. It was the first time Preston had ever played rock ‘r roll, and he like it. After th< tour, Sam Cooke asked Preston to make an album on his (Cooke’s label) “Sar Records” ■ it was appropriately called “Sixteen Year Old Soul”. By ‘65, Billy Preston had found himself a regular spot on a top rock ‘n roll show, Shindig. He became the resident keyboard player with featured spots every now and then. During the Shindig days, Preston was spotted by Ray celebrating its Annual Men’s Day Program Sunday November 11, 1973 at 11:00 a.m. Dr. L.H. Pitts, President of Paine College, will be the guest speaker. He will be introduced by Mr. Charles Lazenby, principal of Columbia Junior High School, Columbia County. Rev. Gilbert R. Dean, is the pastor. Hulon Rolland is general chairman. All members are assessed twenty-five dollars ($25.00). The church was recently renovated, and the main objective is to contribute to the renovation treasury. HARMONY The Ushers and Usherettes of the Harmony Baptist Church will celebrate their 29th Anniversary Sunday, at 2 p.m. The public is invited. Rev. Floyd Heard is pastor and Mrs. Arnie Hill is chief Usherette. IHTRODUCIHG HEWS IN THE MOTHER TONGUE For Black people, the mother tongue is the same all over the country. It’s the unique way we have of expressing ourselves. That’s one of the reasons the National Black Network saw the need for a national Black news service. What do we call Black news? It’s simply news reported by Black people, edited by Black people, and affecting the lives of Black people. That’s the National Black Network—a vital communications link between Black communities everywhere. It’s a bet that when you listen to an NBN station, you’ll know where it’s coming from. After all, it’s carrying your news. National Black Network Division of Unity Broadcasting Network, Inc Charles who was appearing on the show. He took an immediate interest in Preston and asked him to make a record with him on Vee Jay records. Together they came up with “The Most Exciting Organ Ever” as well as another gospel album. A single was released called “Billy’s Bag” which was a hit in Britain. Billy’s bag was clearly to play and be heard. So from ‘67 to ‘6B, he went on tour with Ray Charles around the U.S. and Europe. It was at London’s Festival Hall that George Harrison expressed more than just admiration for Preston. Phone calls were exchanged and before long Harrison asked Preston to come over to Apple to “meet the Beatles”. Not just because Billy Preston was the first Black American artist to work and receive label credit with the Beatles or because he was the first artist to be personally produced by an individual Beatle, but because it is too obvious to fall into a mass of superlatives about an artist and musician who is already appreciated and respected. It’s all true, Bill Preston has made rock history . . . and there are still chapters more to be made. It’s not easy to be successful but this is what I dream, to reach heights unknown as strange as it may seem. I will never give up the thought determination can win. I must pay my dues, bide my time, it’s just around the bend. If it’s for me, I will get it. If it’s not I am not to blame because I am using what God gave me and of this I am not ashamed. He promised to exult me if I put him first. - 4 wlLMk' mMMm w MW v\ * MW W UNUSUAL ALLIANCE - Harry Belafonte (left) portrays a fast-talking, whiskey-drinking preacher who aligns himself with Buck (Sidney Poitier), a former Union cavalryman-turned guide for slaves planning to homestead in the West, in “Buck and the Preacher”, a Western to be colorcast on “NBC Saturday Night at the Movies” Nov. 10 (9-11 p.m. NYT) on the NBC Television Network. Music is my life and every day I live it and it's a good life too. Everything 1 want to say through the music it gets to you. I have been blessed to play and sing since the age of three.
