The Augusta News-Review - November 15, 1973 - w fy / s <S THE FIFTH QUARTER By Michael Thurmond Even though the Georgia Bulldogs suffered a heartbreaking 11-10 defeat by the Florida Gators Saturday, fans in the CSRA can still stand-up and be proud because of one Sylvester Boldher. The ex-Lucy Laney star started his first game Saturday and according to Bulldog coaches played exceedingly well. James Green, former Paine College basketball star who was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks of the NBA in ‘73 is now teaching school in Savannah, Ga. Pittsburgh beat the Oakland Raiders Sunday with Terry Hanratty quarterbacking but I think that Joe Gilliam should have gotten another chance after his performance against the Redskins on November 5. Gilliam is one of the ten Black quarterbacks in the NFL. Believe it or not, the Augusta Eagles recently played a team from Greeneville, S.C. for the Dixie League semi-pro championship. Things didn't quite work out for the home team, however, as the Eagles lost 31-7. Can’t help but notice the increasing number of Black quarterbacks now playing big time college football for ' predominantly white schools. Mutal Black Sports of the Mutal Broadcasting Network is one of the best things to happen to Black college sports in a long time. What about Tennessee State in the Liberty Bowl against Auburn or Florida!!??? It made me feel good to see two former teammates on TV last Saturday Horace King and Richard Appleby of the Georgia Dogs. Appleby and I almost grew up together. He really had to fight the odds to make it.... but thats another story for another time. The sports documentary “The Long Winter of Henry Aaron” was excellent. Makes me kinda wonder what this “land of the free and home of the brave” is all about. Lucy Laney experienced one of its worst seasons in many years as they went 5-5 on the season. Next year the Wildcats will find themselves in a new region with new opponents as they move into 7AAA. It’s been a long time since Laney played a school from Athens, but that’ll be the case in ‘74 because two Athens teams are also listed in 7AAA. I see Atlanta over Minnesota Monday night on the “Cosell Comedy Hour” but ain’t nobody gon’ keep the Vikes from the Super Bowl. "Forward Augusta” Announced A group of Augusta financial institutions announced Wednesday the formation of Forward Augusta, Incorporated, which will develop a new 403-acre industrial complex in South Augusta known as Forward Augusta Industrial Plantation. “During the past twelve months, five of Augusta’s financial institutions have been moving toward the creation of a non-profit corporation for the purpose of developing a prime industrial community,” announced D.D. Barnard, Jr., Executive Vice President of Georgia Railroad Bank and Trust Company and President of Forward Augusta, Incorporated. The result of these efforts is the formation of Forward Augusta, Incorporated, a non-profit corporation, the Page 10 Cummings And Paige To Lead PC Lions When the Paine College Lions take to the floor this season much will be determined concerning their success or failure by Horace Cummings and Lester Paige. Cummings, a 6’7” ex-center, was moved by Coach Tolbert to forward this season principally because of his deadly shooting eye from the outside. The senior who last year ranked high in NAIA rebounding statistics has shown a natural touch from his new position. Cummings told the News-Review concerning the new position, * “Personally, I feel much more comfortable at forward because during my high school career that was the only position 1 played. 1 really didn’t start playing center until I got to Paine.” The soft spoken Cummings was asked to appraise this years Lion squad, “We’re a much better team this year, we have a lot more spirit and enthusiam. There are also some very talented ballplayers who help us in terms of winning ballgames.” Part Two of Paine’s “Dynamic Duo” is high scoring guard Lester Paige a Savannah, Ga. native who was ranked eighth in the Nation in NAIA scoring with a 35 point average. Paige who is in his final season, has sometimes been Board of Directors of which are Duane Grice, Vice President - C&S National Bank; Bob Balk, Executive Vice President - First Federal Savings & Loan Association; H.C. McGowan, Vice President and Trust Officer - First National Bank and Trust Company; John Adamson, President - First Augusta State Bank; and D.D. Barnard, Jr. The group also announced the assembling of property for industrial development located on the south side of Tobacco Road, between Highways 25 and 56. Forward Augusta Industrial Plantation, the official name for the tract, will offer tailor-made industrial sites serviced by water, sewage, rail siding, and convenience to major highways and air facilities. This industrial community can best be identified as “clean industrial development”. Protective covenants will be applied to provide a uniformity of construction, set-back of buildings, landscaping, and other features that will make this an ideal industrial development. Through the use of swale and burins, every effort will be made to control noise and in general, make this development as aesthetically appealing as possible. n !' - % >v 1 gg* f I I 11 r —* ill i • I \ \ \ 1 __ -Ml>*~C*i£tl j \' j < \ fl x ss \ ’ t ■ fc-WaaFw. When asked about this he responded, “I know people have said that about me, but this year I am going to do whatever it takes for us to win. If that means me shooting less or more it’s alright with me.” Barring injury Paige and Cummings should lead the Lions to a winning season. Other returning players include Lindsey Napier, Johnny Nirns and Lewis Brinson should add more depth and experience to this year’s squad. Bible Published for Blacks Only 5x7 ' J I % rSf, i j m 1 'Wi Just two years ago a new concept in Bible translation was introduced. It was the Living Bible, a contemporary, modern version of the scrip ture that reads “a lot like your daily newspaper,” ac cording to one reviewer. The New Testament of the Living Bible has now been published in an edition espe cially for the Black reader in a volume called Soul Food. It is a vinylized paperback edition, generously illustrated with actual “today style” photographs, and is available nearly anywhere books are sold at $ 1.95 per copy. The popularity of the Liv ing Bible and its understand able style of paraphrasing the scriptures has been proven by sales of over 12-million copies since publication. The pub lisher, Tyndale House of Wheaton, Illinois, is currently shipping over 12-thousand copies of the Living Bible per day, to book retailers through out the nation. “Publishers Weekly” magazine, the baro meter of the publishing in dustry, rated the Living Bible as the best-selling book of 1972 in the non-fiction cate gory. The book outsold the fiction best seller, Jonathan Livingston Seagull, during 1972. It is the New Testament of this same best selling Living ar » I \ wk \ x \ Henry Aaron (L), and Billye f Aaron Married In Jamaica Baseball star Hank Aaron and his fiancee, Billye Williams, were married Monday in Jamaica in a private ceremony. Aaron, 39, who needs only one home run to tie the legendary Babe Ruth’s career record of 714 homers, flew with Mrs. Williams, 33, an Atlanta television personality, to Jamaica over the weekend. It is the second marriage for both. Aaron, who is divorced, has two sons and two daughters. Mrs. Williams is the widow of the Rev. Samuel Williams, a well-known Atlanta minister and civil rights leader. They have one daughter, 6-year-old Deidre. Mrs. Williams, vivacious and attractive, met the Braves star two years ago when he appeared on a show she co-hosts. They became engaged last Easter but it was not Bible that comprises the text of the recently published Soul Food. Each different book in the New Testament is pro ceeded with a brief example of how the theme of that book relates to life in today’s world by Twentieth Century people. In addition to the in troduction, there are pictures at the first of each chapter of Black people in actual life situations that illustrate the ideas and thoughts in the fol lowing book of the Bible. According to the publisher, Soul Food is the first New Testament that makes the scriptures more comprehensi ble to, and fits the specific needs of, the Black society in this nation. ■'''j^STSS?!,^^.'' - - * *; «X;. * ?i' y,' ======== . i | "x- - ■~~ —_ _Y i 1 II I S - j i [? if I i i If r k € / Xu j 1 IM r L_ yh 3k v '- \ Jr . :f 1 ... ... / T 1' - trt, <J s4ki ?? ■ jjßft ; Mr K' >»%. jL .. .
