By Lenora Carter PUBLISHER HOUSTON FORWARD TIME Our tour of the Soviet Union (Russia) was a very educational ex perience. In our country we have been raging about Women’s Lit, we speak of freedom, Civil Rights and Equal Rights. On this trip we witnessed all four, black women have always been liberated, therefore we have something in common with the women of the soviet union. Before the revolution in 1917 Russia was ruled by Czars, but after the revolution it was like a new day for the people. It put an end to poverty, unemployment and inequality. During the revolution approximately 20 million men were lost in war. This forced the women to take on quite a responsibility as far as being the head of many households. Women in the Soviet Union have very little time to spend at home with their families, but they are encouraged to many children hoping for male babies. When a mother have more than ten children she is called mother hero and given many prizes in cluding bonuses. For maternity leave they are given four months with pay, if she has twins or if she has any complication she get additional time off. They work side by side with men in fields, factories, cleaning streets, parks, hotels, driving buses and trains. Unfortunately we came in contact with very few women on person to person basis in conversation to ask their feelings about the working conditions and how they felt about the responsibility of carry WANTED NEWS BOYS Good Pty CALL News-Review Office 722-4555 Violence divides. Bell Until this movie, I felt that the film industry was really doing us in. With our Black brothers and sisters writing and directing the scripts, unlike “Super Fly”, and all the rest of the long, rapid line of Black exploitation films, “The Spook Who Sat by the Door” is really driving a clean, positive message home. Black director Ivan Dixon of Hogan Heroes fame must be commended for a superb product. The film is based on a novel by Sam Greenlee of the same title. Mr. Greenlee assisted with the screenplay and I believe this fact contributes greatly to the fine quality of this film. Lawrence Cook plays the leading role. And what a lead he plays. Unlike “Super Fly” “Hit Man” and other hustler-type films. He doesn’t wear his hair in any European manner or dress in an “over hip” fashion. Even his role with the Black prostitute is one I must commend him for. Cook plays one Black from 50 who through hard determination and constant persistence modes the CIA against their effort to keep them out. He later quits and returns to the ghettos of Chicago where he teaches CIA type tactics to the Brothers. This is where the excitement begins. I recommend this movie to all mature Black audiences.
